| Thank God...I have found someone who has had the same problems with the band that I have. I have the pain in the left shoulder..burping, reflux, and vomiting. I lost 100 lbs. and sadly have gained it all back..My Dr. has moved out of the area and I have gone lkto others...I get the band filled and then I regurgitate..if its not filled I'm really hungry and eat...I'm looking into the gastric bypass surgery but the Drs. say my insurance won't cover it...I'm feeling that I just wasn't a good candidate for this surgery and would definitely tell anyone that is mobidly obese to think twice about the lapband. I would like to chat with you...I've been so frustrated that I haven't had anyone talk to. Thank You!!! Helen |

Hi Pretty Rainbow,
12 mths ago, I started gaining a little weight. I wasn't eating almost anything at all, yet gaining. They did the xray with the bariatric drink and it showed the enlargemsnt of the small stomach.. To fix it, they had to take all the fluid out and it was then checked again after a few weeks.
The problem did fix itself and the pouch went back to normal. But!!, Now there is again not much room for more fluid to be put in and I'm eating much more than I should. Thats why I think the prob has returned.
I'm happy to eat as much as I'm eating as although its more that a lap band patient should eat, its still a hell of a lot less than a "Normal" person. If I was at my goal weight, this would not be an issue. But I really want to lose approx 8 kg and then be happy.
Unfortuanlty, since I've now experienced being at a lessor weight, I really really will not be happy until I can get back into my size 10 and size 11 clothes.
I'll keep you posted also on another thing. I've started a ladies gym. It goes for 29 minutes 3 times a week. I will try to follow their eating program and see if I can lose the weight this way. I have never really excercised before, so I hope this will help. |

| Hi jg_punk... I read your post from 15/2 re your small stomach enlarging. How did you know that had occured? I can pretty much eat anything which is surprising. I had my operation nearly 3 years ago and I have lost 70kgs but I have noticed of late that I can eat almost anything.... How did you know that the pouch had enlarged? Did you have a b.swallow test? and how long did it take to get back to normal? Your help would be appreciated. |

I had my band done 10 yrs ago in Melb. All up I lost approx 60kg. At the end I was throwing everything up as well as the band was too tight. I didn't complain too much because I was rapt in losing the weight. I did end up losing too much and really needed to out on about 5kg to be ideal.
What did happen though is my small stomach enlarged, hence, I was eating more and started putting on weight. They took all the fluid out so that the pouch could get back to normal. It did. They added fluid but now I'm struggling to lose the weight. I've now put on 15kg (10kg too much) and scared that they really can't add any more fluid and that the pouch has enlarged again.
I'm starting an exercise program but worried I'll never lose this weight again. Don't know how to fix this. I thought the lap band was my answer for life. I really don't eat too much and I think my body is accustomed to not eating much. Meaning the slightest extra adds weight. |

(I wrote part of my story above and wanted to finish it. And am wondering if I might have the same as the person I'm replying to now.....)
Anyway, I listened to my surgeon and did not loosen the band. Two more years went by following the same pattern. Now, I had begun to put back some weight though not the entire amount. It was all very frustrating and not what I had expected from the Lap-Band when I first agreed to undertake it.
This brings me to about a month ago. I suddenly started noticing that I was able to digest foods more easily. I could eat a small salad or a slice of apple for the first time in four years. Although I was delighted to get these healthy foods back, I knew it must mean something has loosened inside. I have had an upper GI Series done and am awaiting the results. I pray its nothing serious. If it turns out that the saline has merely leaked out, I may just leave it that way. |

Well, after reading some of the problems people have been having, mine are quite minor. I had the Lap-Band surgery in December of 2004. I have a terrific surgeon who is quite brilliant and did a seemingly wonderful job. I was on the bland diet as everyone is in the beginning and lost about 20 lbs. I had no digestive problems at all but by about the eighth or ninth week I realized my weight loss had ground to a halt. I went to see my surgeon and he injected the saline resulting in a much narrower "hole". I lost 10 more lbs. and then ground to a halt again. In the meantime, since the narrowing procedure I began to have difficulties with getting food through my now tiny hole. Of course I took tiny portions, cut everything up like a three year old and avoided obvious "no nos" like green pepper and asparagus, but I also found I could not eat even the smallest part of a slice of raw apple or pear. If it got stuck, the swallowed saliva would pile up on top of the blockage. Ones choice was to either sit there in almost agony waiting for the blessed thing to eventually slide down or go to the facilities and quickly heave it up. (You know which one I chose.) I got very good at it.
I started noticing that certain foods never gave me trouble but here's the Catch 22, they were always high-calorie. E.g. cookies, nuts, chocolate, hummas, jams and of course Ice cream. I'll never forget my surgeon's words: "make friends with soup!" So I did. Invariably, soup of some kind would be my choice if we were out to dinner at a restaurant with friends. All of this would have been tolerable, though hardly ideal, if I had continued to lose weight, but my weight loss stopped altogether. I tried to find foods that I could simply digest. Truth to tell, losing weight actually took a back seat to merely accommodating the Lap-Band. When I complained and asked to have the band widened, my surgeon strongly advised against it saying I would gain all the weight back. So I did not do ... |

| Yes to the itching!! I had my surgery on 12/22/08 and I have experienced excruciating redness and itching around the incision sites only. One night I was just watching tv and all of the sudden it felt like my stomach was on fire and I checked my stomach and all around the incisions were red and itching like crazy!! Its almost 3 weeks later and the itching is still really bad. |

| I got my lap band almost 2 years ago..I had great success in th ebeginning and lost all of my weight(some 80 lbs)in 10 months..and then I started having problems with throwing up. They removed all the fluid and the throwing up stopped. I would also get an unbearable shooting pain across my back and up into my shoulder which also stopped when the band was empty. A couple months go by, new fill and can not keep ANYTHING down..was even throwing up my saliva. Empty band..two months later, new fill again..the throwing up of everything. This has gone on 4 times in the last eight months. Is anybody else having this problem? I have gained back 30 pounds in the last eight months..which scares me. It worked so well in the beginning but now its just frustrating and expensive! |

| You should not make your decision based on a few peoples bad experiences or viewpoints. The band is a tool and it takes some work and discipline. It is not easy to take the time to cut your meat up in pieces the size of a pencil eraser, assure you have 1/2 cup or less, add some sauce or something to assure it is not too dry and then take 30-25 minutes to eat it. It is very tempting to just grab something that is known to go down easy or have a shake. But that is not how we are successful and healthy on the program and it only works well if we follow the rules of the program and there are many and they are difficult to get used to. I really don't think I could have done it back when I had 3 small children and a full time job.....there just was not time to take 30 minutes to eat 5-6 times a day let alone exercise 40 minutes several times a week!! If we eat too fast, we will get sick. If we vomit too many times, we will lose the band. If we eat too much, we will stretch out the band and eventually lose it. There are so many things to consider before getting the band and I hope I considered all of them thoroughly so that I can be successful because it is major surgery and it is a lot of money invested!!! But, it has also been a life saver for so many people as you will see if you visit other lapband forums. You will see many more success stories than failures!! |

Hi Janet
Hope your feeling a bit better today. Well I've been home from hospital for about an hour now. I'd managed to lose about 12kgs in the 11 month I was banded, so was not a huge success with the band.
My Dr said I should wait about 3 months before getting the sleeve done, but I'm in negativ sick leave and am also low on annual leave at work, so will probably get it done end Feb/early March 2009.
I've had a bit of a transference problem as well, but in the form of excessive shopping.... And I also feel like things happen for a reason and maybe all this was my lightbulb moment but in a dramatic fashion.
Cheers
Gail |

In saying all this when I had original band done approx 6 years ago at the gold coast was the best thing that I have done - it changed my life and I was so much happier - I did have a bit of a transference problem - drank a bit too much alcohol but still was a good weight. Why I didn't go and see original surgeon is beyond me as I never had a problem initially and went from 140 down to aprox 75 - then maintained at about 85. so for you people reading all this dont let it put you off I think I have just been unlucky and honestly I would do it all again!!! I cannot stand the gluttonous person that I have become I cannot even taste the food just shovel it into my mouth uuggg!
Anyway they say things are meant to happen for a reason I just wish I knew what the hell my reason is!!! |

Thanks Gail and Lauren,
After my first lap band infection, Dr left port in. I then had a 2 month recovery , then had new lap band put in, afterapprox 6 weeks when I thought everything was going well I woke up one morning with a lead like feeling in my stomach and I was just terrified - I realised then how much I wanted this to work and how scared I was to have it removed again. You see I was constantly sick after the first infection with colds, pleurisy etc so was on a constant stream of anti biotics, when i went off the last lot of anti biotics I said no more, 2 days later that was when the pain started in belly. Obviously the anti biotics were masking the infection. The Dr said no chance of another lap band and he has talked about the sleeve and gastric banding so I guess I shall just have to look into it. I know I need it because I seriously cannot control my eating, I have become so terribly depressed and introverted since this all started. I then get cranky with myself and try to motivate myself but it is not working. So Gail how long do you have to wait before they put the sleeve in??? Have you lost weight??? thanks again for your replies . |
