Got a question for anyone who might want to answer it!
How do you identify an overfill?
With all my research I did prior to being banded, I thought I'd know if I had an overfill if or when the time came, but now I'm not so sure. I imagined an overfill to be drastic, when you couldn't swallow liquids or saliva, but I'm thinking I may have a slight overfill.
Had my second fill on Monday, was fine during the fill, water went down okay in the Dr's office. Stuck to the liquids for three days, was fine with that, but now that I've tried the solid and semi solid foods, oh dear, it's not too good. Tried to have some chicken breast last night (served with plenty of plum sauce). They wouldn't stay down. Couldn't eat breakfast this morning (all came back up), so feeling sorry for myself, thought I'd get a scoop of low fat ice cream for lunch. This came back up, and I only had about a level tablespoon! All these foods were fine prior to my second fill.
I have managed about half a small bowl of sweet corn soup this afternoon, but it's taken about half an hour just to get that in. Thin liquids (like coffee, water etc.) seem to be going down okay.
So, does this sound like a slight overfill, or a normal bandits day? I suppose just rereading this, it does sound like an overfill, but I'm not sure if maybe I should give it another couple of days to see if it calms down, or go to see my Dr ASAP. |

Hi Belvil,
It is the "Allergan Advanced Platform" lapband - most commonly band used now.

hello
Can anyone tell me what an APM band is? My surgeon's secretary says that is what I have - a small APM band?
Thanks

well, there you go!
I guess as long as we're aware of it and it doesn't represent a problem with the band, it's all good!
thanks, davis323 |

| Summer, and menstruation chnages can icnrease the amount osmosis. therefore you can ahve icnrease loss. thsi si why i said 0.1ml to 1ml. so voer summer you may need see surgeon every 2-3 months. |

| ïf 3ml was the correct volume, you would be starting to get hungry and eat more with volume of 2.7ml. it is important you understand that this can happen and come back to see your surgeon for repalcement of that small fluid loss. This si main reason that we want a maximum of 6 months between appointments"(p.211) |

To quote the"master surgeon"Paul O'brein.
"There is always going to be a very small loss of fluid from the band over time. For example, if you had 3ml of fluid present and we checked the volume after a 6-month period, there would probably be about 2.7ml present. This occurs because the ballon of the band is not totally impermeable."(p.211 The LAP-BAND SOLUTION") |

Isn't it interesting how many explanations can be given for the same thing? Loss of fluid in the band via osmosis and evaporation? My surgeon told me that the band, being made of silicone, is impermeable, so it's unlikely that any loss is through osmosis or evaporation. He said that fluid may escape through the seal between the port and the tube that carries the fluid to the band.
Any others? :-) |

CHeryl,
Sometimes the fluid moves around in the band and tubing and I was told the same thing when I had 2 mls missing a few weeks ago.
As long as you are getting some restriction and you should be right. Though it did worry me at the time too.

Betty,
Have a look on the Optifast thread, there are a few people going through the same thing that can support you.
Best of luck and yes I am at the Avenue as well.

| Ive been 14 days now, and I still have a bad stitch that comes and goes in my right side...between my belly button and my right hip. Its not happening as often now, but it started on day 2 just as I was about to leave the hospital. I thought it was constipation, but after taking laxettes and fibre thats not a problem anymore and the pain persists, so maybe its still trapped gas from the surgery? I danced around last weekend at a band rehearsal which was a bit stupid but I couldnt help myself, didnt hurt during...only after did the stitch thing come back with a vengence. |

Hi Linda, I haven't been banded as long as you, but I'm just hovering around the right spot with my fills..little bit in, little bit out, little bit in...But I was told the first few days after an adjustment there can be some swelling around the band, so this might be your problem. Hope you are soon feeling okey dokey.

Hi Linda, as long as you an drink liquid I would wait and see how it goes. If you can't keep liquids down then you need to see the surgeon straight away. Have you been PBing when you try to eat? If you have, then your pouch may be inflamed and you should rest it with fluids for a couple of days and work your way up thru mushies to proper food. My fill has just worn off after 5 1/2 months. So I am getting topped up tomorrow. It does evaporate over time.

I have also posted this in the Fills Thread
Hi there guys,
looking for a bit of info here, I have been banded over 12 months now and hadn't had a fill for about 3 months.
I went to the doc's on Tuesday and he took all my fill out to see how much evaporation I had and it was a whole 1ml. We talked about this and he explained that being over summer etc, etc and body temp rising that this is not uncommon. He then replaced the fill including the 1ml so I was back to what i was before. The question i am asking is I haven't been experiencing heart burn or anything like that, but am having trouble with anything more than liquid. I'm not sure if this is just a normal thing that lasts a couple of days or if I should go back and get a bit taken out. Has anyone else had the same? Or is this just what restriction is supposed to feel like?????
Cheers and looking forward to your answers.
Thanks Linda |

Post operation pain - a question.
Hi all
I am 8 days banded and feel good except when I take a deep breath I have a stich like pain on my left side at my rib.
It does coincide with where one of my wounds are.
It came on day 3 and is still here.
I also have a bit of shoulder tip pain still.
Anyone know if this will go away. Is this still part of recovery.
I will see my surgeon next week but thought I'd ask those who have been through it.

Hello Betty
Good luck with your surgery. I was banded in November last year by Andrew Smith from CBS at The Avenue and have never regretted it. I've lost 34 kgs since then and actually look forward to visits to CBS as I reckon the staff are more excited about my losses than I am - and that's saying something. More than happy for you to email me at cwt3844atyahoodotcom if you wanted to chat. Best wishes - Cath |

I went shopping yesterday to get some warm tops..(horrible things around at the moment for husky sizes I might add) And as usual I bought some in my usual size and took them home with out trying them on... as cheesed off as I was about taking them back I had a lil spring in the old step rolling up to the counter and saying ...excuse me I bought these before lunch and when I tried them on at home they were tooooooo big!!!
Yup had to get 2...read it 2 sizes down...I am a happy lil vegemite at the mo. I am sure there are plenty of people out there who know the thrill of what I am saying. Its a gooooood goooooood feeling! |

Hi Betty,
Was banded by Stephen Blamey on 18/2/08 through The Avenue. Can't speak highly enough of the Melb Bariatric Centre. Staff are brilliant and the fact there are so many physicians available at any one time is very reassuring when it comes to fills. Have lost over 15 kilos and almost half-way to goal already!

| Cheryl, its not leaking its osmosis. the body through osmosis draws out somewate rin band ver so slightly this si why even on maintance you need to see the surgeon every 6 months to get a slight refil(0.1-1ml).This si why your surgeon said it was normal, because osmosis si normal. if it was leaking you would lose that amount in a month or less. most leaks the trestriciton only last 2 weeks before its lost. |
