Re:Metformin for Weight loss Reply to this message
Hi everyone, I have also just read all your posts about Metformin, I too have suffered a long time with weight problems since i was a teenager. I developed pcos after i had my twin boys and my weight ballooned from their and just continued to rise constantly. I was given the Metformin to help with the pcos and the insulin resistance and have been back and forth trying all sorts of things. about 2 years ago My doctor mentioned Lap band surgery but i plainly refused this option and so he tried me on another weight supressent prescribtion. This worked great for me it was a very slow process but i managed to lose a few kilos over the past 8 months. The only issue i found was it was costing me huge amounts of money and because i also suffer from high blood pressure the visits to the chemist were getting very expensive. I have in the past 6 weeks found a great new weight loss method which has improved my health immensly over the past 5 weeks and i have managed to ween my self off the expensive prescribtion medication which was costing me ($105) per month. I still take my Metformin as it helps me alot especially when that monthly burdon comes around, as I suffer with terrible pain if i am not on these. But with taking my Metformin and working on my weighloss goals and the plan I'm on i have lost 5kgs in 5 weeks and 18cm of body fat. I have increased my energy and I am feeling great. My long term goal is to not be so reliant on the prescribtion meds. ( And im taking 1000mg Twice a day)

Re:Metformin for Weight loss Reply to this message
Hi, one thing to remember is that this medication needs to accompany a change in your diet. You realy need to look at what and when you eat. Keep a food diary for a week and remember gradualy introducing excersize. Walk to the shops at the end of the road, keep and refill small bottles of water, don,t go shopping on an empty stomach. What I found interesting was introducing more fruit to my diet and keeping a fresh stash at work labled in a seal bag. I took me nearly 4 months to get sorted and now I don't need to think to hard on what's next as my hunger became less. I try not to get on the scales too often and use the space in my clothes to judge my weight loss. GO FOR IT YOU CAN ONLY TRY.....

Re:Metformin for Weight loss Reply to this message
i think for everybody there will be different reasons why metaformin will work or not work.

also i think you should take into account, what your putting into your mouth. U see i've found myself that just buying bread and only having two peices of it per day does not work for me. What ever they put into the bread makes me crave food all day long?
so i now make my own and i now what goes into it, i keep my sugars at a normal rate, and i'm not craving now, and i take my one metaformin tablet in the afternoon and i'm good for the rest of the day+evening..

Re:Metformin for Weight loss Reply to this message
I have only been taking 1X 500g tablet daily and I build up to three over the next few weeks. I have only been on them one week and I feel like I just dont want to eat. I have lost 2 kg this week. But I must say that I "could" eat...the drugs just seem to be enough for me to have some control...like nicotine patches are for smokers!!!

Re:Metformin for Weight loss Reply to this message
Nick,

I take 500mg metformin twice a day. It doesn't make we loose weight but it does act as an appetite suppressant. I don't want to eat when I take them. It works well for em that way.

Re:Metformin for Weight loss Reply to this message
Hi I know this is an older post, I just wanted to tell you that when my Dr. switched me to the time release pills they stopped working, my body didn't respond to the pills, and they would stay in my system without releasing for some reason. I gained 15 pounds back in two weeks. So I take 2000mg a day of the quick release and it works great for me. I think each of us just has to find what will work for your own body. I have had a regular cycle for the last 4 months, I exercise daily, and usually can only lose one pound a month until I get my cycle, then the day it's over I am 6 pounds lighter, and will stay there minus the extra one pound I will lose until my next cycle and then BAM last day of the cycle another 6 pounds gone overnight. This happened for two months so I watched it close the next two, and yes the same thing happened. Has anyone else had this happen? I know it has everything to do with hormones, but seems so odd to me. I'm hoping I'm regular once again this month, of course I'm hoping for the scale to lose another 6 pounds as well.

Re:Metformin for Weight loss Reply to this message
I have PCOS and was prescribed Metformin when I wanted to fall pregnant to aid in regaining some kind of menstral cycle. (NB: Very tricky to fall pregnant when you only ovulate a couple of times a year!) My doctor said once I fell pregnant/had a baby, I wouldn't need metformin anymore, but after reading your comments, even though we have finished having babies, I think I might give it a go for weight loss reasons. Thank you!

Re:Metformin for Weight loss Reply to this message
Just an update. It has been 20 weeks and ive lost 23 kgs, In november, the pharmacist convinced me to try formet- a generic form of the drug. As he was quite insistent (ive since learned they make commissions on suggesting these drugs)I went with the formet. I didnt have amy of the side effects (some diarrhea, loss of appetite, loss of carb cravings) and only managed to lose just under 4 kgs the following month. (Taking into consideration xmas- where i was away on hols and not watching my diet also ran out of prescription for a week i regained about 2 kgs.)
Ive since gone back to diaformin on Monday and have lost 2.3 kgs since then.

Re:Metformin for Weight loss Reply to this message
Hello everyone,

I am on Metformin for my Poly-Cystic Ovarian Syndrome and Insulin Resistance. I can testify to the fact that if you stop taking Metformin after losing all of your excess weight you will slowly but steadily put it all back on!
Back in 2002, I dropped about 28kgs with the Sureslim program and by taking my Metformin regularly, I maintained my weight for a few years, and then for some reason, I thought I didn't need the Metformin anymore, as I thought my body was cured. I still wanted to lose a few more kilos and couldnt figure out why my diet wasn't working anymore and I was just maintaining my weight.

I began to also increase my carbohydrate intake, and slowly but surely, every month my weight was going up, and despite diet after diet and pill after pill nothing was working.

FINALLY a year ago, my doctor asked me how I was going with my Metformin, and I told him I don't take it anymore. He said "Do you realise that you need to take this for the rest of your life, and that THIS is why you have regained all of your weight?" He instructed me to take it again. NOW, I am back to the Sureslim program taking Metformin regularly, and I am FINALLY losing weight.

It really is the key for those of us who have trouble assimilating carbohydrates as energy in our bodies (Insulin Resistance).

Re:Metformin for Weight loss Reply to this message
Hi:-) Thanks for your response!

Im glad to hear of someone else succeeding on met also!

When i was first prescribed metformin, I asked my dr what would happen if i ceased using the drug after i have lost weight. She replied I would need to be on it forever or I would regain weight.

Im on 1000 mg 3 x a day. I hope to go on the slow release 1 x per day once i have lost the weight. My dr mentioned the slow release did not provide as good results taking met 3 x per day.

Definitely try another dr!

Re:Metformin for Weight loss Reply to this message
Hi,
I read your comments about metformin and weight loss with interest.
My story is similar in some respects. I gained over 25 Kgs following the births of my children and nothing seemed to shift it. I started following a very low carb diet and using Xenical if necessary. I did lose several kilos and then it stopped and I started gaining again despite my food intake and type being constant and walking fast for 3/4 to an hour each day.
My Doctor presribed Metformin after my GTT showed a strong level of insulin resistance.
I continued with the low carbs and the walking and the weight jsut dropped off. I lost it all over a few months and kept it off for a couple of years.
Then I stopped the Metformin, continued with the diet and exercise and gradually I have regained 15 Kgs.
It's so depressing but my new Doctor wont give me Metformin even though I've explained my previous results.
What doseage are you on? I think I will change Doctors and try again. It's not good physically or emotionally for me to remain this weight. Plus it will continue to rise.
I felt so much more positve when I read your comments
and success story. It's given me the impetus to try again to get a prescription.
Thank you

Metformin for Weight loss Reply to this message
A bit of background-
Ive had problem with my weight since puberty and have managed to gain and lose the same 50kgs 3 times. The last time i gained, i decided enough was enough and had a sleeve gastrectomy done in jan 06. I fell pregnant in May 06 and although i had lost 14 kgs, plus 6 kgs during the pregnancy, after I gave birth my appetite returned very quickly (during pregnancy i had no sweet cravings at all and was easily satiated. i also had back surgery at 30 wks so food was not really a priority)between jan 07 and June 08 I steadily regained 14 kgs even though i ate about half of what i used to pre op.
I saw my dr in feb 08 who mentioned there was new research that shows SOME obese patients who are prescribed metformin (aka diabex, diaformin, glucophage) for pre diabetes and diabetes (met is the most prescribed medication in us.)
experienced weight loss as a welcome side effect.

I did a sugar test in feb, but as my sugar levels were normal my dr didnt feel it appropriate to prescribe the drug.

At a later unrelated consultaion she again mentioned met as a tool for weight loss following good progress of another patient. Newer research suggests the completion of Glucose tolerance test -GTT (fasting test post 3 day high carb diet) to check insulin resistance(IR aka syndrome x)

Following the test it was established that i indeed was insulin resistant (the GTT requires the patient to consume 150g of carbs on each day of the 3 day diet, i gained 3 kgs so clearly my body has issues metabolising carbs)

I was prescribed metformin 9 wks ago and have lost 14 kgs following a low gi diet (max bread 2 slices per day and max 2 pieces of fruit, no high carb/gi veg or fruit, pasta, rice etc- can exchange bread for small serve of above)
I am interested to hear if anyone has been prescribed this drug and their experiences.
this has been a godsend to me and works BETTER than the surgery or any other diet. It is also the easiest by far to follow.
cheers
