Re:problems after Lap Band Reply to this message
wow - it's amazing to see so many people with the same problems. It is validating to know that it is a problem with the lapband and not that we "aren't chewing" or drinking too fast....Unfortunately I am now in the USA and its not affordable to have mine out - or it would be gone in a second. My best friend here just joined weight watchers and lost 50 pounds in four months and I just wish I had of had the courage to do that instead of this miserable thing.

Thank you all for writing in as I feel so much better knowing I am not the only one (wow, that sounds bad) I feel like I am NOT a total moron that doesn't quite know how to eat but I have something in me that just doesn't quite work to my advantage or my health....good luck everyone. Dont put up with it for years like I have.

Re:problems after Lap Band Reply to this message
Hi I had my lapband since 2005 I thought that all my problems was me. I use to throw up all the time. My food use to sit in my esophagus for atleast a day or two everybody I talk told me I wasn't chewing my food enough, I was eating much,it supposed to feel that way not to mention I was hungry all the time. I should have known something was wrong because when I had my first fill I couldn't swallow a sip of water so they took some of the fluid out I only lost 30 lbs in the first month. As time went on the problem got worst went to a new Doctor in 4/09 had a upper GI done wnet back to his office on 5/26/09 He told me that I needed the band out immediately. He said that I could leave out his office that day and die. Had removal on 5/27/09. My advice is you no your body better than anybody if you feel that something is wrong 9 times out 10 you are right I recommend removal as soon as possible don't wait til symtoms get worst. My body had begin to reject the band because it was a foreign object as a result my esophagus begin to restrict and cause severe reflex, and severe swelling in and around my stomach it's going to take atleast 4 mons for my body to heal now i'm considerating the gastric sleeve but still waiting to hear from one who has had this surgery it's a new surgery less invasive as the bypass no foriegn objects.

Re:problems after Lap Band Reply to this message
I thought I was the only one!!! I thought it was just me, that I was doing something wrong, to choke on foods such as sour cream, or sorbet! I had my banding a year ago in july and I have had problems practically since day 1! I choke on EVERYTHING! I have pretty much been on a diet of coffee and cream cheese(the only thing that rarely chokes me) and what is infuriating is the weight is still ultra slow coming off. I would really like to have mine removed, like you, to be able to eat healthy foods and not throw them up. but i am scared to approach my surgeon because he has always given the impression that I must be doing something to hinder my progress....but no, i work out and obviously I'm not eating anything bad cuz I really can't eat at all! I am so overcome to have discovered people out there in my situation!

Re:problems after Lap Band Reply to this message
The purpose of a lap band is to enhance the quality of your life. If it's just making you miserable and causing problems then you are better off without it and find an alternative that works for you.

Lap banding isn't for everyone.

Re:problems after Lap Band Reply to this message
Possumone,

The beauty of a lap band is that it is the ONLY reversible gastric restriction operation so yes you can have it removed.

Your stomach will return to normal in most cases. Some people will want further surgery (Sleeve, bypass, another band) to help control their eating while others learn to live on small amounts without the band. Yes some do revert to old eating patterns, it all depends on the person.

But can't you have the LAP BAND removed if you are having too many problems? Doesn't your stomach just go back?

Re:problems after Lap Band Reply to this message
jv36,

There are a number of reasons your father could be throwing up. He needs to go back and talk with his doctor and tell them what's happening. he does risk having the lap band "slip and strangulating his stomach if he continues to throw up all the time.

Maybe you could tell him to go back to fluids only for a few days, to give the stomach time to settle and then start again on mushie foods and then normal foods again.

Re:problems after Lap Band Reply to this message
My dad had lap band surgery at the start of March this year. He has been throwing up most days after eating.I am trying to find out why. I know he may not be chewing his food properly but is there any other reason?

Also, I know that throwing up alot can be dangerous, ive heard about stomachs beaing teared. Is there any other things that could happen from vomiting this much?

Re:problems after Lap Band Reply to this message
Kim,

You need to go back to the surgeon and either a) have all the fill removed and start from scratch or b) talk to him about having it removed. If the band is causing you so much distress then you need to have it attended to, one way or the other.

Re:problems after Lap Band Reply to this message
That is the whole problem. Most of us realize that we have to chew slowly and drink slowly - and once you are having all of these problems, you have no choice but to eat slowly as with every mouthfull you are terrified your going to choke! lol... Sad but true, I do eat slowly, I don't eat the HUGE list of foods that make me throw up - like meat, fruit, some salads (lettuce, celery carrots - all the good stuff) mangoes watermelon, oranges apples....I can choke on ice cream (sorbet of course) I only have 4 mls of fluid in (or did have 4 years ago at my last visit) and my band can take 10 -- so I don't have too much fluid.

I for one am sick of being told that it is my fault as I don't know how to "work with the band" and people assume I am stupid and I don't know how to eat and drink slowly. I just don't think it is right that you can choke on sorbet!!

I just want to get it out and be able to try healthy living and eat fruits and vegetables and run without this horrific pain in my port site when you do exercise. I just hate it. I am only a size 12 now but it is a constant struggle to stay that way - would rather be healthy...

Re:problems after Lap Band Reply to this message
hope all is going well for you you, you are doing all the right things at the moment. i have had my banding for nearly 2 years towards the first 12 months i did have a problem and had to have the band re adjusted. but you need to work with the band it is not a quick fix it is a long term life change.some things i have learnt to do is drink through a straw and i got myselg a child size knife and fork set because sometimes you just forget and put to much food in your mouth. but the best thing i did was only my family know i had i done because some people treat you different when they know you are loosing weight and took an easy way out which it is not.yes sometimes i do get sick but i keep a list of the foods that make me sick and i still have protien shakes. the trick is drink slowly eat slowly and chew the food well remember the hole which the food passes is much smaller now. good luck and enjoy your new life

Yes, not only the esophagus but hair, teeth (I had just spent a fortune on braces and now my teeth are yellowed and chipping from the constant vomiting) skin and wrinkles around the eyes. My kids hate it almost as much as I do..

Re:problems after Lap Band Reply to this message
I am having similar problems with reflux. I am so glad I found this message board. I have had my band since 2005 (had it replaced once). I cough or wake up many nights coughing/ throwing up. I can't eat or drink even water ater about 5 hours before I go to bed and then I still have problems with reflux. Some nights milder than others, but a great night is seldom.
I am very concern about the damage all this reflux and vomiting ins doing to my esophagus.

Re:problems after Lap Band Reply to this message
Hi Lizle, the choice is yours if you have the lapband done, however untill I read this site I didn't realise how many there is of us that are suffering problems from the lap band. Anyway I have had my band in for seven years and I have had it replace once about three years ago. I followed the eating plan however I had trouble the whole time. I found that soild food got stuck more offeren and then liqid started too. I went to the doctor to find out what was wrong and he told me that I had am old band in and I should get it replaced so i did and now I am starting to have all the old problems start up again like food stuck and vomiting, stoamch cramping, feeling sick all the time, I am on permit antacids to stop the refluxs. And to top it all off I lost weight but have slowly put it back on over time. I hope this answers your question, lapbanding is not just a simple case of eating right and chewing your food well because that doesn't always work.

thanks so much Pyretta - just started thinking about it since posting the other day. I have read that there could be a link to stomach cancer or liver damage and thought "uh oh"......

Re:problems after Lap Band Reply to this message
Kim,

The band doesn't rot but can begin to break down over time. doctors are still unsure how long the band can stay in the body before beginning to break down. the original estimate were 15 to 20 years, but it may be longer.

Re:problems after Lap Band Reply to this message
I was wondering, I have been so dispondant and downright angry over the problems I have had with this horrible thing, that I have just not gone to a doctor in over 5 years now. Does anyone know what happens to the lapband - can it just stay in there until you have the time and finances to have it taken out?? Does it rot or attach to the stomach?? Just wondering....

Re:problems after Lap Band Reply to this message
Cooper,

I don't know where yo are but here in Australia , at least where I go, we are asked to see one of our surgeons team at least every six months so they can work through any issues you may be experiencing.

If your problems have only been "recent" you may need to go back and find out if your band has slipped, or get a small amount of fluid out and see if it helps.

I have had my band since 2007 and gained nearly 40kg and had 3 operations in my first year and have only really had restriction since December 2008. If I eat or drink ANYTHING after 7pm I too suffer from reflux and throwing up in my sleep.

I try to work with the band and don't eat after 7pm and am very careful about any food I eat while I am out.

Please go back to your surgeon, or one of his team and find out what is causing the problems.

Re:problems after Lap Band Reply to this message
Cooper6148 - I totally understand. It is so embarassing every time you come back from the bathroom with red watery eyes and everyone knows. My kids and friends are always asking me WHY WHY WHY - GET IT OUT... I even throw up after drinking coffee if I have to big a gulp. And the most annoying thing is I put weight back on so easily if I don't be so careful - I have to work my butt off at the gym to stay under 160 lbs and it would all be the same without the band but I would just feel so much healthier. I CRAVE watermelon or mangoes or even oranges but cannot eat any of that stringy fruit....yoru right though, you can of course eat as many m and m's as you like....

Re:problems after Lap Band Reply to this message
You have to be kidding - going to a therapist or getting "self esteem" has nothing to do with this thing. I have had four operations, spent thousands of dollars and if I have a cup of tea after 9 o' *** at night I almost choke to death in my sleep. Your 4 days in sweetie, hit me back when your a veteran with the constant problems after you start eating solids....

Re:problems after Lap Band Reply to this message
It was very late last night when I was writing and spelled gospel wrong sorry.

This is the first time I have been on this site and as I have read over multiple stories, it scares me so bad because I did so well in the beginning. I have told people this is the best thing that has ever happened to me. I have never felt so pretty I am 47 years old, but if I am suffering as bad as I am and with me only having the band since 2007 and some of you have had it 3-7 years and have gained your weight back. What if this happens to me, and what if my band is having problems. I haven't been to the doctor in 3 months but it is getting worse the heart burn the reflux the throwing up every day after everything I eat. I even have to pull over when I am driving because i have to throw up.

Re:problems after Lap Band Reply to this message
I also wanted to say that with my success I have come off of all diabetes meds. I love it when people tell me you look so good. But then when my husband and I are out with friends or family I eat some then go throw up and when I come back they all just look at me and shake their heads and ask are you sure this is worth it. I can't get under 200 pounds. I even find I can eat stuff like a heath bar or M&M's and not throw up. I find as the year goes by it is getting worse. Does anyone else have any of the problems I am experiencing?

Re:problems after Lap Band Reply to this message
I had lapband in March 2007 I have lost from 310 to 200 done very well. I am a Gosple singer I can't even sing without the fluid coming up in my throat. I wont even drink water before going up on stage. I and am having horrible problems now with even chewing piece of gum and the fluid building up so bad that I have to leave the stage sometimes to go throw up. I am waking up in the middle of the night and have thrown up or am choking so bad. I have bad reflux now. I throw up after every single meal. When I am singing I can't get the high notes anymore. I am so scared I have damaged my vocal cords.
