My daughter had lapband surgery on 9th July in Darwin. She was in a private hospital under a specialist who has performed this op may times. Her lapband op went ok but within 2 days she was in acoma on a resporator and I was told she was going to die. She stayed in ICU asleep for 2 weeks, her body was poisoned, her lungs collapsed. She was operated on 4 times to save her life and the lapband was removed. A tear had been made in her stomache and wasnt noticed. My poor girl fought hard and after 5 weeks has finally come home. She has scars over her stomache that are horrific and she is very frail but she is alive thank god. Are there any other people who have had this trauma?
Im am trying to contact anyone from Darwin who may be in the same situation and can contact my daughter. |

Wow Nic. Thanks for your reply. I have an AP Band that is 10ml too! I specifically asked the doctor what was the average fill in a band that size and she said 5.8ml so I guess Im not average!
How is your weight loss going, despite not much restriction?
(Hope you don't mind me asking?)
Look forward to hearing from you again.

Thanks Losinit. I really appreciate your response. I am not sure whether to get another fill this week or not? I was told the average fill in my band is 5.8ml and I am already at 5ml. Don't really want the "cant eat at all" scenario that I read on here but do want/need heaps more weight loss. Catch 22 I guess.
Am reading these threads with interest and always grateful for everyone's input.
Cheers. |

| if you are in a private health fund they pay part, medicare pays not so much at all BUT! if you have a superannuation fund and an existing condition that is aggrivated by your obesity ( i did ) you can have your superannuation pay all your other out of pocket expences.. |

Do you mean reflux? If it is it could be because your band is too tight as you have suggested. To start with make sure you are eating really slowly and make sure all your food is very moist.
If it continues you need to go see the doc.
Good luck

one of the other chat threads talks about indigestion. I suggest that you try that remedy first.
Also if you can get a referral to Canberra at all - they have a clinic here at the rooms of the surgeon Mosse - every second Wednesday - just for adjustments etc. Try mushies again for a little while - yummy mash and gravy for winter. |

| I encourage everyone to use this chat room - I used it liberally when I was banded and met some great friends. It helped me enormously at the time and had no hesitation coming to ask questions. |

Hi Leeanne - thanks so much - I've been pretty good with all this and I was the leader of my support group because it all went so well for me etc....
I have one other question - you know when you have swallowed too much - or are having difficulty getting things down - its like the glands on the roof of my mouth swell so much they are painful - and then when its all better - it goes away. Sound familiar too ?
I have been great until I got a full time partner - he has been wonderful - but I am still coy about it all. He is nothing but supportive especially because my former partner left me because I was fat.
That seems years ago - so I wouldn't change a thing - except he buys chocolates and I can't say no !!! |

Hi jbaby i think your describing me hehehehe
im 11 mths banded and cant eat before about 1pm
cant do a cappucino before 11 am but can usually do an instant coffee at about 9am just slowly
and yes the sliming happens too
by evening time im usually good
so I think it is quite common...though bit frustrating sometimes but i have just gone with it and settled into the routine

Hi Guys - Can anyone identify with the following. I have been banded for about 2 years now - very successful - I lost 30kg and am happy with my 80kg weight. My issue is that I find that cannot eat anything in the mornings, not even juice - slowly I can have a coffee - lunchtime is not much better - and if I do try to eat - I have like a plug of phlegm that I need to bring up - and then I can eat normally. Evenings I seem to be able to eat relatively normally. Does anyone have a similar experience ?
Thanks for your comments |

Eeladnij,
I hear your frustration. I guess you just need to understand that it's different for every person as we are all individuals and our bodies don't all respond the same way.
I have - fortunately - managed to keep the weight loss going (except for 1 week), and I was banded mid-June. However, I had a much higher starting weight than most people here, and I have voluntarily placed myself on a maximum of 1000 cals a day. I know that we're not supposed to be 'dieting', but if I hadn't done that I wouldn't have made the progress I have.
Now, I will say there are others who have done similarly and stalled their weight loss. I do make sure that I eat 3 meals a days, and I also have small snacks in between. This method works for me now, as it seems to keep the metabolism ticking over rather than the body wondering where the hell the next feed is.
My doctor is not at all impressed with this tack I have taken, but I figure I am the one losing the weight, and if I can find a method that works for me I will stick to it. It may not be like this forever, but for the moment I ain't gonna fix what ain't broke!
Until you have a few fills and get some restriction, the band is doing nothing. Any weight you lose until you have restriction is all your own work. It can be quite some time before your bandy buddy picks up the game and plays as well! :-)
I'm no professional, I'm just saying what is working for me.
Good luck. |

Hi pappasvicky2006,
It does depend where you go, your surgeon, your anethetist, public hospital, private hospital, health insurance no health insurance.
I am going privately and mine includes the cost of the anethetist, surgeon consults, dietitan consults and psychologist consults. I am not sure if other places incorporate all of that into their program or not.

Thanks for your responses to my port query.
Seven weeks in and my weight loss has stopped. Totally hit the brick wall. With 5.5ml in my band I am puzzled as to how sometimes I can barely swallow weet bix and other times I could eat anything, particularly in the evening.
Can others please remind me of the bumps in the road along this weight loss journey. When I read about people who have lost 20kg in three months or less I am stunned. How did they do it?
Thanks. |

| no I didnt I went to medicare with the reciept after the op (even though you pay 1 week before the op you need to wait for the medicare friendly reciept from both the surgeon and the anethatist before you can claim which they send out a week or 2 after te op.) Medicare give you a rebate and a little slip you then take to the healthfund and they put it into your account. (in my case anyway) hope this helps |

| eeladnij I am feeling the exact same thing. Its a dull stich pain on the left under the largest cut. i can function and sleep but its just there just a niggling enoying stich. I told the doc and he said its musle pain but its been another week and its still there. he is away so when he gets back i will go see him again. It was sort of comforting to hear that you are going through the same thing cos i thought It may of slipped or something or I was the only one... My op was on the 7th Aug. As far as i know the port is stitched in place so they can find it when you get your fills goodluck |

Hi Eelad, yes it is stitched into place. It possibly might be swelling, not sure really. I would suggest if it is sore and you are suffering with pain, to give your surgeons office a buzz on Monday and ask.
Don't worry about it too much, sometimes the port can be found and other times not. I am sure all will be well.

Help please?
Can anyone tell me if the port is actually stitched in place or does it float around? Banded on 7th July I have been able to locate the port very easily however as of today not so easy, not to mentioned the pain/discomfort I have felt all day to the left and above of where large incision scar is located.
Has anyone else had pain in the region of where one of the small cuts were made (centre, left hand side)? Up until now very little discomfort or pain, bit like a permanent stitch really. Feels quite knotty and nobbly.
Any thoughts?
Thanks. |
