Re:problems after Lap Band Reply to this message
Thanks Gail and Lauren,

After my first lap band infection, Dr left port in. I then had a 2 month recovery , then had new lap band put in, afterapprox 6 weeks when I thought everything was going well I woke up one morning with a lead like feeling in my stomach and I was just terrified - I realised then how much I wanted this to work and how scared I was to have it removed again. You see I was constantly sick after the first infection with colds, pleurisy etc so was on a constant stream of anti biotics, when i went off the last lot of anti biotics I said no more, 2 days later that was when the pain started in belly. Obviously the anti biotics were masking the infection. The Dr said no chance of another lap band and he has talked about the sleeve and gastric banding so I guess I shall just have to look into it. I know I need it because I seriously cannot control my eating, I have become so terribly depressed and introverted since this all started. I then get cranky with myself and try to motivate myself but it is not working. So Gail how long do you have to wait before they put the sleeve in??? Have you lost weight??? thanks again for your replies .

Re:problems after Lap Band Reply to this message
Hi Janet and Lauren

I so know where you are both coming from. I had to have my band removed on 5 Sep as I had an acute slip. It happened really suddenly and caused a great deal of pain.

My Dr left the port in as he said he would take it out if/when I decide to have another WLS procedure (most probably the sleeve). Now I am going back into hospital tomorrow to get the port removed as almost 4 weeks from band removal, I am still getting sharp, stitch like pain (much like you describe Lauren) in various places around the port site (including what feels like something digging into my kidney on occasion).

Hopefully this will resolve this issue, but I'm just hoping they don't find an infection around the port when they go in.

Janet, good luck with your recovery.

Regards
Gail

Janet

What about looking into the gastric sleeve??

I have heard of people who have had lap bands and it not working out, then going for the sleeve.

i know that is what i am looking into next.

cheers lauren.

Thanks so much - it means a lot that someone took the time to read about my problems - Had a shocker of a day yesterday but am better today - you just have to get on with it. It is just so hard trying to lose weight the Normal Way!!!I have been offered a place at a health retreat in maleny where they deal with the reasons behind the weight loss so might give that a go- anything is worth a try at the moment.

Re:problems after Lap Band Reply to this message
Hi,

I also did my lap Band in Mexico. I live in Rosarito and I used Dr jardon. He is great and up until this week I have not had problems. It has been more then a year, I have lost about 65 lbs. YES I throw up almost everyday, That is because i am a freking pig with an addiction to food and I push the limets of what I can intake everytime I eat.

THE PROBLEM THIS WEEK All of a suden, Now I have not had a fill in about 5 monthes. But all of a sudden in the last 4 days I can hardley eat or drink anything, Even liquid comes rushing back up. I am SUPER tired, mostly because I can not keep my coffe down. I am not sure what is wrong with me. Lots of siliva, and I can not hold anything dowm. I will go today to my doctor and let you know what happens.

Re:problems after Lap Band Reply to this message
well after posting last time about having band removed etc I had new one put in at Holy Spirit in Brisbane and unfortunately my body has rejected it yet again - I got flown out to Brisbane by the flying doctors as had severe infection. Ambulance picked me up took me to hospital where mind you, the hospital left me waiting for 2 hours in sun room on a wheelchair and drips on the floor!!! The Doctor has removed it yet again and has advised we have exhausted all possibilities of another lapband - I have several huge incisions on my stomach where apparently the site was so infected they had to s *** e out a lot of dead tissue. I cannot tell you guys how much this has affected me - my weight is up to around 105 and I think about food constantly, i have become housebound and am so depressed. I try to be positive for my kids and hubby but I don't know where to go from here. Do i approach surgeon about refund as I paid for replacement of lap band, have had 4 surgeries massive scarring and now no lap band and have put on 20 kilos??? Where do I go from here. The doctor said we might look at gastric banding in about 3 months - does anyone please have some advice for me???

hi lauren_melb
i too am in the same place as yourself. I am over going back to the doc's, i did have a great start in 2004 when i had the op, but since end 2005 i have had nothing but troble for the last few years. My weight will not move which makes it worse. I have gotten to the point where i am accepting the way i am and trying to lose the old fashion way AGAIN. The things we do!

Re:problems after Lap Band Reply to this message
I hate my lap band!!!

i thought by getting this done it would make losing weight alot easier and life in general alot easier.

instead i have never felt 'not hungry' i can eat and eat and eat....

i had fill in got blockages, had fill out, went back had fill put back in and so the merry go round kept going on and on.

i haven't been back since feb this year to have a fill because basicly im tierd of it all....it is not what i was expecting at all,on top of all of this the port is very painful for all different reasons, mean i could be standing in a certain way or sitting or lying and it feels like a stabbing pain...a bit like a stitch.

i really don't know what to do anymore,i know if i go back to see my DR he will just say to put a bit of fill in and see how i go,which im OVER not more will i do that!

i wonder everyday if this was all worth it and should i have made the decision of getting the sleeve instead???

cheers guys sorry for going on and on,but my weightloss at the moment is so depressing and i have hit a brick wall and just don't know what to do...

Lauren (melb)

Re:problems after Lap Band Reply to this message
Hi sdreneau, i refuse to go back to the doc's for further test's. Since he removed my fill i have stopped taking reflux and acid tablets's. I have not been sick in months where i was almost every day before even with a little fill. I know what you mean about the ice cream etc. That was all i could eat, and thick shakes etc as that was filling me up with out the stress of eating something solid. So no i have had no help in the sense of the band beside removing all the fill and being able to eat and keep it down for the first time in about 2 years.I will go back but i am waiting to build up enough energy again as i know what i will have to do to fix it(operation).

Re:problems after Lap Band Reply to this message
I am so glad to finally here people with the same problems I have. I had the lap-band procedure done in sept of 2004. I lost about 80 lbs in the first year and then something happened, and I have not been the same since. I am also unable to eat solid foods and therefore have turned to ice-cream or other high calorie foods just to be able to eat!!!! My doctor is not supportive and thinks that I am just not doing something right. I am not 30 lbs heavier than I was before surgery. Have you had any help yet???

Oh my gosh.
I do hope you have success I can not imagine what you are going through.
I had decided to have a lapbanding but after reading these stories last night I have now decided against it.
Funny thing is I have woken up this morning with different thinking.

Re:problems after Lap Band Reply to this message
I was just reading your posting about the lap band acting as a foreign object. I am currently in the middle of a lawsuit against my lap band surgeon, the weight loss clinic and the hospital. I have severe allergic reaction to stitches, and told the surgeon I could not have them, and he told me he could use other things. The hospital was also aware of my allergies to stitches and had it in my records. Before I went in to surgery I reminded the nurse and told her to be sure to remind the surgeon. She held up the clipboard and showed me the large warning "allergic to stitches". I felt like I had covered all the bases.

During my consultation when I told him of my severe reation to stitches I asked him if anyone had rejected the band..and he said he hadn't heard of anyone that had rejected the band. Well, I had the surgery on August 24th, 2007 and sutures were used. I had to have them removed, which was very painful. My surgeon gave me the $1200.00 dollars that the insurance company paid him. He said he was sorry for the pain he had put me through.

I thought that would be it, but the itching wouldn't stop. I started suffering memory loss, and was told that I had some brain shrinkage. I called my doctor and asked him if I had internal stitches, and he said they were dissolvable and shouldn't have caused a reaction because that kind didn't have the protein like external ones. He gave me medication for inflammation, and infections, and the severe itching. He said the brain shrinkage couldn't be from the stitches, and I shouldn't be still itching from the stitches.

He gave me his cell phone number and for 10 months he called me in medication, and tried to figure out what was wrong. He had me tested for lymes desease, and tried to say I might have rocky mountain spotted tick fever. My bloodwork showed a high ANA Titer level and he said I might have arthritis or lupus.
I just found out he put silk stitches inside me. Do you know where I can research

Re:problems after Lap Band Reply to this message
Hi Amanda i had my band in March 2004 I lost all my weight in 4 months> Finally fell prego's had my child and have had nothing but trouble with my band ever since. My doctor has done everything yours has and more. I was suffering so bad with my reflux and heartburn, with nothing in my port and still ending up in hospital on a drip. Ask him/her to check you Gallbladder. My doctor finally found out most of my problem was that and removed it in July last year. Since then he has tryed to put a fill in but i am still vomiting. I saw him afew months back he has removed all the fill sent me for more test as he thinks it has slipped even though last swallow was fine. I have not gone back for results as i am to scared he will put fill back in and i am finally over being sick.
Sorry its long.

Re:problems after Lap Band Reply to this message
hi, i had my band in nearly 3 years ago. my doc took all the fill out when i became pregnant because of reflux. during the pregnancy i could eat anything then straight after having my daughter by c section everything started to get stuck. i am at the point now where i cant eat any solid food at all and if i try i just vomit and its sooo painful. I got a infection after the c section from the catheter so im wondering if this has caused the lap band to get a low grade infection. This has been going on for 10 months and i have had enough. My doctor has down a gastroscope and a barium and he said the band looks perfect so he dosent know either. i am the first patient that has had this problem.
i would love to know more about your problem to see if there is any similarities.
Amanda

Re:problems after Lap Band Reply to this message
Hi , I had lap band approx 7 years ago - weighed in at 135 kg, I made it down to 75kgs within 2 years and felt amazing. I had quite a few problems with tightness, not being able to eat or drink at times and living in the country it was quite hard to deal with. But to me it was worth it. As I live so far away I got slack and never went back for check ups, I started to gain weight and then had terrible reflux, every night causing sleepless nights etc. I must admit my diet was terrible, I drank a lot of alcohol. I had to go to Brisbane for tests and they did a barium swallow which showed that I had severe restriction,(I had nothing in Port) surgeon decided to put new band in. Oh MY God It has been a nightmare, I have ended up with severe infection in port and after an excruciating 2months in which I got pleurisy, bronchitis and then pneumonia they had to take port out. @ months later I now have a huge scar on my upper belly ( not that that matters was never gonna be a bikini model!!) I have suffered severe depression, left my Government job and have gone up to 102kgs. i can't stand it. I am booked in on the 05 august to have port put back in. I cannot wait as I have been insatiable with food, extremely disapointed with myself that after 6 years I still could not control my eating. Anyway I am positive that this will be a success and everything will go wonderfully(positive thinking!!!) It has been a trying process for my family and myself and I cant stand this feeling of my weight enveloping me again, my kids have made comments re my weight and my husband as well. I cannot comprehend how I weight another 30 kilos on top of what i am now because I hate it so much.

Re:problems after Lap Band Reply to this message
Julie, you are exactly the same weight and height as my girlfriend. We started walking hills June 1st of this year. This is one hour of hard, huffing puffing walking, mostly up/down hill, every night. We did not change our diets at that time. July 1st, we joined a gym, and took advantage of a deal on 2 hours each of personal training. The trainer advised us to eat 300-350 calories 5 to 6 times a day, combined with cardio 5 days a week, and strength training twice a week. Well, she has dropped 10 pounds, and 2.5 dress sizes. A healthy rate! Our cardio has gone from gassing out on a orbital in 6 or seven minutes, to 25 minutes, at a higher resistance. Her sister is 5'7, and 375. She is going in for lap band surgery, but has all the wrong attitude. (She is actually looking up ways to get food through the band!!??!!) I strongly advise you and others, to go to a gym, hire a trainer, and try eating ultra low fat, 300-350 calorie meals, 5 times a day. You are putting your life on the line, on an operating table. Working out is hard, but nothing good comes easy, and the rewards are huge! Good luck! Kyle

Re:problems after Lap Band Reply to this message
Reply to my own reply!
None of my problems with the band have been serious and although I am contemplating an "unfill" I would be extremely unhappy if my Dr were to suggest I have my band removed for this or any other reason. Here are some things I'm finding looking for more info on "foreign body reactions" to the silicone band:

"foreign-body reaction
Chronic inflammation and granuloma formation around irritating foreign bodies."

"The foreign body reaction composed of macrophages and foreign body giant cells is the end-stage response of the inflammatory and wound healing responses following implantation of a medical device. An overview of events leading to the foreign body reaction is presented. These events include protein adsorption, monocyte adhesion, macrophage adhesion and activation, macrophage fusion and foreign body giant cell formation, and fibrous capsule formation. Biomaterial surface properties play an important role in modulating the foreign body reaction in the first two to three weeks following implantation of a medical device even though the foreign body reaction at the tissue/material interface is present for the in vivo lifetime of the medical device."

"The other reason American surgeons might want to proceed cautiously before adopting the Lap-Band procedure is the concern about the long-term problems related to apposition of a foreign body with the gastrointestinal tract. Older surgeons will recall the many reports of migration and erosion associated with the Angelchick prosthesis for the treatment of esophageal reflux. Several recent reports have detailed problems with Lap-Band slippage and erosion. 10,11"

Re:problems after Lap Band Reply to this message
re the "beating" feeling when you eat: You know at first I wondered if that was my heart I felt beating but 6 years out from surgury I'm convinced that the stomach tissue compressed by the band is what is "beating". Your stomach is a big muscle kind of organ and it contracts and moves around. (that is how we throw up by the way the stomach is contracting and expelling)
So what I think is happening is "contractions" of sorts while the tissue held tight by the band is expelling the food in the pouch down into the rest of the stomach.
Make sense?

Re:problems after Lap Band Reply to this message
Hi,
After being banded in July 2002 I lost 50 lbs. I suffered the usual problems related to adjusting to the fact that eating was not an option for me anymore. Since one of my co morbidities allowing insurance to pay for the surgery was reflux I was already used to acid and used meds and staying away from different foods to cope with this.
The problem that I have had for the last several years has been a real tight restriction with almost no fill. I am headed back to my original surgeon this summer (i moved 500 miles away) to find out what he has to say about what medical people seem to call "foreign body" issues.
In terms of my own body I THINK what they are referring to is your body "rejecting" (with inflamation and things like low grade fever and swelling)the silicone band. I guess that is something you would NOT know your body was going to do until you put something foreign in it like breast implants or heaven forbid a pacemaker! (i guess I'd rather know about it with a band than something REALLY life threatening)
So I'm throwing out there the question to everyone (1)Have you had a real tight restriction with less than 1cc in a 4cc band? (2)what did you and your Dr do (if anything ) about it?
Thanks to all
