PS He also talks about the hair loss and possible ways of preventing that as well. I think it is protein and either zinc or magnesium you need to boost in order to prevent the hair loss.

Re:Gastric Bypass opp Reply to this message
Dr Talbot has some very information information on his website about the various gastric bypasses that are available. If you go to
http://www.uppergisurgery.com.au/index.php?sec1617 20557
you can click on the various links that tell you about them. He also has a booklet you can print off and read through which I found to be excellent. It gave me a platform from which to ask him questions...

Re:Gastric Bypass opp Reply to this message
Hi again Jane! I'm so sorry to hear about all your hardship. Weight is a horrid thing and when it hits you mentally its like its got you forever! I am seeing DR Talbot who consults and operates in Sydney, I actually sought him from all the good feedback from this forum! I am yet to see him (next tuesday),as I have been consulting with his assistant who has been great and very informative. I am lucky to not have all complications associated with obesity like diabeties and the like. I have however, like most, suffered from depression. I am still reasonably active and workout regularly which has worked really well, but when tough times come around, I cannot control my eating! I turn into a crazy women and mindlessly eat things that I dont usually have?? very weird. I too have heard some really scarey stories which has been half the reason its taken so long for me to even so far as to having a consult. There is a lot to consider. I was told that it is reversable, but not without risk of course. apparently they operated on a person who developed an over active thyroid which caused the patient to keep losing weight after meeting his goals. They had to reverse the bypass.

What I'm most concerned about is life after gastric bypass. I have ordered some books to read up on as many situations as possible. I am preparing myself by working out and eating right, this I'm keeping my heart/body strong to handle the trauma from surgery and recover well. I am trying to get my head around not being able to eat the way I do now. To try and find other things to focus my energy on. Its inevitable that emotional struggles will follow, but I guess if you prepare as much as you can, you will help yourself on the other side. Best of luck Jane! Keep posting :0)

Hi Greylyn
thank thank you very much, I am just wondering who your Doc is, hope you don't mind me asking, I have heard so many horror stories with certain Dr's. I live in country Vic, and see Dr Mchenry at the Valley private hospital Dandenong, he sounded very good when I went to see him, he gave me some hope about being able to concieve after the op, I am nearly 38 and my weight has caused huge drama's, I have tried everthing. I put on weight as a result of my post traumatic disorder and major depression, I am on a lot of tablets as a result of this which make me gain weight. Hope all your apponitments go well keep me informed jane

Re:Gastric Bypass opp Reply to this message
Hi Jane, I am in the same boat! I have been researching this procedure for long time and finally making some steps towards actually having this done, scared as hell!. I found it really helpful going on youtube and searching for gastric bypass stories. You will find lots of people who have video diaries and walk you through their experiences. Also social networking is a great way of getting personal experiences too, ie. Facebook, search for gastric bypass. It is very informative and also address some of your concerns.

Now that I've done research on the actual procedure my mission now is to find out about life after the surgery. I too am concerned about the hair loss, but I have read many who have had this stop after a few months, but I guess everyones experience is on a case by case basis.

Google, google, google! There is so much information on a number of sites its just a matter of scanning the sites.

All the best with your op! Look forward to hearing your experiences. I am yet to have my second appointment before confirming a date... so nervous, but looking forward to having a life!

Hi my name is Jane I have been reading a few stories about gastric bypass, i just went to see Dr mchenry and he recommended I have the procedure, I am currently goind through all the initial appointments and have been told I will have the op before x-mas, after reading a few stories I am freaked out, I am worried about the recovery time and the hair loss, I haven't found a lot of material explaining the op and am wondering if anyone can point me in the right direction, and has anyone been to Dr Mchenry

Re:Gastric Bypass opp Reply to this message
Most doctors dont like doing key-hole. When it is open surgery they can run the lines better to make sure there are no leakages around the stomach. A small leak can lead to major complications later. Although key-hole has less surgery risk, it has higher post op risk. You need to weigh all the risks up and make the right informed decision for you.

They're really good points about the hair extentions, hinkleydeborah. I was over 12 months post op when I got mine, my hair was still really thin and I hated it. Tassiedevil54 I had my surgery open, simply because my surgeon didn't offer it keyhole, not all surgeons can do it that way.

Re:Gastric Bypass opp Reply to this message
After two years, I finally conjured up the courage to go through with an initial consult at Dr Talbots rooms. It was great, I wasnt too impressed with the less then clean facilities, but grateful the surgery wont be there! I am so scared out of my mind. When he handed me the list of blood tests and things to prepare for I was freaking out, because I havent even decided to go through with it just yet. I am so scared. I have done so much research on this, but when it actually starts happening I feel like putting the brakes on! But I know this is my freedom given to me at my own risk! Wish me luck, second consult on the 24th.

Wow. I'm amazed at how similar my story is to others on here. I'm just wondering if there are any Vegetarians out there who have had wls? As I said in the previous post, I'm booked to have mine in December, but when the dietician heard I was vegetarian, she was quite concerned that I won't get enough protein post op...

Re:Gastric Bypass opp Reply to this message
Greylynn, just wondering why you had open as opposed to keyhole? I'm booked to have my surgery in December, and he has me on this VLCD for one month (started today). He told me that the loss of the fat around the organs would make the difference between keyhole and open surgery... So it's interesting to hear of someone else who had the open one..

Re:Gastric Bypass opp Reply to this message
My hair was falling out by the hand full at about 6 months post op. l am now 11 months post op and the loss has returned to normal. My hairdresser tells me l have regrowth all over, so l am going to wait and see how it goes. Don't go rushing into hair extentions to early. If your hair continues to drop fast the extentions will not hold. They say by the time you notice it coming out you will already have regrowth. If your hair is long and it is freeking you out, go get a shorter cut just above the shoulder. Then the regrowth will blend in faster. Also if anyone comments you can say you felt like a change or its part of the new me. They will think it has been thinned out when it was cut. You can also buy prodocts at the hairdresser that can help you get the look of more volume. They are the 2 things l did. The new style made me feel good to. l think when your overweight its easy tohide under long hair.

Hi Greylynn4, I have heard a lot of good things about Dr Talbot. With regards to exercise, I had my surgery open (as opposed to keyhole). I had four weeks off work and certainly needed it. I guess it's got the same sort of recovery as something like a hyst emy? (stupid yahoo won't let me post this message using the whole word as it apparently contains offensive language, I'm trying to write the word for the operation a women has. It's a pretty big operation. Don't let that put you off though.

Hey Outback_mum, mt hair loss wasn't as bas as yours is I don't think, but I was still destressed, I definetely thinned out. Hair extentions are the go but they aren't cheap. I got them though cos I lost so much hair I looked like a chemo victim. But, even if I couldn't have, I am now a size 10, woooooooooooooo-hoooooooo ooooo

Re:Gastric Bypass opp Reply to this message
Hi everyone. Ok, well I have been thinking about wls for so long. But I kept thinking I could do it the old fashion way. It works for awhile, then the wheels start to fall off after a couple of months. I am so frustrated so here I am. I have an appointment to see dr talbot to enquire about my options. I am 170cm and have gone from 170kgs-155kgs in 8wks with diet and exercise. I have started to eat out again, and nibble on fatty stuff, I just cant control by eating as of late. I dont want to go back and desparate for everone's feedback. I enjoy working out and play basketball. But I know I could be so much better without all this baggage. Has anyone seen dr talbot? and how long after surgery (say bypass) can you start to do vigorous exercise? Thanks everyone ;0)

Re:Gastric Bypass opp Reply to this message
adeey1 thanks for the food ideas. The most upsetting part for me is the hair loss, it started about a month ago (I'm 4 months out from my operation). I think I've lost half my long hair. I know it will stop, but it just has been for me the most upsetting part. I have long hair and I have mega and I mean mega huge handfuls every day.

Re:Gastric Bypass opp Reply to this message
I am one of the genetically blessed ones who has skin that bounced back into place. I can even wear singlets, although I prefer not to. I DID have a tummmy tuck but I didn't really need it that much. The surgeon who did the tummy tuck had me strip to my knickers and bra to have a look at my tummy. She then said "wow - sure can tell you've been at the gym a lot" to which I scoffed, as the only exercise I did through the whole weight loss process was a gentle 15 minute walk most days. I'm simply lucky. I wear size 10 skirts and pants and size 12 tops (I'm 5 ft 5) The tummy tuck made me feel really good about myself.

Hi Adeey,

Always good to get food ideas. I think the slow cooker has been great. Did you have to have surgery to remove excess skin post weight loss? I have only lost 26 kilo's so far but becoming more like a deflated balloon! Hah

Re:Gastric Bypass opp Reply to this message
I'm a "body by Game" girl too and agree that he's the ant's pants. I had my surgery with him 2 1/2 years ago and went from 130 kilos to 67 and that's easy to maintain. With regards to protein, it's hard in the first few months isn't it Mushy eggs were a favourite of mine, dairy foods like yougarts and cheese, I used to put a cooked lean cusiene (meat part only)or one of those fish in whitesauce in a bag things into a blender. What I really really liked was to make up some bolognaise sauce in the slow cooker so that it was very very fine. I would then cook some baby pasta (you can get it from an Italian deli) and have that, with cheese of course. It was SOOO nice to be able to have red meat! It freezes well too. I wanted to do the protein drinks but never found one I liked. I used to put some protein powder in my milk which I put on my weetbix. There's also homus, tofu and baked beans. At the six month mark I started to lose hair through lack of protein, which is common. These days I don't even think about protein, I take an iron and a multi every day and my blood tests come back fine so I eat what I want when I want it.
