Re:problems after Lap Band Reply to this message
Good decision....get braces. I lost 25 kilos when I got braces and hadn't lost a zing with the lapband for 4 years....lol...

Seriously - I am thinking of having mine out and getting on with my life. I should never have had it in as I was only 90 kilos - which I know is heavy - but am 5 ft 8 and should have worked harder, longer just eaten 6 meals a day on a non starvation diet. If I had ever had known I would suffer like this for so many years, no way.....

I have already had it replaced twice, slippage, herniated oesophagus, and I am just not going there again. Two months ago I weighed 80 kilos still - and once the decision was made to have it out - I started walking twice a day, 5 miles a day, eating 6 small meals a day - and it is just falling off.

Ladies, Men - try the 6 meals a day - exercise like you never have before - forget Jenny Craig and the other starvation soup diets, forget the lap band - live a healthy happy life and do it yourself.

as I write this - I just vomited up my night time cup of tea......I HATE this thing

i was going to have lapbanding done but after reading all the things that happen i have decided not to do it, its a lot of money to spend and it seems like it can be a nasty thing to have if it goes wrong.

Re:problems after Lap Band Reply to this message
Boy! I thought it was just me. The vomiting 3 times a day, not being able to swallow the simplest things, heartburn and acid reflux is all the time, I have not lost any weight since it was put on in July of 2007. I can't find a doctor that will talk to me because I had my surgery done in Mexico. Don't know what Im going to do. I hope by getting a job with benifits, maybe I can have it removed.

Re:problems after Lap Band Reply to this message
I had lap band done 2 yrs ago.I have lost 94# but I have been having some problems lately. At night if I lay on my side or stomach I get fluid coming up. I am wondering if I stretched my pouch.I went to the doc but was to embarrassed to mention this for feeling guilty and like a failure. Is there anyway to get the pouch back to normal size w/o a procedure? I throw up sometimes 3 x`s a day and sometimes not at all. But I know it is from over eating.

Re:problems after Lap Band Reply to this message
I want to thank you all for sharing your lapband experience. I am at the beginning stage of researching this procedure. I must say that your postings have been an eye open. I did not realize that the vomiting and acid reflux problems could be so severe. The most important things that I took away from your postings is the need to have a terrific surgeon and support team and to contact them ASAP once these problems start. I cannot imagine how some of you have been dealing with so many problems for so long. I pray that you are able to get some relief quickly from all this pain.

What I'm having a hard time understanding is how some ppl are gaining weight when they are throwing up 3-4 times a day? Have you had to resort to "junk food" in order to keep anything done and so is that leading to the weight gain? Please explain.

What I also found interesting is some ppl have lost over 150lbs with the lapband. I live in the states and I attended a free lapband seminar held by a hospital that I am looking to possibly have the surgery at and the doctor stated that they would not perform this type of surgery for ppl over a certain BMI #..I think he said over a BMI of 40 or 45; can't remember exactly. Has anyone else come across this same information?

Thanks again everyone for sharing your experience.

Was it easy switching from lap band to gastric. Did your insurance pay for the revision?

Re:problems after Lap Band Reply to this message
flj,

Taking the Lap band of is no more dangerous than having it put on in the first place.

Seriously there are hundreds, if not thousands, of people who have had their bands removed and even replaced. I would definitely be asking another doctor if you want it removed.

Hey my surgeons refused to take my lap-band off and another surgeons that I went to refuses to take is off as well, she is the best doctor here is Illinois her fatality rate is zero percent. Your doctor must know as mind did that it is extremely dangerous to have it taken off.

Re:problems after Lap Band Reply to this message
I just thought after 6 yrs to look up problems with lap band. I was having problems with my lap band which caused me to have server stomach cramps or rather spasms that felt like when you have a Charlie horse in your leg. I went to get it removed and the doctor told me that it was extremely dangerous to have it removed mail me at flj at ameritech.netand refused to remove it. What doctor did you use. If you do not mind me asking. They do not tell you how dangerous it is when you put it on.

Re:problems after Lap Band Reply to this message
Kim, So sorry yr experience is negative. 4 yrs is a long time between visits. I'd go more than a yr between visits & get a 'you need to come back more often'. But my case is different, I haven't had the problems you've had, so didn't feel the need. I go back if I'm having problems. If any 1 thinks it's yr fault, they are ignorant & u need to dismiss them. U no yrself. U no whats working or not. Try 2 sort it out wi yr surgeon b4 u remove it. U probly didn't succeed wi diet & exercise pre-banding, what makes u think u can after? My experience is, if the weight creeps up a little & I cut back & move more-it keeps creeping up. I seem to have the anti-gene for weight loss! I don't eat meat, fruit & others u listed either. I wonder if some surgeons place the band 2 high? Perhaps some people r not conducive 4 this proceedure. I wish u well Kim. Do what yr heart tells u is right.

Re:problems after Lap Band Reply to this message
I can relate to everyone's problems here. I had vomiting constantly, no weight loss, reflux, damaged teeth and bowel and oesophagus, for 8 years just had it removed and revision to Gastric bypass. Now 3 months out and feel well for the first time in years, down 20 kilos. Still adjusting to eating normal food again as I had existed on mush for so long and had been constantly hungry. Good luck with everyone's decision, but if the lap band isn't working, please don't put up with it for 8 years like me. It is nice to get a normal life again.

Re:problems after Lap Band Reply to this message
Yes, I suffered with ti for two years straight at one point. Waking up with black, acidic vomit in my mouth, throat and up in my nose. Coughing for hours to get the smell and taste out. You don't want to get to that stage.

Bottom line: you need to go and see yoru doctor, you may need an adjustment.

Re:problems after Lap Band Reply to this message
I had my band 3 years ago and lost 30kg- with vomiting about 3 x a day and night gagging. Then I had some fluid removed and now just keep piling the weight on.
This is very depressing, and I think that my body was so jused to 'starvation' mode that I'll put on weight whatever I eat.

Re:problems after Lap Band Reply to this message
Had my lapband about five years ago. Lost about 15 kgs fairly early on and then no more. Have had to resort to dieting andd gym again. A month ago started to feel really sick. Doctor emptied band, it only had 1.5 mls in it! Felt better but now have bad reflux every evening and vomiting after trying to eat evening meal. Haven't been back to lapband doctor, am frightened there is something really wrong and will need more surgery. Also suffer from lots of pain in upper left shoulder. Have to jump around until I burp then the pain goes away. Can't eat steak or fish as it always gets stuck. If I had my time again I wouldn't get a lapband done. I feel like i have an alien inside of me!

Re:problems after Lap Band Reply to this message
debibell,

Go back to your surgeon or one of his team and TELL them how you are feeling. They may be able to help. There is no need to feel guilty. I was banded in October 2007 and I put on 30kg over the first 12 months. I still weigh 20kg more than I did when I was banded.

Talk to them and see if they can help you.

Re:problems after Lap Band Reply to this message
Why don't you just take a break from it and have the fluid taken out? That's what I did, after non stop vomiting I was afraid of stomach cancer or completely ruining my system. So I had all fluid taken out 3 months ago and i'm eating fine, actually to fine, so I start adding fluid slowly next week.
But with no liquid everything can stay down.

hi Leslie, I understand your plight, what a journey you have been on. Thankyou for the information. This is the first time I have heard the remark about "every time you vomit the tighter your band gets" I have some problem with reflux, but nothing like yours, but this statement makes alot of sense. I hope your journey improves, or at least the road becomes smoother, thankyou for sharing it with us here in aus.

Re:problems after Lap Band Reply to this message
Well, I have had the band for a year now. I have lost 100lbs. It has not been easy. Vomiting constantly. Almost like medically induced bulimia. Its horrible, For months now, I have suffered from vomiting in my sleep. I was hospitalized 3 days because I started bleeding in my stomach. Vomiting black stuff, and also coming out the other end. I cant eat almost every day. Some days I can get some things down. Its bad when you get fluids stuck and then youre in the middle of something and just throw up, either at work, driving, or out to eat. Its embarrassing. Sometimes I say I hate my band, and sometimes I love it. Because without it I wouldnt have lost so much. And I dont exercise at all. My fibromyalgia doesnt assist me in getting off my butt and putting it to work. Its hard enough keeping up with my 3 year old. What happens, and you have to realize, the more you vomit, the tighter your band gets, because your stomach is irritated. I see a doctor monthly. I just had .4 cc taken out, and it still hasnt helped. Im scared to take out anymore. I dont want to gain it back, but I want to be able to eat healthy foods and live a good lifestyle. But I cant, I eat it and I vomit. And as I write this, I am suffering from horrible reflux. I am drinking milk to help. And I took my med for it, no luck. Anyway, I had to throw my 2 cents in on this. Right now Im hating it. I want it out and possibly go for the sleeve. If I had the chance to do it over I would do the sleeve. Its safer than the band and bypass. But, unfortunately no insurance supports it. And luckily my insurance paid 100 percent for my band. Where am I going to come up with 14,000? Anyway good luck guys, Im sorry to hear about your problems. They tell me the band is a tool. You have to use it properly. Yeah, well, its really not that easy.
