HI and thanks to those who responded to my questions. I took your advice and had the stitches taken out immediately by my GP (there were only 3 where the port was, the rest were dissolvable). That was a huge relief because they were starting to "pull" which was painful.
Have called my surgeon and am just waiting for an appointment to see him to hopefully get my band activated; It will be 6 weeks this week and I am keen to see what difference it will make.
My operation cost over $10,500.00, so I'd like to get on with losing some weight after such a huge outlay. (Had to get a loan to pay for it...!)

| Fabulously well and very determined. Best thing is that my weight has not gone up sticking to +/- 2kgs so I must have been listening to the dietician :) Barb |

Dear Contessa,
I don't think what you are going through sounds that normal I think you should probably phone someone and get more advice. I have my surgeon's mobile for emergencies and I would be phoning him if I felt as bad as you. Maybe if you can't get to ER perhaps the Pharmacy might be able to suggest something for pain relief specific for lapbanders. Please look after yourself girl. |

An announcement- finally after 11 weeks of careful wound care I now do not have any dressing on the port site. I had the port removed November and the entire band 17/12/08. A long journey. Since my banding 7/8/08 I have had only 4 weeks not having to do a dressing.
Now I have to wait 3-6 months before I can get rebanded. Barb |

I really think you should take yourself off to hospital.
It seems to me that you are in too much pain at 48 hours. Its not a bad idea to get it checked any way just to reassure yourself, and know all is okay. peace of mind goes a long way.
Emergency may well see you quite quickly the troops don't usually get there until early hours of the morning !!!
good luck and take care. keep us informed how you are doing. |

Thank you both for responding. I'm shuffling around and can't sit down I'm in so much pain so I think I'll try and get a locum out here. Saturday night at E&R I probably won't get seen until the criticals are attended to anyway.
Glad to hear that this is normal. |

Contessa,
It sounds quite normal. I found day 1 was fine, but day 2 - 5 I was in a lot of pain. Day 2 being the worst. That is when you find you are very stiff and sore. You shouldn't be so uncomfortable, though. Going to hospital isn't a bad idea as they can probably give you some more adequate pain relief. I was still on morphine on day 2.

| I had surgery in Perth Hollywood Hospital at about 10:00am yesterday and came home about 10:00am today. I too have pain in my left shoulder but it settles after a couple of dissolvable panadol. I also feel bloated but not to the point of too much worry. I wonder if yours is normal pain or if you are in fact in need of a trip to emergency. Wishing you all the very best. Look after yourself. |

Hi all,
I had the surgery 48 hours ago and am still in considerable pain. I'm trying to sip water but get pretty awful upper back pain. I'm now unable to even sit down, I have to stand as the pain gets worse when I sit.
I don't feel good at all and am thinking of going to Emergency unless this is normal and everyone goes through it.
Can anyone advise? |

calypo ice blocks... it has to be the calypo for some reason
red cordial...not diet... red cordial will stop vometing in its tracks
Baked bean soup
small can of baked beans
equal amount of tomato soup
put through the blender then add a good 2 tablespoons of cheese and nuke in the microwave and stir
these three things helped not only me but about 10 others
I can remember sitting on the kitchen floor with my head between my knees thinking I was gonna throw up or pass out. My daughter created and made me the baked bean soup and I ate it where I sat. I never looked back after that it seemed to give me the right dose of protein, carbs and fat to pick me right up
Hope this helps |

| Hi eeladnij, I was banded Aug 06 (2 1/2 years ago) and sailed thru no hiccups at all although experienced shoulder tip pain if I overate or rushed my food. Last month started to experience same symptoms as you, dreadful stitch under left ribs and continual s.t.p, went down the same medical path as you- same tests and doctor and surgeon suggesting probably constipation. After I told them no that is not the problem as I make sure I am regular by drinking gallons of water and pear juice daily they are baffled. Last Tuesday I had a little fill put back in and it was suggested not to eat solids just have a liquid diet to see if pain disperses. I have done this right up until today but have had the pain still. Will see my G.P on Monday and ask for an ultra sound to see if stones are causing this pain as suggested in a couple of posts today. One would think after plain sailing and reaching goal weight after 8 months one would be out of the woods pain wise! Hope you or I get some answers soon. Thanks Billie |

Hi Michelle, when I was on fluids I got to that stage too. I found I was dehyrdrated. I upped the water intake and felt a ton better. I was very light headed.

Hi anyone, my surgery was 8 days ago and I am on the liquid phase, and I just feel norsious and drained. Like I am going to vomit but can't, I don't know if this is because of hunger or lack of water, I have no idea. All I know is that I feel awful. What do you suggest?
Michelle

Thanks Leanne, I will certainly try and stop at a cup full. Like all of us I guess, it is difficult to know when to stop, particulary if you have been looking forward to dinner and it's something yummy.
Anyway I know what you are saying and appreciate your input. I need someone to remind me of that occasionally.
Cath, your family and friends may surprise you. From experience though the ones who know the least about the proceedure seem to have the loudest voices. Take it from one who knows. It was my work collegues for me that gave me all the horror stories, thus I haven't told them I have had it done. They are none the wiser and think I am dieting, yet again.

Victory,
Thanks for the idea. I trotted off to IMVS this morning and I shall see in a few days how my TSH levels are. I don't know if I will make it to work on Monday, I feel so bad.
Anyone have trouble with eating crackers? They seem to keep coming up since my fill. Either that or I'm eating too much/too fast. It always happens with crackers.

| Thanks San for the encouraging message. I have now had the courage to discuss my desire to be banded with a few close friends and a counsellor and they were all pretty positive. It's family I am more worried about telling actually because they are less likely to hold back if they don't agree with my decision. In a few weeks I will have all my appointments and then need to make up my mind. Reading about your experiences is helping a lot. Thanks... Cath |

Even though we are banded much of this is still about will power.....even if you can eat more than a cup full of food....stop at the cup....I know it can be darn hard but maybe keep a food diary for a week.....jot down everything you eat
for a while measure your food and dont exceed the cup full per meal....have a small healthy snack in between meals....find the way thats is best for you to combat the need to eat more at a meal.....so maybe less volume and include a couple of snacks that are filling
try not to go over the cup of food no matter how tempting and i mean that very kindly I am in no way critisizing just trying to offer some suggestions
some of us find even with good restriction we dont actually feel full....i dont remember feeling full for a very long time but as long as your satisfied I think thats the key
have more protein on your plate and less of the other foods
it is and can all get very trying at times and frustrating for many we have to learn a new way of knowing we have eaten enough to keep us satisfied

Hi Jobeenicisa,
I too felt hungry after my first couple of fills. I have lost 18 kilos since banding on the 12th Nov 08 and at present have a total of 10 ml in a 11 ml band. I still am not at the sweet spot but hope it's not far away as I don't have a lot of room left in my band for fill. I worry that when my band if full, what happens then if I haven't reached the sweet spot. My doctor thinks it is getting close so I can only hope he is right. I have found that for the first couple of days after a fill you seem to be satisfied after a small amount of food then, I don't know what happens but you seem to be able to eat a whole lot more then you should. I am eating off a bread and butter plate but a lot more then a cup and this worries me. Will it stretch my stomich. Anyway I think you should call your doctor and arrange a fill ASAP, this should make you feel better and get back on track. San.. |
