Re:General Chat #4 Reply to this message
HI all,
2 days home after band removal and my weight has already gone up 2.3 kg. whats that about?..I dont even think Ive eaten 1kg worth of food! My hunger level is low, i am not eating much, I am running around like mad cause Ive got so much energy...but my weight goes up???????????
I didnt want my band back, but is this the only option for my future?..Feeling very disheartened..

Does 'starvation' mode stay forever or can it be reversed?

Re:General Chat #4 Reply to this message
I'm with Medibank Private and they covered everything except the gap payments to the surgeon and anaesthetist. You have the option of full cover or a small payment to the hospital on admission. For me this was a one off charge annual charge of $250. No one covers the gap payment to the surgeons and you need good cover incase of unexpected problems. Post op care is covered by Medicare. Again everything is covered except the gap. I will have an $80 out of pocket expense for each fill. The wait time is 12 months. Mack

No I am in Sydney.... you need to do your research and ask. I found this surgeon purely by seeing a bandit (Billie - wonder how she is going?) at a get together here in Sydney.

Hi Mel, just wondering if you are from Perth? and if so who yr surgeon is.

I'm going to be looking for arm surgeons in the next few weeks. I have a couple of names for tummy tucks, breasts etc but no-one that does arm.
thank you

Babs4000

Thanks Babs.
I feel much better now, although I have terrible trouble sleeping. I was told thats also a side effect of low B12. I haven't had a re-check yet I think thats next week.

Oh another pearler I have discovered in my journey now supported by ACNEM learning- one cannot 'just' take calcium tablets as we age to protect against osteoporosis without also taking a magnesium supplement as well. Not all calcium supplements are equal so research, research and ask. Barb

Re:General Chat #4 Reply to this message
Mary, really glad you got your B12 checked. You will begin to feel more energetic and the foggy mind will clear once the levels rise.
Vitamin D is becoming another interesting nutrient. Increasingly with the use of sunscreen, covering up with the slip slop campaign many have become deficient. You need to be judicious when to go in the sun. If you burn you will destroy any Vit D uptake. Just enough to pink.
ACNEM medico's are the real heros in the new way we look at nutritional and environmental health. Look them up on their contact page. One Dr changed my life around. Cheers Barb

Re:General Chat #4 Reply to this message
The intention though not always the reality following banding is a very low calorie diet. Regular monitoring of specific blood levels is described in the literature as common amongst patients with bands even thought there are clearly some exceptions. Most doctors also recommend a daily multivitamin supplement and iron. Vitamin D is essential to the storage of calcium which is very important to us all and is only formed in the body in the presence of sunlight and exercise involving major muscle groups so don't forget to get about 10 minutes walking in the sun every day.

I get a blood test every 12 months... if not from my surgeon, from my gp. I think it is wise whether you are banded or not.

Re:General Chat #4 Reply to this message
I read somewhere that if losing a lot of weight it is good to take B12 and Folate (you can get this as one tablet), this is to prevent h o m o cystine levels to get high, which apparently is just as bad as high cholesterol. I am not a health professional, but I did read something about it.

Re:General Chat #4 Reply to this message
P.S Selina

The reason for the blood tests are due to Recent Research that showed that patients with our type of op were due to the risk of developing the high levels of H---CYSTIENE as I posted previously.
I personally dont believe it hurts to do these tests, as it is best to know now,if levels of something r low or high, than wait till there is a problem and then have to go into damage control to fix something. Once every 6 mths doesnt hurt, for your own piece of mind, my Dr doesnt mind at all, she believes its better to be 1 step ahead than 10 steps behind.

Re:General Chat #4 Reply to this message
obrienselina

I recently had a blood test for something completely different to banding, and in that blood test I was found to be very low in B12.
I had to have weekly shots for a month and now on monthly for 3 months then 3 monthly and check some where along the way.
I eat a great healthy diet take vitamins etc. so I have no idea. but someone said to me we run out of B 12 we have all we need when we are born then we just run out some do some don't.
I haven't heard of this before.
So even if you are well its a good idea to know whats going on.

selina,

I have my blood tests every 12 months. My GP likes to do it because I was borderline diabetes prior to banding. He also notice a drop in my vitamin D levels last time as well.

Re:General Chat #4 Reply to this message
Hi Selina,
I actually recieved a letter from my nutritionist, to go drs for referal to get some blood tests done,
for; IRON STUDIES
LIPID PROFILE
h o m o CYSTEINE LEVEL
MAGNESIUM
ZINC
CHROMIUM
VITAMIN D

THE h o m o CYSTEINE is an independant marker of cardiovascular risk, apparently when we have gastric band surgery whether lap or sleeve, we r at risk of developing high levels of this, thus at risk of heart disease.

I had to laugh when I got this letter as most of us have had this procedure done to reduce the weight, thus reduce the risk of heart problems.

While u r there getting a referal, if u have thyroid disease ask for your levels to be tested too, as you may need to reduce your medication as w/loss reduces the amt of medication required with alot of people when they lose weight. i have almost halved mine, so far.

Hope this helps
Jo :) sorry yahoo saw the H@@@cysteine as offensive language????!!!!
