HI steve916357
as this is a thread for lapband problems -- have you tried looking through the general lapband thread
http://au.messages.yahoo.com/lifestyle/lap-band/
there are positive and negative things there-- I found it very useful in my decision to be banded --I was banded last Monday. I also had heartburn / reflux -- not happening at the moment -- however am only eating small portions.
Cheers Katy |

Every-one is different with their lap band journey, some people choose to have a tight band for instance others not so tight.
some people go off the rules from time to time, some are very strict.
whichever way it is, even if you sail through the whole lap band thing, there are times when things happen, you go off the rails, or you get stress etc all these play important roles in the life of a lap banded person.
every journey is different, and not all the problems are associated with not following the rules.some times thats they way it goes. |

| Hey Guys I am being banded on Tuesday and you are all freaking me out. I have to ask and I do not mean to be condescending or anything but are the problems you are having because you are not sticking to the regime ie not drinking with your meal, stopping when you are full, eating the right stuff and the right times etc .....Am I being naive? Right now I eat pretty healthy I just too much and I am counting on the band to restrict the amount I eat .. again I ask am I being naive??? |

| It sounds like your band has to much fluid in it. If it is to tight and the food can't get past you will produce more saliva to try and get it down and that is what comes up before the food. Try returning to small amounts of fliuds only for a few days that may help it to settle. l found doing this after each adjustment for 3-4 days made it easier. Also a slip is also possible so keep that appontment but if you are unable to keep down any fluids only then call your doc straight away and say it is urgent or you will dehydrate. |

| I had my lap band in Mar 09. At first everything was fine, then I had a fill in August and I have been throwing up like crazy. Now I throw up large amounts of saliva after I eat, two or three times before the small amount of food I ate comes back up. Is this slippage, I finally called my doctor today but I can't get in till November 12 or so. |

| i read some of your posts about lapband i suffer from heartburn now and was thinking of getting lapband, but heard that it might not work well for me do to all the heartburn i have now,i was told gastric bypass is a better option for me,do you think that might be an option for you and just wanted to ask you to comment in general on your experience with the band,i am unsure whether to move forward with the band reading all these stories or try it again by dieting but am afraid of the same outcome of losing then regaining the weight back, just looking for your feedback. thanks |

I too am up late tonite. I have had about 6 fills - yes, I still throw up if I don't chew enough and take little bites. I am 2 years out.
However, I am getting severe reflux symptoms from my last fill- way to tight.
wakiing up with bile in my mouth, pain in my chest -
so....after reading these blogs I'm gonna call my doc today and have him reduce my fill. |

I buy this awesome protein shake called "slim smart"
http://www.grandmasherbs.com
25 grams of protein!! and it is good. lots of vitamins, sweetened with honey -
go on the website and check it out. It has definitely saved me and I feel like I am getting something into me that is healthy.
I also like the toddler turkey dogs in the baby food asle. All protein and satisfying salty flavor. I keep a jar with me all the time - that and string cheese and some nuts. |

Hi Kim,
I had all the same problems as you and everyone else, very sick and eventually was putting weight on. I didn't have it replaced as some suggested but had it removed after 8 years of sickness and only living on mush. Had it replaced with a gastric bypass and haven't been happier. All the refux and vomitting has gone, have lost 55lbs (25kilo's) in 6 months. Small meals but normal food. Good luck with your decisions, cheers Lyn |

Hi guys - I don't think anyone that has never woken up choking on your own fluids could ever understand how terrifying it is. You can choke to death if you dont' wake up in time and with it coming from both the nose and mouth, it is so scary. I was up again last night for the third night in a row - waking up coughing every 20 minutes with what feels like fluid in my lungs. Then have to go to the bathroom and vomit an then back to sleep for another 20 minutes. agggg, I look 20 years older.
Good news is my insurance is about to kick in and I can have this thing removed. I too have had it replaced twice. First time, slippage, hernia, scar tissue......I wanted it out then and they talked me into going again. Second time the same. Now I just want to be able to eat and apple or fruit and be healthy.
I implore all of you who have or will have it out - try the 6 small meals a day - fruit, yogurt, a half a sandwich, crackers and tomoto, soup, salad, just six small meals a day, lots of water, and walk one block further every day or swim one lap further every day. Dont give up - I can assure you that you will see results and feel HEALTHY.... |

I too was having daily vomitting, really bad burping, reflux so bad I was vomitting in my sleep, my throat felt like it was on fire all day everyday, it was doing my head in. My surgeon did a endoscopy and found nothing wrong ( I was at 6 mls) so took out 2 mls to see how I went and didnt want to see me for another 3 months. It all continued so 2 weeks later I went back to him to get all my fill taken out.. And it all settled down.. I got a referal to a second surgeon to have the band removed, I couldnt stand it anymore... I had it removed 4 weeks ago and he couldnt find anything wrong with the band but said my stomach was a bit inflamed ( it settled because of no fill).. Im now 4 weeks postop and am just getting over a staph infection that started almost 2 weeks ago.. I was that sick I thought I was going to die.. Im so sick of being sick.. I just want to get better and have my kids see me well.. The band is great for some ppl but not for others.. I dont regret having the band at all.. At least I tried.. But it wasnt for me..
Thanks for all sharing your stories its nice to hear Im not the only one..
Jo :) |

| Im been going through something similar. I had the surgery a couple of years ago and was doing ok i think .I lost 60lbs and i had about 15 more to go when i started having reflux while i slept and would wake up *** ing with my own saliva.I had never had heartburn or reflux and was told that for some people it actualy make the reflux dissapear if they have it.Anyway , i went to my doctor and he emptied out the band and i was doing well until a couple of months ago it started again .The waking up with vomit in my nose and throat is more than i can bear.Ive taken nexium to help and i even threw that up too. Im afraid my band has also shifted and i dont want to go through surgery again. Once was enough. And i dont have the same insurance that paid for the surgery in the first place so the new company is not wanting to pay for the doctor visits. I think thats why i kinda put off going see the doctor again.I was hoping this would pass but after reading your problem , im going to make an appointment for next month. |

I had the band surgery 6 months ago. I had the first fill-up 6 weeks after the surgery, and I thought that was my "sweet spot". My doctor thought that it was strange to only have one fill-up and be restricted, but I was having good weight loss, so he wanted to keep a check on me. After a couple of appointments, I told him I was not able to eat all my protein, so he took the rest of the fluid out. Food went down well for less than 2 weeks, and then I started eating less and less and was finally down to eating jello or pudding and probably only 20 ounces of liquids. I was dizzy and passed out a few times due to dehydration.
So, I called the doctor on Wednesday and he thought the band had slipped or I had a hernia. So he scheduled my surgery for Friday. After the surgery, the doctor stated that my body had rejected the band and scar tissue was forming around the inside of the band to try and push it away, but instead the scar tissue was crushing my esophagus. So, he had to remove the band. He stated it was such a rare side effect, they don't even list it.
I am so disappointed. I have lost over half the weight and I am scared of gaining it back. I have researched the internet this weekend and have only found 2 or 3 cases. My family keeps saying "now you know how to eat, just keep it up". Well, I have always known what to do, but couldn't do it by myself. Therefore, I got the band. They removed the band 2 days ago, and I meet with my doctor next week.
If you have had your band removed for this reason, what is the next step. What questions should I ask him, and what has been the outcome of other people with this problem?????? |

| Tell me about it! My son got sick two years ago and a two day hospital visit ran into 80,000 dollars. I just couldn't afford that again for this operation. Just keep trying to eat 6 small snacks a day and of u feel something seriosly wrong never be afraid to make yourself heard by ur doctor. I only had 30 kilos to lose and it is fabulous having lost it finally.... So keep working hard and good luck |

Thats fair enough :)
I'm glad that you've seen a doctor and can finally afford to get rid of it - I couldn't imagine living in a country where the healthcare is so expensive. I hope that it all gets sorted out for you soon.
Thanks for your encouragement, I'm certainly hoping that I won't have any problems but I guess time will tell. |

Lol...I had no intention of jumping on you...I just get very frustrated when stupid people come on here insinuating all the problems these poor people on this site r self inflicted thru sheer stupidity. When u continually choke and vomit the
first thing of course is to chew chew
chew. We all know that and all the other rules, so when someone
comes on here that really doesn't have a clue and compares the horror of nearly choking choking to death in ur sleep to excessive boubon booZy hangover sickness......it really pisses me off.
But now for ur question... I did see a doctor and for the third time have complete slippage. I have relocated to Canada where I can now afford to get rid of this thing. Finally. I hope it's much better road for u, good luck |

kimsjohnston: I remember reading a few pages back that you still had about 4mil in your band, have you tried finding a dr in the US who will take out all your fill for you? USAFills seem to have locations in most states and they will do patients who have had surgery done outside of the country.
Before you start in on me, yes I'm newly banded so I know you're going to tell me that I have no idea what you're going through or whatever but if I'd been having problems for 4 years I would think that my first step would at least be to get all the fill removed and then go from there. |

| Sounds like u have a good surgeon. I was given a pain killer I was seriously allergic too after my op and threw up for two days. For 18 months I complained to my surgeon that I couldn't stop vomiting and he just kept teling me I wasn't chewing enough or eating drinking too fast...just totally ignored my complaint. In the end I had a herniated stomach and band slippage. Point- it's not always ur fault if the bands not working- if ur dr is not listening - keep pushing. |

| i am only 5 days done and it is definatly liquid only the surgeon who place my band explained everything clearly to me and i was made to read a book on it before the band was done i also then had to sit with a nurse and discuss it as well i was stappled 20 years ago but they tore away from the stomach which lead back to the weight gain reason why i had banding this time it is all about working with the doctors and telling them what is going on if this fails it is not the surgeons fault its mine and i then must change the way i am eating and inform the doctor as well it is not a mirrcal it is making the band work for you |

WOW!! I had no idea. I was banded last November but because of money I only got my second fill yesterday. Till now I have been able to eat anything I've wanted and of course, as I am a compulsive overeater, I lost 30 and gained back 15 lbs. between the first and second fills. Today, one day after my second fill, I have found that I can drink hot tea but anything cooler that room temp doesn't go down well. I'm on my way out to get a few bottles of that clear protein drink. Can someone post a list of foods that never or rarely cause sickness if there is such a list? I haven't vomited because of the lap band..yet. (I spent a good deal of both my pregnancies in the bathroom sick and I really never want to go through anything like that again)
Thanks for your help.
