Re:Smoker Mom Reply to this message
Smoking when your pregnant is WRONG, there are over 4000 chemicals in ONE cigarette. I smoked for 17 years and it is the biggest regret of my life that I did. I am glad to say I stopped before I got pregnant. I think any mother who smokes or drinks when pregnant is been cruel to their unborn baby. Check out the Quit smoking website there's lots of lovely facts on there about how horrible smoking is. Or, why not try a visit to your local hospital and see the cancer/emphysema patients ward?

Hypnosis was my cure, it was easy, walked in a smoker and an hour later walked out a non-smoker.

working while pregnant dangerous and damaging. Therefore abuse and selfish and putting own needs ahead of baby. Living on busy street or in smog area dangerous and damaging. Therefore abuse and selfish and putting own needs ahead of baby. Not eating right and feeding packaged baby food dangerous and damaging. Therefore abuse. Oh, but only smoking dangerous. Yeah. Right. Oh, using products with sodium laureth sulphate causes liver cancer. Humectants are actually industrial chemicals, but are cheap, and highly carcinogenic. So that is abuse. And causes dermatitis and probably asthma and cancer. But that makes you a good parent. But sorry, once again, only smoking bad.

Re:Smoker Mom Reply to this message
IMO...any parent who smokes in front of their babies/children, knowing very well it isn't good for them, is committing a form of child abuse. It is proven that smoke affects a baby, whether it's in the womb or being held by the smoking parent, or in the same home with a smoking parent. It is very selfish for parents to continue smoking in the presence of their children and they are putting their own needs ahead of their children.
A parent who claims they smoked during their pregnancy and says their children turned out fine, have just been very lucky so far that they haven't seen the damage they have already done to their children. If you haven't seen it now, you will at some point in their lives.

Second-hand smokes causes many problems to people who choose not to smoke. At least adults can remove themselves from most second-hand smoke...most children are stuck being affected by it without any choice.

Think of your children people! If you won't quit for yourselves, at least quit for them.

Re:Smoker Mom Reply to this message
yes, yes, i see you've read all the widely publicized literature, but there is still a lot you don't understand. Nicotine is highly addictive. The stress it places on an unborn baby, especially just as the mother is finding out she's pregnant (21days old embryo) the heartbeat of the baby kicks in. Any stress around this time could kill him/her. And the doctors write it off as a blighted ovum. Not a miscarriage even. This happens to a quarter of all pregnancies. If the baby was concieved in a smoking mother, it will be quite dependent on it, and may even thrive, as nicotine has been shown to be beneficial in several aspects of nervous system and brain. Later on, when the babie's lungs are developing, even then, they don't breathe in smoke. Yes, they get the chemicals and it would be good to cut down. All the risks you are talking about seem quite major, but a mother who works full time up until about 36 weeks is facing exactly the same risks. As for SIDS, controlled crying is a known contributing factor into making it happen, but no-one says anything about that - do they. A baby left alone in a cot in a room by itself goes into a deeper sleep than their supposed to and some even die while others just get sleep apnoea until they grow out of it. If they're lonely and upset th A heater left on in a room could overheat the baby and cause dehydration which could kill babies. But if there's no heater in a baby's room, you're labeled as an uncaring mother. If you smoke more than 10 cigarettes a day before the birth, the sudden withdrawls from nicotine need morphine to treat the baby. That's how bad the stress is for a fully-grown baby at term. Imagine how that would feel and what it would do to a developing baby in utero. Even doctors admit this if you ask them. The only precaution you need to take is to make sure the baby gets enough oxygen. By breathing deeply and walking. Anyway, living on a busy street is as bad or worse than smoking for a baby. And yes - that IS a fact

Re:Smoker Mom Reply to this message
I'm not writing this in judgement of Mum's who do smoke, I'm only writng this with concern to the children of those Mum's who smoke.

You may not think that, smoking while pregnant is hurting your unborn baby or that smoking around your babies and or children is hurting them, BUT please know that IT IS hurting them more than you will ever know!

For one thing, you are putting poison into your body every time you take a drag of your smoke, the amount of chemicals that go into a smoke should be enough to make anyone want to give up smoking on the spot.

Anyway, while you are pregnant, not only are you putting poison into your body BUT you are ALSO putting poison into your unborn baby's body too. Is that a great way to start your baby's life, already poisoned before he/she is born. Please think about that one for a minute!

Secondly, If you smoke around your newborn baby or even if you have got the smell of smoke on your clothes or breath, you increase the chances of SIDS much much higher.

Thirdly, If you smoke around your children, they then breath in your second hand smoke and can end up being very sick from it and it could increase their chances of the likes of different forms of cancer later on in their life.

So, after reading this I ask you, Is it really worth it, smoking around the one's you love, the one's you gave birth to, the one's you want to see grow up and have a good and healthy life?

Please think more about the health of your children, they are your most loved one's in this world, aren't they?!

Re:Smoker Mom Reply to this message
i know how you feel. i try not to let anyone near my baby if they are smoking. it is hard in public areas, but at least it is outside and i can move if need be. it is hard to put your opinions on others, the only thing you can do is make sure smokers are not around you when pregnant and after baby is born. we can only look after our own babies and feel sorry for those we cannot.
