| Don't worry, most people fall off the Optivomit wagon, I did, as long as you mostly stick to it you'll be fine. Good luck for tomorrow! :-) |

I had an RNY gastric bypass - I don't know much about the BPD, except that you possibly get more diarrhoea and potential for vitamin deficency than the RNY but it's probably more effective? I really don't know I'm just burbling. I think the RNY is more common. I don't get diarrhoea, only a little little bit if I have a very fatty meal, and with regards to vitamins I take a multi and an iron tablet, which I was taking before the surgery so there's no change there. My blood tests always come back 'good' in that I have a healthly level of vitamins, iron etc.
I can drink soft drink no worries. I honestly can eat and drink anything I could before the surgery with no problems other than the potential for dumping or a very VERY little bit of diarrhoea if I have a VERY fatty meal. I don't even think about the fat I'm eating to be honest, which is why I never mentioned it before, it's that small an issue and I eat home made chips and eggs fried in butter with bacon etc. with no problems (not every day of course!). Strictly speaking you're not supposed to drink with a meal as it washes the food out of your stomach and you can theoretically then eat more, but I always do drink with my meals as I get thirsty, and it hasn't been a problem yet. Even with drinking with my meals - I might have 1/2 - 1 can of diet coke with dinner, for example, I can still only eat a small meal and my weight has been stable for over 12 months so I'm not worried at the moment. I might sound as though I don't take this surgery seriously, I actually do, but I need to be able to live with it and feel 'normal', and part of that is not wanting to feel deprived, so I do break some rules. If it becomes a problem - by putting on weight, for example, I'll re-examine my lifestyle and eating habits.
WLS ROCKS!

Adeey,
thanks for the great reply, that was great.
Can I ask a few questions?
can you drink diet softdrink? and once over the initial getting over it period can you drink with a meal, as in have a cup of tea with a meal or toast for example?
I've been told that my surgeon is going to do a biliopancreatic diversion or bpd? Apparently theres two kinds of byass a rouen y and the bpd...do you know which one that you had?
Very grateful to be finding out some more information.
thanks again

The first few months - gosh, what do I say, it seems so long ago now! You would have been told what you can eat and when - the first few weeks just mush and progressing from there. The first six months seemed a long, long time - I missed bread and red meat, but after a few weeks I made a bolognaise sauce out of mince and made sure the mince was very fine by continuing to mash it up. I got some baby pasta from an Italian deli - it's TINY - and it was HEAVEN. You need to be prepared by making up chicken tonight and sticking in in the blender and freezing it in small portions, etc. Baby food is AWFUL and I bought a heap of it but found I couldn't eat it. So try it before you buy it! The hardest time was when I had PMT and had to do the grocery shopping about 3 weeks post-op and I had cravings, I was surrounded by all this food I couldn't eat. You probably went through similar things when you got banded, though. If you follow the rules and don't try to eat what you shouldn't, you're fine. I really can't say that other than the restrictions on what I could eat that I had any problems or issues. You simply have to keep telling yourself that it's not for ever. That's what kept me sane, and, you know what? The time DID pass and I now tuck into a steak or anything else I want to my piggy little heart's delight. Just have the surgery, fear and all, don't back out whatever you do. It CAN be reversed. And no one dies from the surgery here in Australia. Not to play down the risks too much, but you are at nearly as much risk as an obese person on the operating table simply getting your appendix out as having this surgery.
I have found the whole bypass 'thing' - the surgery, the weight loss and the maintenance to have been a lot better and easier than I ever dreamed it would be. Certainly it appears easier to live with than banding but of course it's bigger surgery etc. - I would do it again in a heartbeat. |

| I have lost 60 kilos, am now 67 kilos and have not yet regained any, but my surgeon said I will probably do so within the next few years. I don't work at all to keep that weight off, I eat and drink what I want and don't really exercise. I am very aware though that I may put on weight and I do weigh myself reguarly and am ready to 'diet' again. Having this bypass as a tool it should be a lot easier. There's very little side effects with the bypass as compared to the lap-band, which is one of the reasons I chose the bypass. I can eat and drink ANYTHING with NO trouble (ok, other than the dumping LOL). And I'm not AT ALL unusual. I've never heard of anyone having heartburn, night cough or vomiting with the bypass, and I have been in touch with a lot of people who have had it. Of course the first 6-12 months while your stomach is healing you can't eat a lot of stuff! If you scroll through this message board you'll see a couple of WLS bulletin boards mentioned that are very helpful. Also, maybe your surgeon can put you in touch with a couple of his patients? But of course I don't mind answering questions, I was so grateful to those who answered my questions pre-op that I'm happy to return the favour. I have heard of a few people easily having babies after bypasses and have always read/heard/ thought it was ok? It wasn't an issue for me. Maybe he meant immediately after the bypass. Didn't the singer Carnie Wilson have a couple of babies after hers? |

| I don't mind answering any questions you have, it's a big decision and I know I was quite scared. I have NO regrets AT ALL now though and it's not actually been a big deal other than all the advantages of being skinny LOL With dumping - for me and a lot of people - it can be as mild a bit of yawning and tiredness, generally I get nauseous for about an hour. The severity depends on how much sugar I've had. I have dumped big time only once, and I was very, very nauseous and generally felt really bad for an hour or so. It felt like a lifetime. It was at night time after a meal out about 6 months post-op when I didn't know my limits. If it had been during the day I would have had hubby take me to the doctor, it was that bad. If I hadn't have known it was dumping I would have gone to the hospital. I have dumped to the extent of having to lay down for an hour about four times in 2 1/2 years. I have mildly dumped but still been able to function probably about a dozen times or so. I haven't for a good 6 months though as I know my limits now and it's actually NOT hard work to stay within them. Don't get too worried about it, it's not something I think about much at all now and once you've learnt what sets you off you're fine. |

Adeey1,
thanks so much for that reply, is so hard to find others who have had the bypass.
Do you mind me asking, what happens with dumping? Is it nausea etc and how long does it last?
So want to pick your brains, there's me and another banded patient called Sharon that both want to have a bypass but have had trouble find others that have had it done and can give an account of what it's like after the first year etc.
My biggest worry is after the intial weight loss in the first year, that there is a high incidence of some weight gain after, with an average of a 50% weight loss after 3 years. What is your opinion? I'm concerned with side effects mainly as the band gave me awful heartburn, night cough and vomiting in my sleep, so i'm a bit frightened of being stuck with something similar and having no way to fix it.
Another question is my surgeon said that you can't have pregnancies after having a bypass yet I read in a info booklet that you can after a year. What have you been told?
Sorry to bombard you with questions.
Kind thanks

| Dumping is only supposed to happen after eating sugar. If you have too much fat you get 'the runs' - but you have to have a fair bit of fat for that to happen. It's different for everyone - I can eat a small crunchie and be fine, but if I eat a large one I dump a little bit - and I mean the smallest, littlest bit. I can't eat a MacDonalds Sundae, they are just way too high in sugar for me. I can eat three or four tim tams without being sick, but I don't know exactly how many I could eat because I've had enough by then. I can definitely have several scoops of full fat ice cream or an actual ice cream such as a magnum with no problems at all. I'd be very suprised if you couldn't end up eating a couple of tim tams or an ice cream. Dumping is awful and is a GREAT deterrent, but I don't feel at all deprived, I get more than enough sweet stuff to satisfy me. 2 1/2 years post-op I actually don't want the sweet stuff the same, I'm not as interested in it as I used to be. I know now when to stop before I will dump, cos it is AWFUL. |

I am on a wait list for the bypass, can anyone give me their view on the dumping, my surgeons only mentioned it happening after eating fatty foods, but on the net it said sweets and fats....how much causes the dumping, could I still have a light choc icecream cone in the evening, or a tim tam now and then....???
Don't want to be completely miserable...

hogarthjanet,
I know how you feel,i have put on weight also in the last few months...i'm a massive binge eater, especially when i'm depressed...i have tried and tried to get myself out of this depression, but its like a catch 22...the cycle of lossing weight and gaining it again is absolute missery!
i also am about the same weight as yourself at the moment, when i was banded i weighed about 135kg and the lowest i got down to was 90kg....which i was happy with, did it mainly on my own will power though, with alot of optislim....but a person can only live on that stuff for a certain while before they start pulling their hair out lol
i go from one extreme to another....there is no middle ground with me WHAT SO EVER!
i'm also seeing someone about it at the begining of next month, hopefully will give me some clarity as to why i am like this.
also seeing my surgeon at the begining of the month, and will get hopefully arranging to get this band removed,so somewhere, not too far down the line i can opt for another form of WLS.
regards Lauren. |

Wow, this is a really interesting thread. I've had my band for almost 2 years with under a 20kg loss in that time. My port has flipped and my surgeon wants to replace it as he can't get to it for fills, I want to ask him for the bypass but i'm not sure he will do it as i'm still interested in perhaps having another baby?
How do you convince them to do it? beg and plead?
Jen
p.s., do you bring up food (vomit) with a bypass or have trouble with reflux, i've had awful pain with it at night, with vomiting in my sleep etc, I would hate to go through all that again and still not get results.

Lauren,
reading your message was like I was writing it, as I have previous written 2 lap bands, 2 major infections now no lap band. Gained weight and am so so so depressed. i get so cranky with myself that I can't control myself. I started seeing a therapist yesterday to see if that will help, I am also trying to arrange the gastric bypass as I really need something, simply cannot do it on my own. I got down to 75 and my world was totally different now am around 108 and do not leave the house. I cannot weight to have the bypass and hopefully get back to my usual confident self. |

Hi Jane,
I just wondered if u were also in melb and if we had the same DR is all LOL.
That is really gr8 that u have a DR you feel so comfortable with and know you will be in good hands with.
My appointment is tomorrow and i am so nervous as i am not sure where to begin when they ask 'what went wrong?' lol
I know i tried my best to get along with the band...lol it is just one of those things...i do feel like a failure and at the moment i'm hanging onto the idea of another type of weightloss surgery for hope,i'm just dreading a knock back from the surgeon for some reason or another...which i don't think i will cope with very well and it literally scares me to death :(
thanks for listening...

Hi Lauren
My surgeon is a gentleman by the name of Justin Bessell, I live in Adelaide. The banding that went wrong was of no fault of his it was just bad luck, one in a thousand goes wrong and i was that one.
I am going to have the gastric bypass done next year once I come home from an overseas holiday. I have a lot of faith in Justin and wouldn't think of using any one but him.
good luck with your decision
regards

Hi jane,
May i ask who your surgeon is??
I was banded in june 07 aswell and too lost a bit of weight (over 40kg) but it wasn't the band that i did it with,it was mostly my own will power and alot of optislim lol (there is alot more to it but i won't go on and on right now)
I have an appointment with my surgeon this week and am thinking alot about going down the track of an alternative surgery as the weight has come back on mostly because i was sick of soups!!!! and eating veggies and salads and all the things they tell u to eat were not going down, only the bad stuff your meant to stay away from!
which has resulted in severe depression...
i had depression before i was banded, but in the recent months i have hit rock bottom...and it all stems down to lack of control of my weight!
regards lauren. |

Hi Everyone
I had lapband surgery in June 2007, which to begin with was a great success, I managed to loose 25kgs with in the first 6 months or so, unfortunately it all went down hill in February 08 and I had to have the band removed. It had slipped ( and let me tell you the reflux was a shocker) Bless my surgeon he tried his hardest to refit the band but with no luck. I have now put back on 20 kilos of that weight that I loss. I have decided to go ahead with the next option which is gastric bypass.( I loved the weight loss and miss the life I had then) I am just wanting to know how much different it is from the banding.( i do understand that it is major surgery etc) How people handle the diets etc after the op. Also would be intested in hearing from anyone who has/had type II diabetes. What I am also needing to know is have many people travelled overseas after having this done? We are travelling to Dubai and Cairo and my surgeon is recommending not to go. (especially Cairo). So I now need to decide on when to have the op. Sorry if I have gone on a bit, would be interested in hearing peoples views.
with thanks
Jane |

| Hi Kelly, I had the lap band surgery on 16/10/2008 and so far so good. I know a lot of people that have had great success with this and I personally would prefer the band to having my stomach stapled as I have been told that this is not reversable, also you have to take multivitamins for the rest of your life if you have your stomach stapled. |
