The Child is suffering from a condition called reflux.
The smell is undigested food mixed with gastric acid.
it helps to cut back on the quantity of food per meal but more meals over the course of the day. Experiment with the foods keeping to just 1 variety per meal. You will soon find out which ones will stay down & what wont.
The child prefers to sit up as this stops the burning sensation in the diaphram but is not good for their soft spine |

| Even without a full on allergy the formula could still be the problem. It could be a lactose intollerance or reflux. If it started after solids it might be time to take a step back and look at the solids being eaten. (for breast fed babies take a look at your own diet) Over feeding is one of course and the excess is coming back. Babies will comfort eat to settle an upset tummy. My elder two spat up and they had dairy allergys which they outgrew (and soy, so if you switch to soy formula be prepared....that stuff really stinks when it comes back up) |

| easy for you to say. my twins spit up all the time. they can't nap, are always a mess and smell bad. at least they're cute. it's a big hassle and you can't blame a parent for wanting to solve the problem. obviously, i'm blessed to have a child who is healthy. tell me something i don't know. give me a real solution to my problem. and let me tell you, wearing a towel is not a solution. does anyone have any advice that might actually be helpful? |

I would seek advice from a developmental paeditrician.
My son had seriuous reflex, what follows is glue ear, resulting hearing problems and even worse, as was in my case, a link to a developmental disorder.
I don't want to make you worry (famous last words after what I have written already) but my son has autism and of the 50 plus families I have met and am close to, around 50% all had serious reflux issues as a child.
I would check this out very very carefully and not just accept the standed paed response...your child will grow out of it!

| hi, i have a 21 month old son and for the first 11 months all he did was spit up so i took him to the doctors and they told me it was nothing to worry about and he could have reflux and put him on this medication but i did some reserch and found out that this stuff was filled with alchole and they get hooked on it also babies with reflux are babies that are unhappy and are hard to put up with which wasnt my little boy he was the best baby i could get except for the spitting up so i did some more reserch and found that if i put him on thickened formula it settles ibn the stomache a bit more and made hes solid food a bit thicker it harder for it to make its way up also dont sit them up anywhere straight after a feed as that makes the food come straight back up see how that goes i hope i could help i know how frustrating it was |

my boy never spat up till he was about 6 mnths. Hes 9 mnths now and spits up heaps. I had some tests done andwas told its just reflux. I didnt think they woul just get reflux at an older age but app they do.
Its not to be concerned about just do what i do and walk about with a bowl of water and a cloth. |

If your doctor isn't worried that it is a health problem I wouldn't worry either. Sure it might be a hassle, but there are plenty of parents who can't imagine having a healthy baby. Spitting up isn't a big deal in the grand scheme of things.
Sometimes babies that crawl alot, or sit with their stomachs in 'scrunched' positions will often spit up.
Also, over feeding small children is a suprisingly common cause, especially with formular. Try smaller amounts more often, and feeding a little slower.
As for the mess, try using towels or blankets over your front and shoulders to protect your clothing when you are holding you child. Also there are some great play mats available that are soft, but have a durable and most importantly washable outer cover.
Kids clothes aren't suposed to stay clean, so don't stress!
Good luck xx |

| I am in the same boat. My daughter is 8 months and there are days when I just can't believe it. Of course, the doctor is not worried. I have her on the enfamil formula for babies that spit up but there does not seem to be much improvement. Her cute outfits are covered in stains and my clothes are always in the wash. She is starting to crawl now and we have had to relegate her playspace to our non-carpeted basement area. I'm hesitant to feed her solids because of the incredible staining that comes with the vegetables. She already gets two meals a day and I simply put up with the evening spit up. If I am not watching her like a hawk, she even crawls through it or plays in it. I can't imagine having a baby that doesn't spit up - she would be a dream child!! |

I thought by the time she got to this age it wouldnt happen anymore she sits up all the time, she has been on solids for more then 3 months, i am pretty sure she dosent have a milk allergy as she is very happy all the time, no upset stomach it seems...any suggestions? thanks |
