Hi there,
I was banded on Friday August 15th, and am recovering well except for this F##kin lef shoulder and neck pain. NOTHING seemes to relieve it and it keeps me up at night. How long should I expect this pain to last?
Also, I am having pain everytime I change positions or swallow and it feels like it's burning in my chest and I have to burp. Has anyone experienced this?
Starting to regret this....
thanks,
EE |

dump,
It can either be referred pain from the vegus nerve or some of the gas they use to blow up your stomach is still trapped and trying to find a way out.
I would think at 4 weeks it's still some residual gas. It will eventually go, but walking will help ease it.

anesthesiagirl,
What you are feeling is very common. Some people find great relief from heat packs on the shoulder area. Others find walking and trying to shift the wind also helps. Very few find lying completely flat can also alleviate some of the pain.
It truly is an individual experience but I hope some of these suggestions can help.
Try asking for more tips on the Lap band board. There are heaps of people who have experienced the same thing. The link is about 2 posts below yours.
I wish you well.

| Hi, I had the Lap Band done on 8-6-07 in Nashville, TN. Today is 7 days post-op and my left shoulder pain is EXCRUCIATING. I am in the medical field and I did my research on my surgeon and I fully trust in his skills. However, the onlyreason I have had to take pain meds is for this shoulder pain. My pain is so severe and constant that I am haveing trouble moving from bed. I can even differentiate my pain when it is above the band gas (left neck pain to shoulder top) below the band gas (left clavicle and outer shoulder). I still can't find relief? Even immobility doesn't help it is stabbing pain. |

| I just had the Lap-Band procedure 10 days ago and I am having problems with pain in my left shoulder and this kind of uncomfortable aching like something is stuck in my throat, or lower and I can't move it. This has happened today and after three hours I'm still afraid to drink because it hasn't lessened. All I did was have about a cup of chicken broth and there it was. If you get any answers let me know. Stuck in Michigan |

Hello Wazza,
I have had some trouble with my band along the way. I was unlucky enough to have two slippages and eventually had a third band put in - this last one was a soft band called a Swedish Band. It has been great. My experience has not been ideal along the way with bouts of gastritis etc but I do not regret having the op at all. i have lost about 30kg so far. i am at a stalemate at the moment and the only thing that will shift that is exercise. if you are not careful and don't exercise your weight loss with be like mine - very very slow. Your body can get used to the small input of food and the little bits of naughty food that you will be tempted to have and you can put on weight even with the band insitu. having said that - it is the hardest thing to get off your butt and do exercise when you already feel uncomfortable. I am tempted to think that therein lays the root of my initial problem!!
any comments?

Hello,
I had my surgery in 2002ish too. I occasionally get shoulder tip pain which is quite painful and unrelieved by anything. In fact, I have it as I am writing. Mine happens mostly in the evening and after a larger meal. I still have some pain the next morning too. I have tried to find some info on this phenomenon. Unable to find anything.

Hi Wazza
I have only 7 more sleeps til my op but I can tell you about the shoulder pain you can get.The pain some people experience is called shoulder tip pain. It's caused from the gas used to swell the abdomen so the Doctor can see what he is doing during the surgery, after the surgery is completed the Doctor lets out the gas via the ports (small incisions made for the insertion of instruments) however some small amounts of gas can get trapped in the abdomen. It's this small amount of gas that causes the pain, sometimes it can be felt in the neck too.
Not all people experience it either. The gas will eventually escape from the body in it's own way, so don't be too concerned about it. De gas tablets can be useful for pain relief experienced by the gas and also helps with gas that gets caught in the stomach after banding. De gas tablets are readily available from your local chemist.
Hope this helps
Jo

hi,
i had my surgery in 2002...i have had shoulder pain off and on, but in the last few months, it's become increasingly more uncomfortable. it comes on really strong, and is painful enough to make me wince...i know i notice it more if i'd had a carbonated beverage, but i haven't had any lately, and i'm still experiencing the pain. like some other postings i've read, it happens more in the evening.
i'm wondering if anyone has information on scientific data for why this pheonomanon occurs... |

| Hi, I googled because I have been having horrific shoulder pain for about 3 days. I had lap band surgery in Sept/06 and some left shoulder pain then. Didn't really get it again except when I overate (rarely) until now. The pain started on Friday after I started taking an antibiotic for a ear infection. However it also correlates with the fact I've been eating too much the last few days and haven't been hungry at all. Is this the cause or is it antibiotics, thanks April |

Robert,
I have shoulder pain, STILL, and my surgery was done on 11-01-05. It happens at anytime; however, I have discovered that the horrific pain comes only after I've eaten and or drank a large quantity (larger than my normal portion). It also usually happens late in the day/evening which is when I can tolerate eating more. Do you know of anywhere I can read any scientific research on why this happens?

| I had lap band surgery over a year ago but still experience some resudual pain in my shoulder right after I eat. I also get a pain in the upper right of my back as if someone is pressing really hard on it. My doctor says it's normal but I can't find anyone else whohas had it. Anyone have more information? |

I am 3 weeks out from Lap band surgery and have continued to have left shoulder and neck pain, and also some discomfort on my diaphragm on the left. When I went in for my 2 weeks check up my doctor seemed surprised, and didnt seem to know about the 4-5 month pain discussed on this board in the response to you by Robert from Melbourne. At least now I won't panic unless it goes past 5 months. It hurts worse when I am sitting up or leaning forward. I think it is pressure on my diaphragm. I guess I will keep taking Advil Gel caps and hope for the best
Good luck to you

Yes, I can advise you.
The pain you are feeling is the band which comes in contact with the diaphragm (the part that divides the upper chest from lower). Following surgery the area will become 'inflamed' and will settle down after a period of time.
This is QUITE COMMON and the pain will leave you after approx. 4-5 months. If it does not - consult your doctor or surgeon as soon as possible.
Did the surgeon tell you about this prior to the operation?
Regards
Robert

Hi,
About 4 weeks ago I had my band moved as it was up too high. Everything was good, my recovery was really fast and I was able to progress slowly to solid foods after the 2 week liquid phase. However I've been experiencing severe shoulder pain on my left hand side since Friday and haven't been able to get rid of it. I did have an adjustment on Wednesday but was fine until Friday morning, I've tried de-gas, walking and panadol, any sugestions? |
