Re:General Chat #4 Reply to this message
Yes, exactly right.

When I was scoping out my surgeon, his receptionist told me that most of the patients who have had problems had "persisted" with something they shouldn't have. For example they were repeatedly vomitting but didn't modify their meals. I have a friend who used to purge a lot and she slipped her band. The next band was fitted but didn't work the same as she had stretched her stomach permanently.

It isn't easy to follow the rules, though, is it?! We're hardwired to overeat and stuff ourselves. At least I am.

Goodnight :)

Re:General Chat #4 Reply to this message
Fully agreee, Cat - but there's another side to it too. Some patients just don't bother following the rules, and therefore end up with problems. It's a two-way street - the patient has to uphold their end of the deal too, otherwise things can - and do - go wrong.

Even the best surgeon may end up with a dissatisfied patient now and again, and it's not necessarily the surgeon's fault. As you say, things also go wrong not due to the surgeon.

Re:General Chat #4 Reply to this message
It is highly important that prospective lapband patients research the competency of their surgeons, including the number of surgeries they've performed. Don't look for a surgeon you like, look for one you know won't mess up the surgery.

That's what I did, anyway.

Then again, things also go wrong not due to the surgeon, but just due to the inherent risks of surgery.

That's my opinion, anyway.

Re:General Chat #4 Reply to this message
Hi all

I watched the show there is a risk with any surgery if it goes wrong there is no way of avoiding it if everything was done properly.

I was banded april 06 and i feel more alive now than ever.

I had several health issues that have already improved since i had lap band. if i had it 15 years ago i might no have had those issues as they are weight related.

I am only new to this site but can anyone tell me is there an age limit to be banded. My son is 15 and i see me at the same age . i would like to help him now.

Cheers
Cas

Re:General Chat #4 Reply to this message
Hi, I thought this story very tame. This is not new within health or in private hospital industries where drug companies, pathology companies and private hospital boards sponsor deals, conferences, subsidise trips away, supplies or samples so surgeon can experiment a new technique or get much reduced rate for the really neeedy. This has been going on for years. The sad part many involved do not consider this as a conflict of interest.
The story follows the Senate Inquiry report into obesity where 'we need to regulate the cowboys within the industry'. I do not consider Prof. O'Brien a cowboy more like a gentle man who has pioneered a profitable business. IVF is the same with cowboys.
Andy you rock!! Need more success stories of lap banding out there. I am still writing my book 'The Invisable Woman'! No it was not me who googled the Emerald Dr that caused him to be stood aside. Cheez I had moved away from s h t like that. Barb

Re:General Chat #4 Reply to this message
Hi there, gotta tell you that if the drug company didnt give money for research the trials would never be done and would never have been approved for human use. the government cant aforrd the current health system let alone paying for expensive clinical trials so Dr O'Brien takes the money from wherever he can and is a smart enough guy to decide whats the best band to use. He would use whatever gives him the best patient results and him the best reputation as a sugeon. I get my band dec 3 from dr baxter of the sunny coast. Ya hooo!!

Re:General Chat #4 Reply to this message
That story was ridiculous! Instead of showing a success story, they showed a girl who had just had it done. As for the man with the problems during surgery, I remember when I had my first consultation with Dr Winnett he made it clear that the bigger you are the more likely chance something might go wrong. That's why people with very high BMI's are operated on in hospitals capable to handle any situation. I didn't like the story, it was too negative. Anyone who is willing to undergo surgery to get a better lease on life is to be admired, it's a huge decision! You're whole lifestyle changes! And to all those people who say it's a "lazy way out", you're an idiot! liposuction is the easy way out!

Re:General Chat #4 Reply to this message
If it's the same story I have seen the ad for I think it is implying the doctor is getting a kickback from the banding company (for promoting and using their brand of band).
Could well be true. I know pharmacy's get dam good stuff for free for suggesting certain brands.
I don't know the doctor at all but I do know that he is a popular choice for people on here.

Jo there is a silicon dressing. I cannot remember the name but it is quiet expensive- $10 each but it saved my skin. The usual- primapore duoderm, micropore, cutifilm plus all latex based. You also need to tell staff as they need to change their gloves from latex. I need to continue to work in health so I stress only skin based allergy.

Hi Meagan
I have had my gall out and I can and alway have been able to eat anything.
I now if I eat an egg that is not fully cooked will get the trots. I do think this has something to do with the gall but other then that I am fine.
Every one is different with the gall like the band by what I hear.

Hi All, hope everyone is enjoying the gorgeous weather (or for those that don't like the heat are in front of a fan or air con:)
I had my gallbladder out two weeks ago, and was wondering if anyone can give me an idea of how their healing went and problems with eating anything with fat in it or drinking alcohol?
So far I've been keeping to an almost fat free diet as I ate a couple of cup cakes one day when I was at a party & boy did I regret it the next day! The same when I had one glass of wine. Am hoping that this will pass eventually as my body adjusts... hoping for some reassurance that this will pass as my body adjusts....

Linda.

Just a matter of curiosity, does the Berocca have iron in it? if so does it say how much.
I don't take iron in my vitamins, as it makes me very badly constipated, plus I have an HB of over 12 so don't need it any way, it does sound better having a drink that taking horse sized pills, which I cut in half.

I actually didn't bother with the vitamins until I was on proper food, if you want to take them I would get the liguid type. some people use the liguid ones all the time. I don't have to.,

Thanks Mary
Yes, thats what I will check with chemist today. My surgeon's office sells the chewable vitamin tabs so I think I will use those, would that be ok in liquid/mushy stage or should I get liquid vitamins?
Pat
Thankyou
