Re:Changing Formula Reply to this message
Hi.

Wondered if you had any advice for me. My son is 12 weeks old and has been diagnosed with a cow's milk allergy (don't know if it's the proteins or the lactose). He's been on neocate for a month now and he still has constant stomach cramps to the point of not being able to sleep in the day and crying for almost the whole day because he's so tired. What's the deal with the proteins in the cows/goats milk? Do you think it's worth me giving goats milk a try? We've been on about 5 diff formulas so far so don't want to mess his little gut up any more than it is already... Any advice would be gratefully received as I'm at my wits end! Thanks.

Hi I found a brillant product called COlic Calm it assisted with colic reflux and upset tummy. Absolutely Devine. I had tryed alot of other natural products and nothing worked. It is a homeopathic product if you google colic calm you will be able to see testimonials. All the best. My baby girl loved it.

Re:Changing Formula Reply to this message
hi,
I have a 5 month old baby that I've been breastfeeding. I'm not supplying enough milk for him and I've been thinking of substituting a few meals with goats milk. I was curious to what you were using. Is raw goats milk better than store bought goats milk, or do you dilute it. Any information you can give me will be very helpful. Thank you so much Hilary

Re:Changing Formula Reply to this message
er...i hate to say it, but babies HATE being put down by themselves. It will take a while for her stomach to adjust to the formula. It's thicker than people milk and it's this first time she's had lactose without lactase in her diet. It'll just take a while of being really gentle with the feeds, and DON'T put a baby horizontal while they're working hard to digest food. For a while, your little baby will need your help to digest food, or she could vomit and choke (and maybe die) and will have wind building up to the point of extreme pain (for up to an hour after each bottle feed) which affects her heart rate. Enough for doctors to want to keep her on monitors in ICU if you took her to a doctor who discovered this. Her poos will be becoming more solid now, too. Therefore scarier for her and more painful than she's used to. Cuddle her through them. In other words, parent your baby as though she is a small baby. At least you know she has good reflexes. If she doesn't improve with age, switch to lactose-free cows formula. It'll taste different, but you'll see the difference after the first bottle. You probably should do this ASAP, as least for a while. A one month old is very different to a 4 month old.

Re:Changing Formula Reply to this message
when can you start introducing cooled boiled water to babies for thirst, I know not before a feed, but isn't a good option if the baby doesn't settle and it's a couple of hours before feed time?

Thanks in advance.

Re:Changing Formula Reply to this message
hi there,

just been reading your post - my little girl has developed colic like symptoms in the last week or so - she is 4.5 weeks old and i have been supplementing her breast feeds with formula - nan ha gold. she has not been passing poos and screams in the afternoons when i try to put her down - she is inconsolable and really screams and seems in pain and tenses up her whole body. i am on my own and i must be honest and say i am struggling with this behaviour! i feel dreadful that i cant console her or help her pain and then guilty as i feel like screaming and crying myself these days and need to put her down for a while so that i dont get frustrated. i am sure it is colic and want to change to the goats milk and also look at my diet.

are you still having good results with the goats formula? and has the colic cleared up now? i heard that goats formula is not as good nutrition wise but i suspect that is the dairy industry trying to put us all off.

hope it is working out for you!

Re:Changing Formula Reply to this message
I have three sons and all 3 have had problems with reflux and been intolerent to the proteins in milk. the first 2 were put on noecate which worked wonders. But my recent child who is now 12 weeks didn't take well to most formulas including soy and neocate. my last resort was goats milk and he is now fantastic. Goats milk does have less lactose smaller proteins and my health nurse told me it has one less protein than cows milk this is why alot of babies do well on it. I would recommend it to anyone. The goats milk constipates him a little which is a bit of a problem but other than that he is great!!

Re:Changing Formula Reply to this message
im about to try goats milk too, as my son is now 18 weeks but the first 12 weeks he screamed constantly on breast milk and then formula, until i got him on Novolac(lactose reduced) how ever he still isnt content and crys alot and is constipated half the time. His father apparently was on goats milk and did really well. im off to try it today as i believe the large protein in a bovine animal(cow) has seven stomaches to digest it and our little tackers have a small inmature one...common sense prevails and atiny little goat is more their size...

Re:Changing Formula Reply to this message
Big difference between goat's milk & regular dairy, especially if the child is sensitive to cassein (a heads-up here, not always but commonly there will also be a sensitivity to gluten). Unless someone is allergic to goat milk (rare) it is a much healthier choice for most than cow milk. No-one wants to tell us this as the dairy industry is so huge here. (whisper - Sheep cheese is also good.)
Very glad baby is feeling better & Mum is getting some rest!!

My son is still sleeping through the night and I have noticed his temperament has changed too there was definitley something bothering him with the other formula. My maternal nurse says there is less lactose in goat milk maybe that has helped??

Re:Changing Formula Reply to this message
Ig goat's milk works for you it is fine BUT as any Health Professional will tell you goat's milk and cows milk formulas are almost identical.Unless you have just changed to a cow's milk formula why would this suddenly cause your child to night wake?? Are new teeth coming? There are many reasons for night waking and many easy, successful ways of treating it.Good luck to you but I think you will find the goats milk formula is a bandaid solution!

Re:Changing Formula Reply to this message
My 9 month old son woke about 15 times during the night we were told to go to "Sleep School" but I felt that there was something wrong. I took him to a chiropractor who suggested Goat Milk formula. I tried it last night to an amazing full nights sleep! I can't believe the change; we have a new son who sleeps.

Re:Changing Formula Reply to this message
My son was a very bad reflux baby, I promise you the formula was making him alot worse and we tried every brand and type. Finally we went back to brestfeeding and it got better but the real break came whem we started solids (ice cereal) at 5 months. Not a single puke since. He is now 8 months. Puking babies do really well when the solids kick in. I highly recommend it.

Re:Changing Formula Reply to this message
I ma first time mum too and my baby girl was exactly the same. She would spit up constantly, was constipated and would scream with stomach cramps and wind for hours, usually starting around 5pm. My gp said to try the karicare AR as its thicker and should stay down easier. She then went on to Karicare HA/AR. This stopped the spitting up but not the wind or cramps. I asked for a referal to a paediatrician who put her on Karicare Lactose Free which i found hard to get. He then prescribed S26 LF (lactose Free)which worked wonders. But the spitup started again so i had to add Karicare thickener which is very expensive so i added a little farex to thicken each bottle instead. Not only did this lessen her spit ups, but she was alot more content and easier to settle and she slept longer through the night as the farex gave her a more substantial feed. Her paediatrician assured me that the spitting up is very common and is more a nuisance than a health issue and to persevere. By four months she was perfect and had started taking solids!

Re:Changing Formula Reply to this message
WIC will offer many types of formula all made by the same manufacturer. Similac has a formula called Allimentumn. This is made especially for colic babies. WIC will pay for this, just ask. They also can give you a chart of the measurments to use when switching formula. It will be mixing the two until eveentually you are completely switched over. i had the same issues with my son. Good Luck!

Re:Changing Formula Reply to this message
my youngest was lactose intolerent and suffered bad reflux to the point of holding her breath and projectile vomiting that literally amazed people on how far away from her she vomited. I was prescribed a medicine to stop the vomiting and baby zantac syrup that worked immediately. She never looked back. I was also told after 3 months many babies recover from being lactose intolerent and try a formula with lactose which I did and have never had any more problems. Soy formula is very light in the belly and sometimes needs something added to give them a bit more in the stomach. I only ever used Karicare with both my children and found it fantastic.

dont worry about spending money on a special matress when used a stack of cloth nappies and elevated one end of the cot matress and it worked for our daughter.

Re:Changing Formula Reply to this message
my son has always been on the similac advance. however, i thought switching him to the isomil would help with fussiness and spitting up. I talked to our nurse and she said she wouldn't change formula, but I could if I wanted to. then I talked to a friend and she recommended changing after seeing him spit up. to say the least- i should have listened to the doctor. my poor son had one 4 oz bottle of the soy based formula and has thrown up after the next three feedings. I was totally wrong in not listening to the doctor!

Re:Changing Formula Reply to this message
Hi there
With regards to the mattress, I have no idea. However, with regards to colic, I had my son 6 wks prem, he screamed for 4 months on different formulas, including prescription, we tried all the you could think of turns out, what can be diagnosed as lactose intolerant, can in fact be protein intolerance. As such cows milk, and soy milk have the same proteins, some of the hydrolised and prescription formulas claim to overcome this, but we had no luck.
I did some research on goats milk becuase of something to do with the different types of protein, my son drank over 200mls his first feed on it and slept the whole night. We have never looked back.
Worth a try, but important to remember when changing formulas it takes well over 48-72hrs for the old one toget out of their system.
See how you go.
