Pat I was fine with pills after surgery. It depends on whether your doctor puts fill in the band at the time. I only had trouble with tablets after a few fills. I need to cut them in half now. Capsules are fine.

I have no trouble taking my medication, at the begining, I crushed one of them then I just left the vitamins etc.
you have to check with the dr or pharmacy that you can do this to your tablets.

Hi

I am just going to chemist today to see about my medications to see if I can get soluable versions or crushable. Just had me thinking is this necessary forever with a band or just in the early days after surgery? Can anyone advise me?
Thanks Pat

Wow Jodine, thats a scary story and i feel for you.
Babs, I have a latex allergy. I found out during my last surgery that i am allergic to the tapes used for dressing. My skin came off with the tapes and there was a LOT of them. It was very painful, more painful than the huge surgery i had. I am being banded in a couple of weeks, is there anything i need to know about how to deal with this allergy situation?

Sorry for typo's but at Andy Spaldings Gold Coast boot camp & on mobile. Meant botched suturing as dirty wounds usually are left open to drain. I was packing a wound August- February so I learnt a lot in the gaps in health care, types of dressings available & developing a latex allergy to these dressings. I only took 5 weeks off work when I was septic initial admission. I have a new life. Barb

Re:General Chat #4 Reply to this message
Iodine, terrible time however it sounds you are positive which is essential for the future & your recivery. I had a staph infection followingband. It was at the port site. Cut a long story short port removed 3 months later surgeon said 3 months you can have port replaced. One month later due to what I believe botched practice of nurturing a dirty wound closed the ex port site abscessed up, different surgeon then had to remove entire band with I can have the hand replaced in 6 months. I was very scared I would regain the26 kg lost in 4 months- staph effect. I persevered, I was in control what I was putting in my mouth but I wa obsessed. 6 months later new band & I had kept weight +/- 2kgs. Unheard of according to Dr. With new band I stayed in 3 extra days for vancomycin antibiotic. Now 5 months later 40 kgs gone. I am celebrating life!

Hi.
like you, I knew my body and had also done over 250 dives with diving in freezing water In the UK, cave diving, wreck diving, deep diving, drift diving. etc.
I was very experienced.I was due to start my dive masters course here in Byron Bay.

I was looked after by one of the Australian navy diving doctors and Carl Edmonds in Sydney.
please please do not dive 3 times a day. its the third dive that pushes you past the limit.
even if your tables say its okay as mine did and the dive computer.
I was NOT overweight when I dived I was 34 when I had my last dive. I didn't become overweight until I had all my joints replaced due to necrosis.
I wouldn't want any one to go through what I have been through in the last 10 years, I am still having operations as a result of this.
Please just stick to 2 a day with your deepest dive first. don't do a night dive and dive the next morning early. its still the same day dive.

as for the band I think most people will tell you about 12 weeks from removal to next band, depends on how quick you get over the infection, but thats a usual time frame.

if you want to chat about the diving I am happy to give you my e-mail and or phone number.
my experience has now been written in the dive medicine books.

Re:General Chat #4 Reply to this message
mary..
Ive been diving for a long time now and know my limits and ive been banded over 5 yrs with over 200 dives while being banded, beleive me im in tune with my body but i will be taking it easy as i only planned to do 2-3 a day anyway.
The only issue now is the surgry waiting game, and i wanted people to be aware of what can happen so it doesnt come as a suprise like mine did yesterday! I honestly now ive had a day to think about it, im happy to startmy journey all over again and do it better the second time round! noone answered my original question for those that have had a replacement band how long in between??
thanks to all

Just be careful when you scuba dive, if your body isn't at its optimum, you are more likely to end up with the bends too.
it happened to me, and I was fit and healthy.
keep your dives shallow, and only 2 max per day.

good wishes to you. mary x

Re:General Chat #4 Reply to this message
Jodine,
You poor girl. Now heres the mother coming out in me..... what are you doing about the infection in the mean time...... what happens if you get crook while you are away?
Make sure you talk your travel plans thru with the doctor.
I have a very small infection at the moment from my body lift, it is a pea sized nothing, but pus ridden. WEnt to the doc and have anti biotics and antiboiotic cream to dress my little sore etc, but it is a staff infection and I feel as dead as a doornail! So dead that I had to have all my iron levels checked etc becaus ethey thoght I may have some other problems... all clear though. But an infection can knock you rotten, and clearly mine has.
Just look after yourself, I fully understand a week kicking back in Bali is what you need but just make sure that you have your medical care all in check.

Jodine has the doctor okd the trip to Bali? Can you eat ok? Their medical facilities are limited I'd hate to see you get into trouble up there. Also you probably won't be covered under travel insurance as it is on ongoing condition that you are being treated for. I don't want to ruin your holiday but feel you should be aware of these things.

Re:General Chat #4 Reply to this message
okay i will explain, the throat is i need to have the osphagus reconscruted as it has weakened all the nerves and formed a pouch abouve the stomach, this means the food stays there for 8-12 hours and this has been causeing my reflux!! the band has not slipped and in perfect condition on the out side (port is lodged into my stomach and has become infected and is now painful, I complained months ago that when they did a fill it had blood in the fluid, they didnt seem concerned but now they shouldve been! I have been well except the reflux which occured every night. I tought I has a tight band but all along it was the food sitting in the osphagus causing most of my issues, the band has to be removed to clear infection but also he said that it can become covered with body tissue and cause more probs. I will without a doubt get one put back in as My biggest fear is putting my weight back on. I feel a little ripped off in a way as the past yr has been hard for me band wise and i think i made huge sacrifices and all along if they listened to me my time couldve been easy. I hate to love my band most days but never regret doing it. i cried in the supermarket yesterday.. so silly... the doctors last words were go home and eat what ur missing!! OMG he shouldnt have said that .. it was so hard but I passed with flying colours. today my port is very sore and I feel a bit off but the reality of surgry is scary again and not looking forward to it.

No, generally speaking, you need to have an infection, if your cut finger was infected, or you had an infection some where else, then yes it can travel to the band, or any other prosthetic devise whatever it might be.
But, we have to get it into perspective, it isn't common, but can happen.
Your body isn't meant to have something foreign in it, its like a rejection.
I have to have antibiotic cover when I go to the dentist if there is blood, ie I have some thing done there.
when I had my shoulder surgery I had to protect my other joints with antibiotic cover for a few days.

I hope that explains it a bit better.there is no need to panic, just be aware, and remind our doctors, when we need to...

Re:General Chat #4 Reply to this message
So do you mean we can get a cut finger which then in turn travel to infect our band... wow thats scary.

So what were the symptoms... what kind of sick were you feeling...was it like and indigestion or over tight band feel...or extreme pain.

Im not in panic mode it just interests me and of course the more educated we are as to what to look out for the better we protect our selves.

As has proven here doctors dont always climb all over something but if between us we can have a shared knowledge of symptoms to keep an eye on then we can enourage our docs to investigate further.

I am so sorry to hear of this news you have been given. I will try and answer some of your worries, although each person is different each doctor different.
with an infection thats within your body, he will have to remove it, and clean out any infection he can dead tissue adhesions etc. not sure about the throat part. I would say the band has slipped to cause the throat part.
He won't put the band back straight away, you will have to wait a period of time, could be months. for the infection to resolve, and then the damage thats happened to your stomach will need time to repair.
I can't undertstand why he didn't investigate it when you weren't feeling well, it should have shown up on a simple blood test.
ANYONE with an Internal foreign body, wherever it is, be it a Band, joint replacement heart valve etc etc. is subject to infection, it can start as simple as a cut finger.
another reason we should have a regualr blood test.
I hope that might help you a little and others to be aware.
Have you been ill recently?

hope this helps a little.

Jodine, That is simply terrible for you! You would think that after having the band in your stomach for 5 years that you would be home-free.

I dont know about you, but I didn't realise that this could even happen! why do you have to have throat surgery as well, was this caused by the band as well?

Thinking of you and wishing you all the best, I'll look for your updates.
