Re:General Chat #4 Reply to this message
Absolutely agree, Col - I am in the same boat. I think complacency has set in a bit with me. Lots of compliments, and starting to get used to what I see in the mirror, and think 'yeah, I'm actually ok now' - knowing full well I have further to go. The resolve slackens a bit and old habits creep back in. First it's one little treat in the day, then another . . . . . and before you know it things have gone awry. I'm back on track for the moment.

Maybe when people give me a compliment, I just need to ask them to keep telling me I am fat and I'll never reach my goal! That would certainly change my attitude. The defiant nature would come out and I'd be thinking 'I'll show you!'.

Re:General Chat #4 Reply to this message
Hi Lynda....what you should do is go back to the basics like when you started with your band....watch what you are eating again....you may have gone back to too many carbs and eating too fast.It is a problem that I think comes back to complacency and just getting used to living with your band and being comfortable with it and all of a sudden you start with the bad food choices and habits again...I did anyway.I know that I had to re-evaluate my foods again and to start looking at what I wanted the band for in the first place.I think we look at ourselves in the mirror and begin to like the new look and slacken off rather than keep heading towards our goal....good luck...Col

Hi Lynda, relax this is quite common. Sometimes if your band is too tight you eat c rap because it goes down. Make an appointment, get some fill out, make better food choices and you will be on your way to losing again. Have a look at this thread.

HELP! I am putting on weight had my surgery about 18 months ago. I am finding alot of things hurt going down and still have some blockages. Not sure what to do I wonder due to knowing if the food is going to hurt I tend to eat wrong things knowing they go down easy. Now I am embarrassed to go back to the docs knowing I have put on around 4 kilos but can't let anymore than that go on that is for sure.

Hi Mary, sometimes the links go missing when they cross over pages, ie, page 1 to pg 2. They do re-appear but it takes a while... it is common. I started a link / thread for those of us being banded in March 2010, and have saved it to my favourites - it's the only way to find the links when they cross pages :)

Hi nickwall77
I didnt have any probs with iron until after banding...my level went down to 4. I had 2 weeks of iron shots 3x a week. That bought my levels up to 10.
I now take iron supplements. I have to go and have another blood test in 3 months to check levels.

Hi, i was just wondering i have an appointment with George Hopkins in January for lap banding and im alittle concerned as i currently have issues with low iron. When banded do most people take multi vitamins anyway or is this not needed? Does anyone else have iron probs before or after banding?

Re:General Chat #4 Reply to this message
Try the icy milk it usually does the trick but after it clears it stick to non acidic liquids... so no tom soup or coffee or tea etc...

I often find that cuppa soups agrivate reflux so steer clear of them . Try milo and green tea.

Ice blocks are great too they seem to sooth the stoma.

However it does sound like your a wee bit too tight even with just half a mil put in so be prepared to ring your doc for a smidge out

Re:General Chat #4 Reply to this message
I only got 1/2 ml in this time, as I had an overfill a couple of fills ago and am a bit cautious.
Anyway I might try and tough it out and see how I feel tomorrow.
Thanks for your reply

it sounds to tight but can be swollen if doc has put more than normal in, i would ring him or wait until tomorrow and see how you feel, they do say liquids after a fill for a few days is high reccomended normally. If you feel like its blocked try some milk very cold so you can feel where it goes or pineapple juice.
good luck

Re:General Chat #4 Reply to this message
Just a quick question guys.
I had a fill yesterday, and my band is super tight, I stuck with liquids yesterday, and was all ok till I had some tomato soup, had reflux last night.
Woke up feeling better this morning, had a bit of coffee, later I tried some mashed avocado and it's been hell since..
I'm just not sure if it will ease up or if the band is too tight, or if I'm just a bit swollen from the reflux and purging the avocado..
Any tips/suggestions welcomed..

Re:General Chat #4 Reply to this message
to unzippin an ironbark

i decided after reading what i wrote to ring the surgen which is hard as to catch him is one in a million at the public hospital and he returned my call straight away angry that i hadnt been given an appt soon, so he said the 16th if im feeling ok and he said the pus had grown wild things..gross but was no concern unless the tube ruptures so yes i have to look out for those signs you said, however im still on a major high from my trip last week diving so im going to live on that for a bit.
the sandwich deal sucked!! I told him he laughed and said oh well better out than in!! I will have a metting with him and head guy then to decide what further action to take.
thanks for ur comments though.)

Oh Jodine you poor lil buggar! I would say your band site is swollen due to the infection hence the inability to scarf a samby.

I am impressed at you outlook on the whole situation..still so posative and looking forward to another round.

Yes I would feel the same re the antibiotics...most cafuzzling isnt it

Re:General Chat #4 Reply to this message
Hey Jodine,
You poor thing, it sounds like you've had some dramas.

Have they told you the signs and symptoms of infection that are serious to watch out for? Especially if you're not on any antibiotics and there has been obvious pus extracted.

*A rise in body temperature (fever)
*Feeling generally unwell
*Skin is hot to touch or redness - probably around the port site in your case
*Anything out of the ordinary that could indicate illness eg. Vomiting or Diarrheoa for example

Just a few things off the top of my head. But systemic infection can be very serious, so look out for the signs and get it treated earlier rather than later.

Take care and good luck.

Re:General Chat #4 Reply to this message
unzippin

No they didnt give me a real reason just suggestions..like corrosion of the tube becos it may have lodged in the stomach, also my reflux was really bad caused from the osphagus (cant spell it) is very small and needs reconstructing. Also they said that the band can be infected from the fills being done wrong= example they puncture the tube trying to get the port too many times.. which i remember that student docs use to take 6-7 goes doing mine and im guessing thats prolly more like what has happened, the doctor drained off 6mils of the worst brown/green pus out of my port and now im just waiting for the removal of it for a replacement, I am confussed however that no antibiotics havent been given considering how there is an infection inside of me! also my band has been so called empty for almost 2 weeks and I still cant eat a sandwich which was the only thing for 5 years i dreamed of eating!!!!( i just tried and it didnt go down)

Re:General Chat #4 Reply to this message
Hellooooo
Well It's been an interesting few weeks. My band was removed in October, and I feel so insecure without it, it's very strange, I never thought I'd want it back....but Ive booked in for 19th January for Number 2 band. I hope this one goes OK.
Are there any threads for people who've had their bands removed/replaced due to slippage?

cheers!

To Linda and Delia,

Thank you so much for your advice. I went to that link and read most of it. I will go back to it when I have more time. I now know I was definitely too tight, but, I am still glad I stuck it out. It is such a learning experience, even when you 'think' you know all there is. Thanks ladies!
I checked the scale today, and I am still steadily losing. I've lost 5lb since Nov 18! Take care all.

Re:General Chat #4 Reply to this message
hi all
well on liquids i lost 16 kilos in just on 2 weeks so everyone is different but most ive spoken to have lost on liquids as well.
as for the fill yes youve proberly got enough in but you still need to food in to loose weight remember the body needs fuel! my surgen says you should be able to eat as normal just not the quantity, dont deprive ur self and live on liqiuds or mush all ur band, life becomes miserable if you do. The Dieticain for lapbands recommennds 5 small cups of food spread out over a day is good eating!

Just to clarify something Delia said to rkfhop2. I think rkfhop2 is in America. Over there an entree is a main course and an appetiser is an entree size for us in Australia.

Cheers
