soyagarenhoefer - YES YOUR NASTY COMMENTS WERE TOTALLY UNCALLED FOR. This site is for "problems after lap bands" I have been on this board for several years and am finding more and more people with identical problems to mine. My doctor did NOT mention all of the side effects - though he did mention herniated stomach and oesophagus - both of which I have had on the second and third replacement. If your operation has been totally successful and you are happy to throw up every day then you should be on the "lap band success stores" page and not on here.
I can eat chocolate because I am down to my ideal weight - 6o kilos - so if I want to eat a piece of chocolate then I am fully entitled. I feel that I should be able to do that however, without choking on it all night and vomiting.
I stand by my comments to all those people who are thinking of having this done - DO NOT DO IT. Try the 3 months with eating 6 meals a day - which is how I eventually did it - lots of water and get off your ass and walk, swim, squat or whatever you can - and do a little bit more every day. It will fall off, I guarantee you. And you can then enjoy a wonderful healthy relationship with your children, your friends, your husband or wife - without the humiliated of regurgiating on the dinner table, in the car while driving, in bed - at a reataurant......
I wont even lower myself to your standard to reply to any of the other rubbish you spewed - I personally have had enough of sweping for a lifetime.... |

| wow this thread is getting nasty. im going on optislim for 12 weeks to get the weight off that way. i still think i can do it without the band. i dont know why you would eat chocolate if you want to lose weight??? it sounds like kimsjohnston needs to go back to the surgeon and get it fixed or taken out and be done with it. im 96kg and feel i can do it without the band if i just put my mind to it. the band isnt a magic bullet but i can see how it would be of great help and if after 12 weeks i havent lost much weight then i will be going for the band but i am sure i can shift the weight myself. just look at magda szubanski |

kimsjohnston You are a nasty piece of work who has obviously gone into this with your eyes wide shut!!
Did you not listen to a word about the drawbacks your surgeon would have outlined, its a waste of space trying to have any sort of correspondence with you. Try to stop shoveling the food in and see if this helps |

Gee, you miss "pigging out" lucky you. I miss being able to drink a cup of tea without throwing up. Or eating an apple, or a fresh bowl of salad, or watermelon, or a mango, or even a bowl of low fat gelatto.
Being realistic, yes there are a lot of foods that you will be able to tolerate, unfortunately for most of the people on this board and 95% of the people that I know that have had this done, they are high carb, unhealthy food - anything that crunches and can dissolve in your mouth..oh, and chocolate.....
As for this board, I wish to god I have been able to make a choice knowing that so many horrific side effects would probably be a part of my every day life - for hte rest of my life. |

| Hi GYPSY there are a lot of conflicting opinions about the lap band and yes there are a lot of foods you simply cannot eat but with a little patience you find there are alot of foods that you can tolerate. The one thing I do miss is going out to a restaurant and having a good old fashioned pig out but for me this is a small price to pay for the results I have acheived. Keep up the research so you can make an informed decision whether this is for you or not. Good luck with your quest. |

I don't know if my last post was taken out of context.
I was not meaning to say that this thread wasn't important. I am interested to read all of the stories here and more everywhere else. I think it is important information to share and I thank you all for that.
I just don't want people to read a few bad stories and dismiss the idea of this surgery actually working out to be a good thing.
Thanks to you all, I now have a few more questions to ask my doctor before I go through with it because of you. |

It must seem that this post would be on the wrong message board, but I was just surfing through the message boards reading up on everything and I stumbled across this thread. The last lot of posts show that people are backing out of this decision because of what is posted.
I can currently only imagine what layer of hell you must be in for this surgery to go so wrong. Sometimes they don't work out to plan.
I am also trying to decide about surgery, but with only reading this thread, you could potentially get only one side of the story (the bad version..)
There is a whole Message board dedicated to Lap Band Surgery (outside of the Weight Management portion). While reading through that, you can see all sides of this argument - both positive and negative. Like researching a few months back to see how the 'average' is going and any questions/problems they are having!
I am sorry for things not working about for those people in this area, but for some people, there are not many other options that will work.
That's my two cents .. |

| sony.... i have been watching and reading a lot of the message boards on lapband and weightloss over the past year. i have been thinking of getting banded but wanted to see how it is affecting people and i have found that a lot of people are very happy and say its the best thing they ever did and other people hate it. so i guess it just comes down to the person. i am closer to making my desision on getting it done. |

| gypsy... Thank you so much for your view on my message, I,m not trying to beliitle peoples very real problems that they are having with the band. Maybe I am just lucky that I have a surgeon I feel really comfortable with and am able to discuss with him, any problems I am having. |

| wow i thought the message boards are about free speach, i know its a support thread but i still think the person calling sonyagernhoefer stupid and the rest of it is a bit small minded. i dont think there is any need for that as all people are invited to comment about there lap-bad experience, good or other. i am happy that she is having the success she was looking for and is not fussed by the small vomits when eating or drinking a bit too much. i think the band is good for some and not so good for others, whatever works for you. |

SONYAGERNHOEFER - I am absolutely FURIOUS as your ignorant and STUPID reply. Have you not read single message on this board. The last post was avoiding going back to her doctor because she "was embarassed" and you go and open your ignorant mouth and blame the problems we ARE ALL HAVING on "stupid food decisions".
Let me tell you something - I have children who I do look at every day. It is because of those children that I am having this horrible wretched thing removed. for the past 5 years they have watched me choke on a cup of tea (oh wait, that must be one of the STUPID FOODS you mentioned) or an apple, they watch me throw up several times a day, my hair getting thinner from the constant vomiting. AFter choking on bile all night I am sick the entire next day and they have to watch that as well. It is because of not wanting my kids to remember my life being THIS that I am having it taken out. Because of my kids that I will keep swimming, eating 6 small meals a day and walking.
Like many others on this board, I choke on liquids, lettuce, fruit and many other foods. I just don't eat anymore. This is my third replacement due to herniated stomach, band wrapped around my oesophegus, and now it is going OUT of my body.
dont come on this board, ignoring everyone elses stories and accusing people of makind bad decisions. This is a support board you ignoramous. |

Does looking at your children and knowing any weight loss is going to keep you in their lives a little longer not matter. So what if the sacrifice is throwing up a few times a bottle of bourbon will do the same thing but you're not dogging this. I to throw up daily but can generally attribute this to stupid food decisions on my behalf, why blame it all on the band? After 30 years of obesity I am now being called "skinny"
something I never thought I'd hear. I play sport with my children for the first time ever, and it's all thanks to gastric lap banding. Please look at your own choices with food before bagging this product get back to your surgeon for adjustment, I see mine every 8 weeks for a catch up weigh in and any additional proceedures. |

Chezza,
You need to find a surgeon who is willing to work with you to have it corrected. Don't be scared to go back to your original surgeon. You haven't failed, I'm sure the surgeon will be happy to help you. You need to get this corrected ASAP.
The Band is not a set and forget procedure, you need to have the good followup at hand for problems which may occur, and then you need to have faith in your doctor that he will help you with those problems, whether it means getting the band out or any other thing that may help.

| Hi, I had my banding done in 2004. Initially I lost almost 40kg but I then developed bulimia because all I could eat were foods that were high in calories that were easy to eat. I have severe reflux which is very severe at night where I have bile juices coming out of my nose and mouth. I am taking two lots of medications for this but with little relief. I am now almost at the same weight as when I had the banding done. I live in rural Australia and there is only one surgeon that I would be able to see but he refuses to see me as another surgeon in the city did the procedure and like most of you I am too embarassed to go back as I feel that I would be considered a failure. Also I have private health insurance that covers top hospitals but the procedure to have it removed would cost $3,000AU. So where to from here? I am researching to see if anywhere else in my capital city will look at removing it or at least to take all the fluid out. PLEASE ANYONE RESEARCHING TO HAVE THIS DONE PLEASE THIS IS NOT AN EASY WAY OUT TO WEIGHT REDUCTION IT IS A NIGHTMARE, PLEASE RECONSIDER HEALTHIER OPTIONS. |

| My advice is don't do it. I am miserable. I used to be a happy go lucky person. Now I feel depressed often. Just do your best to eat right and walk everyday if you can. |

| I am a 56 year old male. After years of being 70 lbs overweight, I had the surgery almost 2 years ago. Initially I lost 45 pounds in the first 6 months. I had a couple of adjustments.I have now gained back most of the weight. I throw up almost everyday. I think I eat the wrong foods because thats all that stays down. I have horrible acid reflux again like before the surgery. I never know what food will trigger the throwing up. I can eat something just fine one day and the next day i'll get sick eating the same thing. I have contacted my Dr. I am strongly considering having it taken out. Life is much worse with it. I would never have it again. I think without it I will be able to do better on my own. |
