jungle,
Have you had all of your fill removed and still suffering from throwing up?
Has your surgeon suggested a larger band would be beneficial?

| I too, would definitely have the surgery again. I had mine in 2004, with many complications. The band was too tight for my stomach, and my surgeon had to replace it with another band. This caused me to become severely dehydrated, and was fed intravenously until my surgery two weeks later. Also, I developed a staph infection and blood clots, unrelated to the lap band itself. I almost died; however, I live a much better life today had I not had the surgergy and difficulties that came with it. Yes, it is frustrating not being able to eat anymore, and I throw up when I eat too much, or eat the wrong thing. But after losing 125 lbs (and still counting!), I can now climb a flight of stairs; I can shuffle my bags through an airport without having to sit frequently; and, I love what I see in the mirror these days. Yes, it was really worth it for me! |

Wonder if anyone can help??
I had my gastric band fitted on 30th April this year and have lost over 6 stone so far! Thats not the problem.
I firstly had an infection which I then had to go into hospital for a week, then the tubing came through my open scar which then resulted in the Port being taken out. They then thought I had MRSA, then Gallstone, then H-pylori and then finally some kind of bug! Had to be on anti-biotics which I am still taking.
However, I had the port put back in about 4 weeks ago and now have another infection! I had to keep the staples in until Monday just gone, I then woke this morning to find that my scar had opened up and I could see partially the port and tubing. I phoned the hospital, who are now advising that they may have to take the whole band out and that they cannot replace this - even at a later date!
I am at a loss, this is really the last hope and do not really want to have a bypass.
Has anyone out there suffered similar circumstances and were able to keep the band in?? I would appreciate any help.
Thank you

Hi,
I had this problem for about 3 months, it is just going now. I take Omprezol 20mg daily and also drink lots of Actimel or Activia yogurt. It seems to help alot. Also, cut out spicy foods!
I hope this helps as I know it can really hurt.
Good luck

Chris,
The port has been stitch to the muscle on the left side, which is why it is so sore and feels like you can't use it.
It does take time in some people for it to heal, but I'd be hoping that within 6 weeks you should start to be able to use you stomach muscles again.
Just be careful not to over do it because you can "flip the port", which is to say the port turns on it's side and makes having a fill difficult. It could result in further surgery to correct it.

| Thanks. I'm in Long Beach, California. It's been 10 days now since the surgery, and I finally feel nearly normal. I still have a little pain where the port is, but not so bad. I went back to work on the seventh day after my surgery because I really needed to, but I honestly felt pretty bad and wiped out on the seventh and eighth day. Back pain, and I have no muscles on my left side where the port is. When do my stomach muscles come back, and when can I finally get back to sleeping on my stomach or left side? |

italychris,
Yes it is quite common. There are a lot of people who have experienced the same pain on the Lap Banding Board.

| I just had the surgery done last week (August 28) and so far so good. I didn't stick to the diet of clear liquids though. I mean, for the first few days, yes. But, by the third day I was starving and getting really light headed. I cut some chicken into tiny little pieces and added it to my broth, then I started eating miso soup with tofu, and some wonton soup as well. I know the band is open wide right now, and that is what is permitting me to eat, but according to my own scale, I have lost about 12 pounds in the first week. My question to other bandsters is, is it common to have pain around the area of the port...specifically a burning type of pain. It's less and less, but I find when I take a deep breath when my body is at an odd angle, it burns. |

Question? Is your doctor doing the fill? or you having the x-ray scan (like the one when you had the surgery)? If possible have the x-ray scan when you have the fill. You can see how fast the liquid is going through the band. The lapband is just a tool. When it is set correctly the meal size should be about 1, 8 oz cup. If after 1 week, you are still having hungry pains, call you doctor back. I learned the hard way that too tight is worse than being too loose. Find a eating program *ie, count carb or fat and between the two tools you will lose the weight and keep it off.
Good luck, just don't give up. Weight lost slowly is better than losing it fast. Also exercise. Best Wishes, |

| I read your message with much dismay. My neice had the cut and reroute done in 1998 and my daughter had the staple in 2001. They have also gained some of their weight back. The lapband is just a tool. Just like the South Beach diet. Maybe you can put the two together and have a successful program. The basic plan is to eat less, lose weight and enjoy life more. Good luck. |

funfil,
There are a lot more people over on the Lap Band board who can help you with an answer to that. Just post your question in General Chat.
You can find the board here:

Had mine done last Spet. and I would do it again in a second. Not even a year out and have lost 105lbs.
I don't miss the eating like I thought I would, it really doens't bother me at all. I thought for sure it would and to never have pop again doesn't bother me & I used to drink at least 6 cans a day!
Do it, worth everything.

I'm so happy that finally I found a site where people are talking about their dislike of the lapband. I had mine done in 2004 and lost 40 pounds initially, which I've since gained back. I throw up at least 2-3 times a week and hate it, hate it, hate it. I tell everyone I know to not get it done. The biggest reason is that, as you guys have mentioned, you can't eat healthy foods normally. There is a trick, however, if you eat the softer foods, such as veggies and fruits BEFORE your main course, you should be fine - salad as well. If you eat them directly afterwards, you will die - especially with fruit. It makes me immediately naseaus and I have to throw up. I can't tell you how many times I've been at a restaurant and had to run to the ladie's room because I had drank coffee or had a piece of fruit too close to ending my meal. I have also had to vomit up my coffee into my desk garbage bin in the morning many times as well - and this was almost an hour after eating breakfast. Eggs are the worst for this. They take forever to digest - especially egg whites. I really really miss having my coffee and breakfast together at the same time.
As for meat and poultry. I can eat red meat just fine, but can only eat chicken when it's fresh and hot. If it dries out slightly, I'm running to the bathroom to barf it up because the pain in my chest is unbearable.
I have had no complications from the band with regard to having any more surgeries, but I really want to take it out. I know if works for some people, but didn't do any good for me. I can't eat as much food as I once could, but I can still eat enough - and I can eat any dessert I want, which is my downfall. My problem is carb-related, according to my doctor, so I am now doing South Beach. Wish me luck. |

ark,
Acid reflux is a sign the band might be a bit too tight. Get back to your doc ASAP because the reflux can cause all sorts of problems itself.
If you want to chat to other people going through the same things, check out the lap band board.

kalamazoo,
You aren't alone. There are a few people I know who have been through this. If you want to talk to them they are on the Lap band board.
Have you been offered any alternatives? Do you want further surgery?
You need to talk to someone doubt the depression. Please, don't go through this alone, you don't have to.

Most of the people I have met have all had the same problems. Even a nurse at the hospital told me that most of the people she had seen had the same problems as me. It is really annoying as I just spent $6000 on braces for my teeth and now I am having huge problems from the throwing up - it is eating away at my teeth. The first time, even though the doctor told me for 16 months that nothing was wrong, I had both a hernia and slip. It is terrifying waking up in the middle of the night choking on your own vomit. Humiliating having to throw up in the middle of a coffee shop because you swallowed too big a mouthful of coffee.
My last visit, about 2 years ago, I had 4mls, and I have not gone back since. I just want to get it out. |

Hi There
No,would never have it done again. Be glad to have it out if i decide on that. It is life changing and some times not for the better. It has ruined some peoples life. After the op u will have a whole new set of problems to deal with. Wind, burping, Reflux, heartburn, futher surgery, heniars, gall bladder attacks. and many many more.
Dehydraditon, vitiam defiency , these are all the things to consider. I am now trying to invesitgate the long term effects. You may have none of the above, you may have some , you may have many many more.
I am trying to be honest with you.

Kims,
I'm so sorry you banding experience has been so traumatic. Most people don't have the problems you have had, and reading what you have been suffering, I was wondering if you still have any fill as you may be over filled, or if you have had a slip.
You should be able to eat MOST foods. Yes red meat and bread can be challenging, but most people with a band can manage meat if it is cooked slowly and well. Vomiting or even productive burping should not be common place and reflux is a sign that there is a problem with the placement or restriction.
I do feel for you and hope you can find a health professional to help you over there. Banding is becoming more common in the US so hopefully treatment will become cheaper.

The six women I was in hospital with, plus the many I have met since 2003 when I had my FIRST surgery done, have all had to have corrective surgeries - which means more scars, more vomiting, more damage to the teeth and hair. But the scariest thing for me is the chocking at night. Waking up chocking on my own vomit, coughing up relfex all night and not sleeping. It is terrifying wondering if I will chock myself to death. All of this and I lost 10 pounds. I lost a further 30 pounds when I got braces on my teeth.
Another thing people will not tell you is the lack of healthy food you can eat. I have not eaten red meat, sausage, chicken, most fruits, some vegetables, which severely limits social occassions. Nothing worse than trying your hardest to eat small things at a dinner party and vomiting in your mouth at the table, or the coffee shop or while driving in your car - just vomiting 10-20 times a day.
Get a personal trainer and do the hard work, my son just lost 90 pound that way and is so healthy. |
