awls@yahoogroups.com has quiet a large number of those who have had the sleeve both longer term and more recent. They are a very friendly bunch to ask questions :)

Hi Sarah,
I too think applesauce has explained it quite well. And with what everyone has said there is many other support options you can look at respectively. Here is 2 links to the gastric sleeve and 200kg plus from the lap band board
http://au.messages.yahoo.com/health/lap-band/78892 /
http://au.messages.yahoo.com/health/lap-band/57868 /
Even tho its on the lapbanding board, there are many people there that will help you. I have been banded but a lady I know that I have met on the boards and in person has had the sleeve. Our surgeries were only 3 weeks apart with the same doctor. Her weight loss has been far more dramatic than mine, and the sleeve is set and forget, unlike the band that needs maintenance.
I only suggest to do your research, check those links I have listed and read. It will only help in your decision. I know being almost 30kg less, even from an extreme measure of surgery is the best thing I have ever done! Good luck with your choice in what ever you decide.

Sarah,
I was wondering how much you actually know about the Gastric Sleeve operation? Why did your doctor suggest it and not one of the other surgical options? Do you know what those options are? Have you considered non surgical options?
There are a few groups out there have people that have had the gastric sleeve operation and they can probably explain it better than I can.
Basically a part of your stomach is removed and then what is left is stapled together, those staples are then sewn over so they don't burst. It turns your stomach into something that looks more like a banana than the sack it was.
Recovery takes around 8 weeks and you should then be able to eat food normally, but a lot less of course, only about 150g at a time from what I have heard.
If you need any further information, try joining the yahoo group AWLS http://health.groups.yahoo.com/group/awls/ or Support in Oz http://health.groups.yahoo.com/group/supportinoz/
I wish you all the best.

Food restrictions fills etc are all things associated with lap banding. I pointed you to the lap banding section because it is far more active and you will get a lot more info there as what you have to do pre op and post op are very similar for the few weeks before and after surgery.
Yes they cut out 90% of your stomach leaving a tube, they seal this up with staples for sutures. This is NOT like the old days when they stapled off a section of your stomach. They actually remove 90% of it in the modern surgery. This means you can not eat much, removing that section of your stomach also removes a great deal of a hormone that is responsible for making you hungry. So it works in 2 ways making less room so you feel fuller sooner, and your body doesnt feel as hungry even when not full.
Like all surgery there are risk, the major risk from the sleeve is a leak where they stitch or as I said staple the new stomach together. If this happens it happens in the first few days. Your surgeon will explain all this to you. For most morbidly obese patients the risk that their weight brings are far higher than the risks of surgery. So please do not let me panic you :)
Join the yahoo group awls and introduce yourself and you will find a lot of people who have had the surgery and can talk to you with far more information in a far better manner than I can :)

Applesauce,
Thank you for your information, but I know nothing about lapbanding.
What do you mean by food restriction, does that mean there are things I won't be able to eat? NO fills, needles, I'm sorry I don't understand what any of that means.
All I really know is they cut part of the stomach away so I can't eat much. Are you saying there is more to it? What is this leaking? I thought they just cut it away and then sew it op so it is smaller. Now you are saying staples. I don't want my stomach stapled. I know someone who had that and the staples burst.
I'm sorry for all the questions.

I am due to have this done on the 5th November at Fremantle. If you put your head into the lapband section you will find a couple who have had the sleeve PLUS a link to the yahoo group awls which has a LOT of people who have had this done. The bandits are a nice bunch and do not hurt *LOL* PLUS those on the awls group are very nice and go out of their way to help with lots of info on the sleeve.
From the info I have the recovery time is about the same as the band, and the what you can eat and when for the first 5 weeks is pretty much the same as for the band. It is after this things are different. With the sleeve you have food volume restriction not but not the food type restictions most bandits do. And that the sleeve is set and forget, if problem occur they usally happen in the first few days from a leak in the staple line, if that holds (only 1 in 250 ever leak) then you should not have problem that some with bands can later on. The added bonus of the sleeve is NO fills so no needles, and the fact that there is still debate that bands may need replacing every 10 years.

Hi my name is Sarah. I'm 48 years old and weigh nearly 220kg.
My doctor has suggested I have an operation called a Sleeve Gastrectomy, it's also known as Gastric tube. I have read a little about it and it scares me a bit. I know I have to do something about my weight and surgery seems to be my best option.
I am hoping to find people who have already had this type of surgery so I can ask some questions.
Thank You.
