Re:General Chat #4 Reply to this message
Hi Natalie,
Congrats on making this life changing decision. I actually had only a blood test, and s sleep aphnoea test because I was a snorer. Some surgeons require their patients to go to phychologists, have endoscopies, go to dieticians, all depending on your surgeons policy. I have never yet heard of anyone who has been rejected and I have been banded since August 2006. How long will also depend on your sugeon, I have known people to get in within a few weeks, I personally could have been banded 3 months after my appt but waited an extra month as I had a holiday booked and didnt want any probs going away just after banding. I assume you have private health cover, if not then it is a whole new story. Hope all goes great for you on Monday.

Re:General Chat #4 Reply to this message
Hi My name is Natalie and I currently weigh 107 kilos and I am feeling disgusted with myself.

I have my initial appointment with Dr Mackie in Orange NSW on Monday. I am really unsure of the inital steps.

What tests are done to see if you are suitable for banding?

How long after your intial appointment do you need to wait to have the surgery?

I have made the decision I want to do this and I just want to do it NOW.

Your advise would be greatly appreciated

Re:General Chat #4 Reply to this message
Halfamike, Great stuff on getting to your BMI of 27. Motivation can be from within. Do you like who you see in the mirror today? You should be proud of what you have done.
From my observations many banders are nutritionally deficient in many nutrients primarily due to restricted food choices caused by the band. Lacking essential nutrients like the B group (especially B6 and B12), Vit C, zinc can lead to being physically and mentally dull. Check your nutrient intake, check that you are taking good vitamins see your GP for B12 and h o m o cysteine levels (yahhoo thinks this word is offensive!). If your GP trivalises this approach to health find one who does. www.acnem.o r g will have a list of excellant Dr's who specialise in nutritional and environmental medicine.
I have made incredible changes to my life as I too have gone from a BMI of 40 pre-band to now 26.8 since august 08.
Keep searching for answers for your motivation levels. Don't accept second best because you have made this change for yourself over the past 2 years. Bands rock, we rock but we need to value ourselves first. Barb

Re:General Chat #4 Reply to this message
Geesus Halfamike,

78% of your excess - that is incredible! What a shame that you are not feeling absolutely terrific right now. Perhaps there is something else that is responsible for your low motivation? Is there something going on in your personal life that is weighing you down.

Maybe you need to re-prioritise your goals. You are going into an entirely new phase of life now that your weight is mostly gone. Perhaps the original mindset which you needed when you were starting out on this journey is no longer relevant.

I think its normal to go through a re-adjustment phase after such a big change. Just remember how far you have come. You are as good as home. Yesterday is gone, tomorrow never comes, so all we have is the present moment. Enjoy your enormous success. Praise your achievements. We are each responsible for our own happiness!

Sorry for the rant, perhaps it wasnt exactly what you were looking for, i dont know. But all the best. I think what you have done is awesome!

I have had my band for two years now, and I have lost all motorvation. I have lost 78% of my excess bodyweight to get to 27BMI.

Suggestions on how to get my motorvation back?

Re:General Chat #4 Reply to this message
and if the use of the word druggies offends, well I don't feel sorry as that is a life style choice like many other addictions, my husband did not have a choice to be a type 1 diabetic. that can happen to anyone from birth and is not to be confused with type 2 diabetes

like I said, re the insulin dependent diabetic needles, they are now free but USED to be a cost for my hubby. I think people lobbied them because of the freebies the druggies got.

Re:General Chat #4 Reply to this message
people get 'more handouts' than others in the attempt that we all live the same style of life. Why begrudge that?

As for insulin dependent diabetics paying for needles, hearing this makes my blood boil. There are nsps (needle and syringe programs) funded by the Govt which give out free needles to anyone - legal and illegal injecting drug users. we all have our drugs be it food, grog or other substances. glass houses people.

Re:General Chat #4 Reply to this message
I kind of agree with Jodine to a degree, majority of over weight people got themselves there.

HOWEVER there are often circumstances that help it along, mental illness, abuse, and like in my case hypothyroidism. I do not blame that for my being fat so much as having been a fat kid who was started on diets way too young. I truly believe that is the death knell to a child and puts them on the road to obesity.

With my two sons I was so obsessed that they would not get fat that I watched their diets like a hawk. poor kids, but I never had them on diets as such.

They are now in control of their own bodies and are not fat while I remain stuck in this vicious circle of yoyoing up and down. I cant wait to be banded and my first appointment is very soon via the public system. I am gratful that I can get banding done in Perth courtesy of the tax payer and I think I will be forever grateful actually.

I think that the most unfair medical thing for me was watching drug addicts get free needles while my type 1 insulin dependent diabetic hubby had to pay for needles, fortunately the government saw fit to change that law some years ago. It does seem to me that certain groups in society get more hand outs than others.

Look Jodine, i realise that i may be being a bit confrontational myself. I can be like that sometimes, when i'm stressed. Lets just leave this debate where it is as it's not really important in the big scheme of things. Have a good trip.

Re:General Chat #4 Reply to this message
bovine20022001, who you were actually addressing, was not really the point. perhaps you might consider that we may not want your views about fat people expecting sympathy etc, expressed in such an emotionally charged way, to all of us! Perhaps you should have had the courage to address the person directly, and save us the angst.

Why should we have to wear your frustration? Saying you are venting does not excuse it. You say that people should be able to have their own opinions but according to you, that doesnt apply to anyone who might think fat people deserve sympathy! See the irony?

Now i am not going to continue with this because each to their own. Perhaps your vent wasnt directed at us but it seemed like it was and thats the problem when people beat around the bush.

I would say no hard feelings, but i dont appreciate you addressing me as peahunter.

Re:General Chat #4 Reply to this message
peahunter my post was not aimed at the person you stated and in all thoughts i did say that it was not intended to offend anyone but I am sick of listening to people not only here complaining about the fact they deserve sympathy for being fat.. do we look at fat people and go aww NO! God I hope noone looks at me that way!
It is accessable to everyone if needed, i got mine on the public health system at no charge so i guess im lucky but so are the other 8000 people banded on the public system every yr just in perth!

I did also say I was venting as I took a few days to think about a post sent to me only that having someone dictate what i should do .. peeved me off.

oh well at least I can chill out for a few days and watch the world go by from the outdoors!!

Re:General Chat #4 Reply to this message
Jodine,

i think you may have misinterpreted uclessofme's comment regarding the assistance that is provided to drug addicts and alcoholics! The way i read it, she was referring to the fact that lap-banding is not publicly funded but drug and alcohol withdrawal programs are. Her post seems to be responding to the lap-banding segment on the tv where they polled people to ask their opinion on whether lap-banding should be publicly funded. I, and 85% of the population (according to the pole) agree that lap-banding should be publicly funded, just as drug and alcohol withdrawal and support programs are.

I disagree with you entirely, that 'drug addicts dont have tools, that they are taught to use their willpower'. Drug addicts have methadone, naltrexone, buprenorphine, intensive residential withdrawal programs, hospital assisted withdrawal programs, intensive counselling programs, the list goes on and on.

I dont know who you are referring to when you say some people have dictated their opinions but in my view, all the comments on here are just opinions.

I do agree that obese people need to take responsibility for their own health but i believe that the vast majority of banders are doing just that by being willing to go under the knife, so to speak, in order to assist them deal with their weight problem.

As you said in your post, i do not intend to offend, but i think you were off the mark. Yes i do realise that we are all entitled to express our own views, but when it seems like they based on incorrect facts, i think it is ok to express an opposing view. I do this with the utmost respect.

I hope you enjoy your holiday in Bali.

Jo

I agree with what you are saying but I guess the biggest difference I see with between drug addicts, smokers & alcoholics to food-holics is the fact that you can (providing you put in the effort)stop cold turkey without ever having to touch it again, you don't need to keep taking them in order to survive where as it's not so easy with food.

But I agree with the fact that in most circumstances we got where we are by ourselves and have no-one to blame except ourselves and we need to work with the band and use it as a tool it's is such a shame that it comes at such an expensive tool available to only those who can afford private health insurance it or as in my case have to go through rigorous paperwork and applications to access my super.

Hope you have a great holiday in Bali

Re:General Chat #4 Reply to this message
not to offend but.. drugs are illegal. you have to seek them out.. food is not and we DID do this to ourselves!! Some people need to take responsiblity for what they are and so do drug addicts both i agree on but I do get sick and tired after 5 years of banding listening to people feel like they deserve sympathy.. support yes 100% but synmpathy for being fat no.. and im still fat so im no preacher but it makes me angry people get on here like they where forced feed and told not to get off their butts! Lap band is a tool not a miracle, Drug addicts dont have tools they are taught to use their will power something we lack!! good luck to every one who gets of their butt and make the band work, and to all the drug addicts wether it alcohol or food my hats off to ya for quitting. No ive never done drugs either!
I will be on my second band soon and I dont blame anyone or the band I just want to be healthy, honestly people that come on here need to dont dictate their opinions, Offer them, not tell people how they should live or do what they do, give a positve comment or give example of past but do not tell a bander or someone who is getting banded what to do with such a one sided opinion.
Sorry everyone but I kinda peeved on at some comments and have to vent, i leave to go to bali tomorrow and hope i come back in a better frame of mind!
had to vent
