| I am a member of fitness first, but I hate it. They traped me to sign one year contract and made up a fake account for me. Now they can have a good reason to charge me money- $5 administration rejection fee. |

| I agree with you, but what I love about them is the fact that they have really good service even when you're not in a session. Their 24 hour availability is a tremendous help to me when i feel demotivated, or i just need to ask how to perform a certain exercise or what food to eat. |

Fitness First is so overrated. I would have to say that the best gym is not exactly a gym. :) I'm currently using Fitness Crew and they have the best trainers ever, they provide you with tips on how to change your lifestyle, what workkouts are best for you, plus you have focused attention.
I've lost more than 5kgs in the two months I've been with them.
I think the best perk with Fitness Crew is that your trainer eventually becomes your friend. What's more my friend is in the ride for free :) |

| Have to say my favourite gym in Sydney was Balmain fitness. Not sure about data on retention numbers, but I went there for years before moving to Brisbane (yet to find anywhere I like) and they seemed to keep the majority of people that came in at the same time as me. Great old fashioned service and everything worked and was clean. Plus they were always straight up with fees etc and sent me a letter on my birthday! No air con, which some might see as a minus, but i preferred it. Also no posers, just locals trying to get fit like me which was nice. |

Hi,
Choosing a gym that is right for you is a personal decision, It also depends on whether you are an experienced trainer or new to the gym scene. Fitness first does have great facilities & are located in Nth Sydney but have a reputation for poor service & you do not get any other support so if you want to go alone then they are fine.
I am however in the industry & know for a fcat that the gyms that have the highest member retention rates over any other gyms in Sydney are:
Energise health club - Belrose
Millenium helth Club - Waitara
Plus Fitness Health Clubs - a few locations.
Unfortunately none in North Sydney however!
I guess you could debate the strengths & weaknesses of any gym but I guess the ones who retain their members must say something for them (Fitness first have the worst retention). I guess at the end of the day the best gym is the one who actually gets you the results you are after so think about why you haven't in the past & see if the clubs you try out or enquire about can overcome this & actually help you.
Hope this helps & good luck |

I hate fitness first!
They gave me a bloody hard time trying to quit, treat you like dirt.
They took over my local gym a month after I joined and charged me at the platinum rate $49.95 per fortnight.
It wasn't the gym I signed up for. A few months later, there were an influx of people, the equipment was crowded, the friendly desk staff were replaced by impersonal Fitness First staff. |

| Ive been to the mounties workers club gym, extremley impressive, they spent something like 18 million on the gym and pool. Worth the visit, if I lived in Sydney, that would be the one I go to. |

Its new year and I am thinking of joining a gym. I was thinking Fitness First but after reading the previous thread, I am looking for other options.
I actually called FF this evening and inquired on their pricing but they hung up the phone while trying to transfer me to the sales manager. I take this as a good sign as it wil give me more time to shop around. :-)
Any good gym recommendations in the North Sydney area?
Cheers |
