I just wanted to say that having read your story of amazing weightloss has made me realise that I have wasted the last two months testing my band and eating small amounts of high calorie food (because it was easier) - maybe I am scared of sucess....who knows!
I lost 30 pounds in total and thats including the 15 pound pre op weight loss.
I ate a Lean Cuisine the other day and managed all of that...do you find that portion size works for you. I was thinking that I should be consuming just half of that and then feeling full???
Would love your thoughts on this
Kind Regards

Doreen...
I am going to commute backwards and forwards from Singapore. My youngest son is only starting Year 11 this year, a year late, but better late than never I suppose. So, I can't be away from him for too many weeks at a time. I will sure to be racking up the frequent flyer points I think. I also have another older son living at home who is at uni as well as my daughter who comes and goes from uni at Bathurst, so I can't be too far away for too long. And of course, my wee poodle is my shadow, so she would miss me as well.
So... I will be here a fair bit and there a fair bit I suppose. So I will fit my RDA in around that.

Hi Doreen..
You are such a kind soul. I hope that everyone has settled in with you, what a good person you are to do this for other less fortunates.
I am starting to do Riding for the Disabled this year... something I did a gazillion years ago when I was doing my Duke of Edinburgh medals. I loved it then, so I figure, back to it again... put a bit back into the community. And like you, I need to be slimmer to do this as I have to be able to ride the horses... so now I can do it, yay!
Take care...

Congrats Liz! Losing 25 kgs in 3 months is brilliant. You know that's 2 kgs a week! Whether your goal is 30 kg or 100kgs it is daunting for everybody. We all wish we could wake up and it's magically gone.
But even on those days when I have made wrong food choices (and especially the last few days with Xmas and a birthday party)I always stop myself and think about how much I have eaten and think about how much i would have eaten previously. It's not even close.
If you think about being on a diet it is depressing. But I try to think of it as eating everything but I just can't fit in so much.
Try and set yourself short term goals: when i lose 5kg: i'll have a manicure, 10kgs a pedicure, 15kgs a facial, 20 kgs day spa. Don't forget your measurements either. At the end of every week I measure myself and add up all the cm I have lost: 8cm in total makes my day even if the weight loss is only 900gm.
Do you realise if you keep going at this rate by the time you reach your banding anniversary you'd be half you original weight?
Keep it up Liz, you're doing great.

Thanks Leanne!
It's almost like your message was meant for me as it's an echo of the thoughts I have.
As I'm on the higher end of the scales (started the journey at 186kg and was banded 23/09/08) I've now lost close to 25kgs and was feeling really unmotivated as I and others can't really notice the difference yet (dr says another 10 and it should start to show some results)!!
You're absolutely right though - it's a marathon and slow and steady will get me there - just got to keep remembering it but thanks :)

Marilyn
Welcome, it's nice to have you come out of lurkdom.
Congratulations on your loss of 32 kilos. I can certainly relate to your struggles regarding standstills, I've been on many standstills lol. I've even put on 30 kilos of the 40 kilos I lost post-banding as a result of weight increasing medication (cortisone) to heal chronic illnesses but I have lost the 30 kilos again and now 40 kilos lighter than when banded and around five kilos off goal. I wanted you to know that to give you encouragement not to give up, the weight will come off if you are determined, persevere and get yourself back on track and get the regular support you need from banding support groups, they have been a gret help to me otherwise I would have given up long ago.
The common thought is you need to lose the weight in the first two years otherwise from then on the weight is very difficult to get off again. Well I have proved that wrong, I put on the thirty kilos around the time of being two years banded and it has come off again thanks to my band and determination and support of banding support groups.
Also it help to understand that the banding journey is a marathon not a sprint. This is something I was often told in the early stages of banding but I wouldn't accept it, I wanted to get my weight off in the first year. Now I understand what it's a marathon not a sprint really means, slow and steady wins the race in the end.

Yes Linda I know why.
You have typed your message elsewhere and then copied it onto here, is that right?
When you do that for some weird reason Yahoo changes all punctuation marks into black blobs. Yahoo only like punctuation marks typed directly onto a Yahoo board.
To avoid the black blobs - when you paste your post onto the message box of this board DO NOT immediately click on POST REPLY. Instead do it this way -
Paste message.
Click on PREVIEW.
Read your post to see if you are happy with wording and appearance. If you happy with the appearance and wording of your post click on POST REPLY. If you are not happy because you see black blobs or want to make any other corrections -
Click on EDIT.
Delete the black blob and type in the punctuation mark again. In your case you would have to do that many times and make any other corections you might need to.
Click on PREVIEW again and make sure you are happy with it, if you are then -
Click on POST REPLY.
(If you are still not happy just follow the same procedure to edit, you can do that many times.)
_________________________ _________________________ _________
Alternatively you can just type your post entirely on this board and you won't have any problems with black blobs.
Don't worry about if you need to type several posts in your messages, most of us have to do that now and again.

Marilyn,
I'm not a tech head, but there are a couple around here somewhere. I don't think it was a coincidence. Perhaps you have a web browser other than Internet Explorer? Mozilla? Safari?
And yes, there is a limit on the length of your post. "No more than 2000 letters" is written above the reply box.

So to anyone who is undecided, I would say to you, be encouraged, and as has been previously said on this website, once you have had all of your questions answered, once you have done your research, once you are aware of the risks, and once you have found a way of financing it, go for it. Yes, there are challenges along the way, but it is all OK and most of it can be worked out. It is worth it. And best of all⦠with good on-going professional support (keep that professional support going), and now for me⦠with the peer support I am seeking⦠it is all possible.
Until next time, Marilyn. |

Hi Dear All
This is the first time I have posted, although have been watching this site for a couple of months.
December has brought me so many joys. The realization that I can now walk the Brisbane shopping centres for hours with a friend without joint pain severely curtailing my activities. The joy of flying Virgin and JetStar airlines and not have the table bounce up and down off my belly⦠there was a few inches clearance. I didnât have to ask for a seatbelt extension (just managed to squeeze the Virgin seatbelt on⦠but was OK, however JetStar had oodles of seatbelt length for me). I didnât need to buy 2 airline seats for myself⦠organizing an aisle seat for me was just fine⦠Itâs all good.
Iâm so glad that after having thought about it for about 2 yrs and gone to 3 information sessions, I finally had my lap-band applied in August of â07⦠once I found a way of financing it. For me I saw it as my last chance. I thought Iâd used up my last chance some years earlier when Iâd lost 57kg over a period of about 2yrs but put it all back on again, plus much more, and wondered just where it was all going to end⦠I felt hopeless about it all. I think what clinched it for me in terms of being fearful of a future with a lap-band, was that if I really was unhappy, if it really didnât work out, the whole thing was reversible and I could have it removed.
I have now lost 32kg. My starting weight was 135kg. Weight loss slowed down to something of a standstill for me several months back, but that is because I have been contented to do it my own way, though always supervised. I now need to find new strategies because I really want my weight loss journey to continue. It is encouraging to be reminded on this site that it is a âmarathonâ that we are running, and ânot a sprintâ.
So to anyone who is undecided, I would say to you⦠be encouraged, and as has been previously said on this website, once you have had all of your questions answ ... |

For those who find six meals a day isn't convenient talk to your surgeon or dietitian. Once you are over the six weeks healing period there is no reason why you can't have 3 meals per day, having 3 larger meals or 6 smaller meals (snacks) doesn't make any difference my surgeon and dietitian both told me. You need to figure out what suits you personally, i.e. your band, your stomach (hunger pangs or not), the type of work you do and your lifestyle.
I did six small meals (snacks)per day for a month but found I was becoming more obsessed with food because I was watching the clo ck to make sure I spaced those meals out throughout the day fairly evenly. Watching the clo ck stressed me out because I felt like I was constantly counting time to my next meal. Once I switched to three meals a day I never clo ck watched again and I just have my 3 meals when I feel like it not when the clo ck tells me too. 4 years after banding I'm still eating three meals a day and breakfast is always a shake.
Having said that though I'm one of the lucky one who don't feel hungry since banding so it could be easier for me to cope with 3 meals. When I was wheeled into surgery my tummy was rumbling with hunger when I was wheeled out I was no longer hungry. Although I said I don't get hungry the truth is I have felt hunger pangs four times in four years but they only lasted ten minutes maximum and went away without even eating.
I hope that helps anyone that is struggling with six meals as I was but remember don't follow what my surgeon and dietitian told me without discussing it with your surgeon and/or dietitian.

Thank you Doreen
All you say is so positive and great to hear.
You will not believe this but a girl contacted me that I used to know about 7 years ago. She saw my name on this site and after a few posts thought it had to be me. I have just been on the phone to her and she was banded last October.
I could not believe it after all this time.
This is the right thing to do for me.

Delia ,
remember many bigger people act happy ,
I did ,but I was tired and felt a failure ,
and was so unhealthy
I could not walk 1 block and was also on antidepressants after a accident (fall)
I felt a failure cause I could not lose weight and get rid of back pain,
your nephew is correct,
(I have met you,)
you are a beautiful lady ,he is right ,
I hardly exercise these days
just eat well and do more cleaning etc and shopping,
so do not think you need to be a gym junkie
a walk at the shopping centre or some good vacuming scrubbing etc and gardening can help heaps
that said when first banded
I did a hour every other day on tread mill etc but it now gathers dust lol ,
I have a life and ,I am out and about so get exercise without it,lol,
stay safe and so glad you have a date,Doreen |

HI Debra and Doreen
Your posts are so reassuring. Like Cat I wake up at night with the thought ARE YOU DOING THE RIGHT THING. Then I remember the Christmas gatherings yesterday and the bigger people dinner all so happy and wonder again think again am I doing the right think. They are all so happy. Then I remember my family gathering (lunch ) where I am the biggest and I know I am doing the right thing. No one puts me down even my nephew said Iâve seen pictures of you when you were younger and you still are beautiful. Made my day . (but I did wonder if he was referring to the weight). I am happy enough with them but it would be nice to be like them. Saying that I don't what to become a gym junky like my one sister.
Yours posts are so reassuring and I KNOW I AM DOING THE RIGHT THING on the 2nd Feb.
Have a great week.

Everytime I see someone who is significantly overweight, I want to go up to them and tell them about lapband. I'm almost 5 weeks post banded and have only lost 10 kgs so far but I feel so good and positive about my weight loss and the future ahead. This time it's for good!! I want to tell them it is so good. Those first few weeks of discomfort are forgotten when you see the weight just disappear.
I bought some new shorts (size 16) and and a singlet top (size 14...it's a bit small & tight around boobs but can't wait for it to be loose)Wow what a great feeling: time to throw away those size 18 and 20s.
I was worried i didn't have a before photo: My brother today gave me a photo taken at his wedding on 1st November: before I started my pre op diet. Even I can see the difference.
Cat, you are saving your life: think of all health issues that will go away, the medication you will no longer need. Yes there are risks, complications are possible. But it's worth it. The chance to improve the quality of the REST of your life is here.
I see people every day with diabetes, high BP, cholesterol, arthritis etc and the effects on their quality of life. You want to be around to see your kids grow up and to enjoy your grandchildren.

Doreen,
It's nice to hear reassuring words. I keep waking up in the middle of the night wondering if I am sure. Its funny how I forget just how overweight I am. I am fit so I feel pretty okay. I just have to see the label on my jeans or look in the mirror to remember that I need to take this seriously. And I do have commorbidities that aren't overt, so I need to remember them.
Anyway. Thanks again.
All the best,
