CMG,

As long as you go in prepared for the worst but expecting the best I believe anything in between is a good outcome!

I agree that reading problem after problem can be daunting, but you will also see that a lot of the problems are only temporary or can be easily fixed, very few are major problems and even those the doctors don't bat an eyelid to most of the time.

Being obese with the inherent risks and problems that come with it far outweigh anything I have read on these boards.

thanks Pyretta, you are such a positive person, I really enjoy listening to your advice; it can be quite daunting when you read and hear what went wrong and courage tends to diminish quite quickly so thank you for your words of wisdom and encouragement, I hope I can be just as positive as you. CMG

Me,

and try and ask some questions in some of the threads for your area..someone there might be able to give you the names of a couple of surgeons.

Best of luck

Re:General Chat #4 Reply to this message
Me,

the fastest route that i'm aware of is to get a referral to a surgeon you are interested in and go to see him/her privately for an initial consult. Enquire as to the type of surgery you would like and they should be able to advise you on a wait time or even a date. You will most likely pay around $150 to $200 for the consult and get maybe half back from medicare, but at least you will be on a list with a more accurate wait list time or even a scheduled date for surgery.

Best of luck, which state are you in by the way?

Re:General Chat #4 Reply to this message
Thanks for that,

I have made an appointment with my GP for Wednesday and I am going to TELL her to send of referals to the 3 public hospitals that either do, do them or are going to start doing them and see where that gets me. I do have a freind that lives on the 'right' side of town for one of the hospitals so if need be I will use her address I am sure she will not mind in the least.

There is a light at the end of the tunnel and sooner or later it will turn out not be a train after all!

Re:General Chat #4 Reply to this message
me,

What state are you in?

Never ever give up hope, there is always new research that the pollies are looking at showing the benefits of banding.

Petition you local federal and sate ministers as well as the federal sate minister for health. Write to them, plead your case and see if they can intervene on your behalf. If you are strong enough go to the media. shows like ACA and Today tonight like to take on causes and can sometimes open doors that we lay people can't.

Hang in there.

Re:General Chat #4 Reply to this message
This is so frustrating I just dont have the funds to get this surgery done. I have been poring over these boards trying to see if it can be done as a public patient. Just when it looks hopefull it all comes apart at the seams.

There is one flicker of hope that one of the hospitals might be starting a list in the new year but I dont know if they will accept me because of where I live.

It is so emotionally draining I am ready to just give the hole thing up.

Ellee,

I know of a few bandits that have been scuba diving without any issue at all.

Enjoy your time under the water.

Re:General Chat #4 Reply to this message
nuts,

The excessive mucous is just the body's way of trying to force through the food it felt was stuck. With less fill in the band and chewing the food properly you shouldn't have the mucous build up when you have the smaller amount of fill put back in.

Re:General Chat #4 Reply to this message
oceanfors45,

I was reading lap band support boards and groups for nearly 3 years while i waited to be banded under the public system and I was glad to be able to realize it was rarely a dream run for anyone. Learning about things that can go wrong just made me feel better prepared, and I'm so glad I was because my banding journey has been far from a dream run, but I have seen the benefits of banding and will perserveer with it until I get it right.

Re:General Chat #4 Reply to this message
Hi, Need some advice. I was banded back in 2003 with the bio band (4.5 to 5 mls max), lost 40 kilos, put most of it back on again. July this year I had my gallbladder out and the new surgeon replaced the port which was pitted with holes, hence the band not working. I finally had 2mls of fill Monday week ago and since then lost 5 kilos. Problem is no eating and hardly any fluids. I'd take a sip of fluids then have to wait half an hour for it to go down. I'm asthmatic, dont have a cold but an enormous amount of mucus buildup. Even if I shifted it some how I was still too tight. Tuesday I had it all taken out again. Next Friday I'll have 1 ml put in. How do I get rid of this excessive mucus. Does anyone else have the same problem.

Hi all, glad to hear everyone is in a good mood being Friday and all. Find it very interesting reading your blogs and have a question for you all: did any of you read the bad stuff that happens with lap banding and how did that affect your decision to go ahead with the surgery? Did you delay, did you go in regardless; I know this is a big step in my life and don't want to botch it up. Thanks all. have a great weekend. CMG

Re:General Chat #4 Reply to this message
Hi Col,

You have just described it exactly!! The thick clear stuff surrounds my food..... I am worried that i will never be able to eat again.....I just tried some yoghurt and could only manage 3 teaspoons..then I felt that uncomfortable feeling and the clear stuff came up to give some relief. Even water is like this.... I will try the warm drink and see what happens. Cheers, Bandsta.

Re:General Chat #4 Reply to this message
he he hee...sorry I am less than lady like sometimes

Seriously though I found the best releif was from taking some lactulose, clearing the bowel and letting the wind out. Until I took the laxative...( lactulose works within a few hours) the back log of constipation caused from all the pain killers and meds that is pumped into you from the op blocks the passage of exiting wind.

Once you get out the 'brick' so to speak the bugal calls from the nether regions will deflate your distended belly.

This of course is just what worked for me and very quickly I might add ...prior to that I looked like a balloon filled to bursting.

Degas chewable tablets will help, as will a heatpack and some movement. Peppermint tea is supposed to be good too.

I have just had my Lap Banding done (2 days ago)and I was wondering if there is anything you take to get the wind out of the stomach. My tummy looks like I am 9 months pregnant.
Can we take over the counter medications?
