Jodine (continued)
I've always been able to eat everything, steak, bread, etc without probs apart from the occasional blockage/PB but they are far & few between. I don't need straws to drink I usually gulp drinks at home but use caution when I'm out & sip drinks so I guess compared to you I'm very fortunate.
I felt sad reading your post, I'm not sure whether or not I'd still have my band if I had to persevere with what you have to do on a daily basis. Having said that though my band journey was a very long one & not easy due to Chronic Illnesses (Fibromyalgia and Reactive Arthritis) & weight gaining medication playing havoc with my band but I'm proud of myself that I never lost sight of my weight goal, regardless of the fact I lost 40 kilos after banding, put 30 kilos back on and had to lose it again. My 4 year band journey showed me that when it comes to reaching a goal I'm a patient & determined person which I never thought I was. I never lost sight of my dream therefore I'm reaping the rewards now.
I'm always the slowest eater but I don't mind that at all because prior to banding I was always the first to finish. When I dine out now I see overweight people shovelling food in their mouth & I'd cringe because I think "omg that's what I used to look like!"
I've been overweight all my life, slow eating now helps me feel even more feminine (all the years I was fat I never felt feminine) but what I haven't eaten within 20 minutes usually gets left because I learnt in the early days of banding that if you sit in front of a meal for an hour you will consume it whether you need it or not so I try to stick to the 20 minute rule.
In relation to eating I read a book soon after banding which helped me a lot even though it is not related to banding.
French Women Don't Get Fat by Mireille Guiliano
My advice to anyone on banded journeys is to never lose sight of your goal, it will happen, some of us just take much longer than others.

I was banded January 2005. I don't have time now to read every day, I catch up every few weeks. Since reaching goal weight this year my life has taken a complete turn around. 2 major debilitating chronic illnesses I had have gone into remission and I no longer have Diabetes Type 2 or High Blood Pressure. I literally have more energy now than when I was in my 20s so I'm rarely home. I'm out most nights dancing & days working at home or out volunteering.
Dancing is the only form of exercise I like apart from swimming, I hate gyms. I do 50's Rock N Roll, Clubbing, Latin, currently learning Modern Jive/Le Step to Top 40's music. I never ever thought I'd be able to jump around on a dance floor considering nearly 2 years ago I couldn't walk and thought I was going to end up a bed-ridden invalid for the rest of my life.
I used to think that blondes don't have more fun, it's just that they're so dumb they think they do. Well I've had to eat my words because blondes really do have more fun, either that or I'm dumber than ever. When I reached goal weight I was getting a lot of male attention that I wasn't used to but since I've gone from brunette to blonde the male attention has gone into overload and I'm having so much fun enjoying the single fancy free life. No doubt I'm going through a mid life crisis and I'm enjoying every moment, I'm making up for all of the years I lost staying at home and not socialising because I felt so fat and unattractive. |

I think what Mel said about getting a second opinion from another doctor might be the way to go also.
I was more focussing on the fact you had stopped your anti depressant medication, and I was worried you were going to be rail roaded into something while not having a clear frame of mind.
there are other options for you if you can't have the band.
so don't panic yet.

| mini......so sorry you are going through this. I agree with the other posters...give yourself some time to recover and then reevaluate. Who knows, but you will make the best decision for yourself. Thought about switching surgeons? There is a doctor at the facility that I had my surgery that I won't see, no matter what. It's not my surgeon, but they have other docs there that do fills. After he had very bad bed side manner and didn't care that the sip of water didn't go down, and just wanted the nurse to bring him lunch...ya, I won't see him again! |

hey guys.. havent been around in a while but found out that my Dr has decided my band simply isnt working.
I have 10 mil in band ( since op in July) and i have no restriction. None. I have had a gastroscopy, and barrium meal and today a cat scan. Other than confirming i dont have restriction, and i dont have a slip, they havent helped.
To top it off my Dr is one of the original LB doctors and says- i have never seen it just not work before.
Greeat. The next step is to book in for op to just 'have a look'. Dr is guessing that the band might have come unlocked.
Trying to keep the faith that it will get fixed. In the mean time dieting like crazy! 20 kg down since june so i cant complain too much!
Has anyone heard of this happening befor??? |

Please don't stop your anti depressant medication without the knowledge of your treating doctor. these things shouldn't be stopped abruptly.
You have still lost 18 kilos which is great, don't detract from that it's still better than putting it on.
also I don't want the sleevers getting up me but I don't think its a good idea to make any decision about further surgery until you are well healed and thinking straight so you can make an informed decision.
whatever WLS surgery people take they all come with risks.
I met with some people today and 2 of them had sleeves, and both are very unhappy with their results.
so you need to be clear and in a good frame of mind to make a decision, time and your surgeon and friends will help.
I hope that helps some what, I just don't think right now is the best time to decide on anything, especially something so permanent. May be when you are well, it may be just what you need, but at least you will have a clear mind. Sleep on it for a while. perhaps try something else in the mean time Hypnotherpay. accupuncture.whatever.
all the best Mary x |

| And... if you feel that your surgeon is now not the right one for you... you can change. That is your choice. |

Minime... dont give up!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
It will be ok. What you now have to do is try as hard as you can to maintain the loss that you have had. You need to make an appointment with your surgeon and get down to brass tacks and sort this out.
Maybe a band is not for you. Maybe you need to discuss with your surgeon your options and what choices you can make for yourself.
Ultimately however, it is your choice. If you are not keen on the band there are a few other options for you and you need to decide which way you want to go.
There are a few sleevers around, and a few bypassers as well... ask their advise.

| Don't give up Minimeeepc. Give yourself a break and think about what is best for you. Maybe a sleeve is a viable option. Those that have had this operation report excellent outcomes. Just for now you need time to heal and recover. Warm wishes for a better day tomorrow. Mack |

well, feeling pretty disappointed in myself today, I went to see the surgeon for my followup. Turned out I had a really bad slippage and the band had to come out anyway, regardless of whether I wanted it to. He also said that my weight loss was not huge and that perhaps the band was not a success for me. Pretty sad that I had spent all that money . He will put a new one in when I am ready perhaps in 4-6 months, but I wonder if its worth it. I spent 10 months unhappy with the whole thing, although I did end up losing 18kg...most of it was when I was not eating due to blockages. 7kg before the op on optifast, and 5kg the week the band was blocked then subsequently removed. I woke up the morning after the band removal with a new sense of enthusiasm for eating right and I even stopped my antidepressant medication, which I am wondering how long I will be able to stay off...fingers crossed forever.
I am very confused right now, I thought the surgeon might have been a bit more encouraging, or supportive, but it was pretty much "oh well looks like it didnt work, think about bypass"..not really interested in permanent things like bypass or sleeve...
Might just go to bed and forget today happened.
night all. |

Thanks all of you who replied. I think I will call tomorrow and ask, like Gerry suggested. I was just hoping that it would loosen since it's been 2 weeks.
I have lost 10lb since the fill. I would be happy with 10 a month, so ya, I could stand to get some out and slow down. I've lost a total of 65 since surgery date (4 1/2 months). I should slow down and maybe enjoy some food again. |

hey col and Rkfhop,
i couldnt agree more, i find that if i have aten far to fast up it comes if i take my time i actaully enjoy it more as i dont have the stress of pbing and actaully get more down , if i have suffered pbing i will go back to fluids at least for the next meal to settle it back down , gotta love the band certainly has a mind of its own at times!!

| Hi Rkfhop....Also look at the speed you are eating. We tend to speed up again when we get more confident with the band so slow right down ..take 20 mins to eat your meal at least and it may settle.Sometimes we get swelling at the band site from pb'ing so it takes a little time to re-settle....Col |

Hi rkfhop2,
Give the doc a ring this morning, it sounds like you are too tight, you should be able to eat fairly normally, so if you are only able to eat soft or mushy things you'll be in the red zone and will need some fill out.
My hubby tried to ignore the burning sensation and the PBing for a fortnight and got a wrap over the knuckles from doc when we went to see him, but when I listened to the doc explaining I too realised that my band was also too tight.
He explained that you should be able to eat almost anyting you want as long as it's only a half a cup full at each meal time.
Don't feel disheartened at the thought of having some fill out as we found out that being too tight also meant we didn't loose any weight and my hubby weirdly had put on weight.
Hope this helps with your ?.
Best wishes,
Gerry |

Question:
I have been banded 4 1/2 months, been doing well, but this fill, 2 weeks ago has given me grief. First, it was just tight. Just the last couple of days I have been able to eat anything other than soup and Optifast. I haven't been throwing up, maybe twice over the last 2 weeks. Starting yesterday, it feels like heartburn. Not true heartburn, but just enough burning to make me not want to eat anything. I tried some baked beans and it burned. What has been your experience with the feeling of heartburn? No burping or anything. Can I take regular ole Tums? Is that a good solution? Or is that just going to mask the true problem? It seems like when I conquer one problem, there's another. Not that I regret the decision AT ALL. Just a little frustrated today.
Thanks, |

Nearly 3 and a half years banded here. I have been on the board for 4 years, have had several ID changes in that time though.
There is a lady who has been baned 7 years who posts from time to time. I don't think I have seen anyone here banded longer. |

Jodine,
It really depends on what you class as a long timer. I've been banded since 2007, but been on this board since it started. Mel has been around just as long, Leanne and Julie as well. Anna, has been banded a while now as well. I'm sure there are others too.
Some of the founding members still pop in from time to time.
