I have taken St John's wort in the past for depression, but I found after a while the affects wore off. You should not take it any longer than 6 months at the most.
The best thing I can suggest is go and see her doctor and discuss your concerns, then let the doctor see her and take things from there. |

thanks Paulpt1, but think it was purely reactive in her case - due to previous abusive life, death of pet etc etc. At this stage she's right back to her old self and keeping up her sport, friends etc. Thanks very much for your input.

St John's Wort seems to work for mild depression but for a 15 year old I wouldn't rely on it alone. Make sure you are not missing a B vitamin deficiency like folic acid or B6 as you often don't get enough in the diet. Also check for zinc and magnesium deficiency. Zinc is important for hormones and blood sugar balance. I recommend Zinc picolinate. Other products worth checking out include Proxan, SaMe and L Tryptophan(not taken with St Johns Wort)

Be aware not to take with other prescribed medications like xanax or anti-depressants. tell the doctor you are taking st. john's wort as it does effect other medications as it is a strong herb. my doctor told me it is a herbal form of anti-depressant. also, it can effect other medications, the oral contraceptive is one it effects.

St John's Wort is very good. I am currently taking it and feel like it has lifted my mood and feel more relaxed. Suggest, trying yoga or meditation may help also. You can take over herbs to assist the st. john's wort. try a herbalist or a natropath should be able to help.

Has anyone had good effects from using this herb for depression? My 15yo Granddaughter is now suffering after-effects from years of emotional abuse. She saw a therapist when she first came to live with me 2 years ago, but depression has now hit her and she's adamant that she won't seek counselling again. I've been advised by the psychologist and pharmacist that this herb may be helpful and not harmful. Any info appreciated very much...
