No worries, Barb.

Well I went ahead and made soup. I made up a huge batch because I wanted to use all my cabbage. Cabbage, celery, carrot and chicken stock cube soup. Added garlic powder at the end because I discovered to my dismay that I was out of fresh garlic.

Very tasty. Had a decent sized bowl of it which looked like it had roughly 2 cups of veggies (my daily allowance). I can do Optifast a lot easier if I am able to make a soup out of my veg and have a few cups of miso through the day.

Cat

Sorry I have no idea why I haven't been posting this in the Opti thread. Oh well :)

prior to the band i met friends for lunch every other day
now i just do heaps of other things

i never take my food i just pick from what is there,

my daughter married a few week-ends ago and told the manager of the reception venue, not to be insulted as i would not eat much.

you have come to terms with it so you are doing well

Re:General Chat #4 Reply to this message
Kara,
I am 4 and a half months banded and I went through a stage where I actually "mourned" the loss of food. I just kept positive and as the weight comes off you do feel a lot better. I also have an amazing surgeon who is great support to me. As for going out to dinner I always have entree size meals. If there is a problem I discreetly tell the waitress that I am banded and so far I have been treated very well. It is just not fair to pay for a full size meal.
So keep your chin up, things get easier and fall into place and all of a sudden you look back and realize how far you have come.
Regards Mary

Re:General Chat #4 Reply to this message
Hi everyone,
I'm 24 days banded (6/11), and last night I went to my mums for dinner. I took my own, (1/2 a piece of fish, and mashed veges), whilst everyone else had chicken, baked veges, bread rolls etc. Half way through dinner, I could feel I was getting upset. I finished my dinner (only took 5 mins really, as there was not much on my plate compared to everyone else!, then I excused myself from the table, and went and had a cry in another room.
It wasn't so much that i wanted the food my mum had prepared, or that I felt I was missing out, but in a way, I was, just that I felt out of place, and once finished eating, I didn't really know what to do with my hands!

Eating is such a social aspect of socialising with friends/family. How do we cope with it?

When I can eat normal food..I know it will only be an entree size meal, how do we cope with that in restaurants? when everyone else is having a large main meal?

Any advise would be muchly appreciated.

BM,

Oh yes. The surgery reverses many health conditions due to the dramatic weight loss and healthier eating habits. There's a thread on here about it. I will bump it to the front.

Hi, I am thinking of having lapband surgery, wondering if any of you had diabetes type 2 prior to surgery and now no longer diabetic??? I heard that sometime this can happen.

Re:General Chat #4 Reply to this message
I just bought coffee flavoured Optifast. It was my way of negotiating a desire to go through the drive through. It was $27 for 8! It does taste like a $3 shake, though. Very tasty.

I only just noticed that I can drink tea, diet soft drink, diet cordial, miso soup and veg soup. I'd overlooked that before. Perhaps that was why I was starvvvving ?

So can you drink as much of the above as you can fit?

Just wondering what peoples experiences are: if they still lost loads of weight whilst drinking lots of soup, tea, diet drinks, etc?

Re:General Chat #4 Reply to this message
If you really want to escape the flu/cold, or cure it, I guarantee this recipe - cheap as chips and works brilliantly. We have not had a day in bed, nor an antibiotic since I discovered this 10 years ago.

Place in a large mug:-

1 knob of fresh ginger, chopped
1 large clove of fresh garlic, chopped
1 lemon, juiced
1 tbsp Honey
Pinch of cayenne pepper
Add boiling water to fill the mug and stir.
Sip slowly and EAT ALL THE BITS! Go to bed and wake up all better! This is the best natural remedy for cold and flue EVER! Perhaps you can share this with your chemist friend lol!

Hi Mary

Thanks for that, I don't doubt there is a 14ml band but I know there isn't a 14ml SAGB (Swedish Adjustable Gastric Band). Do you know what brand your band is?

Have a good day.

Re:General Chat #4 Reply to this message
Pru

Endep and Cymbalta as you know are anti-depressants, they just happen to be the only medications that can provide a little relief to Fibromyalgia sufferers. Cymbalta is definitely an anti-depressant, you don't need to have fibromyalgia to have it prescribed to you. I prefer Cymbalta not just because it's better for not putting on weight but because it is a capsule, easy to go down. Remember Michelle (doit4mykidz)? she put on something like 16 kilos with Endep.

I have RLS too but have never heard of Tramadol helping so that was interesting. However, if you take Cymbalta DO NOT take tramadol without discussing it with your doctor, if you do it could be deadly, I'm not kidding, there is a Tramadol warning on the Cymablta brochure.

Sassy - PART 2

Following is reposted from the -

Lap Band Versus Swedish Band
http://au.messages.yahoo.com/lifestyle/lap-band/15 8835

_________________________ _________________________ _________________________

At my last doctor's Support Group my doctor and Scott from Johnson and Johnson discussed the SAGB (Swedish Adjustable Gastric Band). Those with SAGBs may be interested in the following.

There are now three SAGBs available in Australia.

Introduced in Aus 2003 - SAGB 2200-X(TM) Quick Close - 9ml.

Introduced in Aus 2005 - SAGB DD2VX(TM) Velocity - 9ml.

Introduced in Aus 2007 - SAGB BD3XV(TM) VC - 11ml.

Introduced in America 2007 - SAGB BD2XV under the name REALIZE not SAGB. (America refers to the SAGB as REALIZE)

I asked Scott if any SAGB band prior to 2007 held 10 or 11 mls. He replied "if it held 10mls or 11mls prior to 2007 it's not an SAGB".

Scott said that current band slippage stats for SAGB is less than one percent, just my luck to be in that one percent!

Re:General Chat #4 Reply to this message
Hi Sassy - PART 1

I'm a little confused by a couple of comments in your post. You said you chose the SAGB (Swedish Adjustable Gastric Band) yet you say you have "9ml in a 14ml band".

There are four SAGB models, only three are available in Australia but none of these have the 'recommended level' of 14mls, although it is possible to go above the recommended level under the strict guidance of your surgeon but this usually only happens in extenuating circumstances. For example I have the Quick Close 9ml model, after being banded for two years and not achieving restriction, Scott the Product Manager from Johnson and Johnson who sells the SAGB to the surgeons in QLD, recommended I go up to 11ml but only point 1 (not 1ml) of 1ml at a time as it is unsafe if you go above the recommended level too quickly, it was a very slow process but I got there. All I ended up with was reflux and still no restriction.

I was also surprised that your first fill was 7ml first up, I have heard of people with other brand bands being able to do this but I personally haven't heard or read of anyone with the SAGB being able to do that without problems. The most fill I have had at any one time is 2ml and even with that I had problems so I never have anymore than 1ml at a time. I currently have 8.7 in a 9ml band.

I suggest you show these 2 posts to your surgeon because if he has told you 14ml he might be referring to the length of the band. For the first two years I thought I had an 11ml band (before an 11ml band had been produced) but Scott told me that it is very common to make that mistake because in actual fact it is 11cm (not ml) in length not fill level, the fill level is 9ml.

Hi Cat,
Spot on, to what iam experiencing !! It's made me feel a lot better knowing that there is something I can do about it. Thanks once again for your info. Its amazing how the information given (or not given !) by each doctor is so varied. What would we do without this site to share knowledge and as in my case put minds at rest.
Cheers Lucy

Re:General Chat #4 Reply to this message
Lucy,

Okay, so I went and got it off my fridge. Let's see if it is word-for-word!

"Add Fluid" - Hungry; big meals; looking for food -
<Sub-optimal weight loss>

"Optimal Zone" - Early and prolonged satiety; small meals; satisfactory weight loss or maintenance
<Optimal weight loss>

"Reduce Fluid" - Difficulty swallowing; reflux and heartburn; night cough; regurgitation; poor eating behaviour

Hope that clears it up :)

Thanks Cat
Amazing that the symptoms I am experiencing are word for word of an overfill on your chart! I know I should have made an appointment earlier but I just kept putting up with it thinking I was doing something wrong (eating wise) Thanks so much for your information I will try and get in to see him as soon as I can because I am sure it isn't doing my body any good (reflux etc) Cheers Lucy

Re:General Chat #4 Reply to this message
Dear Lucy,

Yes, it sounds like you have too much restriction. I have a fridge magnet I was given by my surgeon. It is a flow chart that shows the symptoms for too little fill, just the right amount and too much. What you describe is almost word-for-word the way it is described under too much fill/stoma too tight. Reflux, PB, discomfort.

All the best,
Cat
