I have the same problem. My Doc. thinks I might be getting into Ketosis. I cut this info out of a post at about:http://lowcarbdiets .about.com/od/faq/f/whati sketosis.htm

Ketosis means that our bodies are using fat for energy. Ketones (also called ketone bodies) are molecules generated during fat metabolism, whether from the fat in the guacamole you just ate or fat you were carrying around your middle. When people burn fat for energy, it makes sense that more ketones are generated. Some of those ketones (acetoacetate and & -hydroxybutyrate) are used for energy; the heart muscle and kidneys, for example, prefer ketones to glucose. Most cells, including the brain cells, are able to use ketones for at least part of their energy. But there is one type of ketone molecule, called acetone, that cannot be used and is excreted as waste, mostly in the urine and breath (sometimes causing a distinct breath odor).

If enough acetone is in our urine, it can be detected using a dipstick commonly called by the brand name Ketostix (though there are other brands, as well). Even though everyone is generating ketones continuously, this detection in the urine is what is commonly called "ketosis."

I will be testing my kidney function and urine. By the way I am 46 180lbs and healthy.

I get a strong ammonia smell inside my nose when I get sick - I haven't exercised at all - this is the second time it's happened. Any idea what's going on? Someone suggested it might be a kidney problem - anyone have any medical knowledge to back that up or not?

I have read all these blogs here. I had the same experience. Two times in the last two months. What I considered it to be was this: I had either ran or worked out hard before both of these experiences. Both were done without proper nutrition, as I woke up and ran hard, and woke up and worked out hard without eating breakfast. Not smart, but after thinking about it, this is what they both have in common, as I don't normally have this experience... so, be smart, and feed the machine before you put it to work.

The ammonia smell is famous at US Army Ranger School. Young men at their physical peak begin smelling strongly of ammonia after weeks of insufficient caloric intake, lack of sleep, and non-stop exhausting exercise. The smell is assumed to be the indication that the body has stopped burning fat and started burning muscle. Drive on.

Re:Ammonia smell after exercise Reply to this message
Ok, I read all of the info in this thread about ammonia smell. I had always been a runner (average 6-8 miles a day, 7 days a week). I had kidney failure in Sept of 2003. Almost died. Was born with only one functioning (but 100% functional) kidney and after the failure I now have this ammonia issue, but here is what really happens: depending on what I eat, especially processed foods, I start getting a "taste" of ammonia which seems trapped deep in my nasal cavities and down my throat. I actually have to "pull" this taste out if you will by swallowing air and tasting the same air as I swallow it (a method I devised to identify the ammonia). It's as if ammonia vapors were travelling within my throat and nasal cavity. I suggest all of you who experience any ammonia taste/smell to run a kidney function test (cratinine/BUN). We think we're perfectly healthy, then wham! Also, you won't be healthy at all if you smoke and drink, no matter how much you exercise... just my 2cent. And good luck to all. LH

OK, I see a lot of questions, but no satisfying answers. I also get the ammonia smell in my nose after exercise (NOT in sweat). It sounds like we have a bunch of healthy people here, so I guess it's not a problem?

Re:Ammonia smell after exercise Reply to this message
I've been experiencing this same strong ammoniac smell for several years, even after only mild exercise (and, yes, it's internal, as if coming from my nasal passages or respiratory system, like the way you can still smell a mint several minutes after eating it). Oddly, I never used to smell this when I was younger, even after a long distance run. The only other time I've experienced this is a couple of times after eating brie cheese, so I'm wondering if it's somehow bacterial?

Re:Ammonia smell after exercise Reply to this message
The very same thing just happened to me for the first time yesterday evening. I noticed the scent of ammonia after walking home from the gym. My workout was about an hour's worth of weightlifting, but I did not sweat very much. I smelled ammonia when taking deep breaths through my nose, but my wife did not. It's almost like someone sprayed a little Windex all the way up my nostril.

It went away within a few minutes. I also noticed that this particular workout wore me out a bit more than usual. I had eaten a carbohydrate-packed meal about 1.5 hours before the workout.

Re:Ammonia smell after exercise Reply to this message
I just experienced this for the first time a few minutes ago. I had gotten back home at the end of a forty mile bike ride (long but not overly long by my standards) and lay down on the floor to cool off. That's when I noticed the faint but distinct smell of ammonia deep in my nose. I thought it might be my sweat but I couldn't smell the ammonia on my skin anywhere and when I did a "taste test" on my arm I only tasted regular salty sweat. It was when I held my head away from everything else that I smelled the ammonia. The smell really did seem to be coming from within my nose itself. As other people here reported, the odor disappeared after five minutes or so.

I was curious and decided to look on the Internet for more information and was pretty much surprised when the exact subject of my question came up right away on a search. I guess it's a pretty common thing but was the first time for me. One thing that was out of the ordinary on my ride today was that I forgot to bring my water bottle(s) along. I've never done that before. I stopped a couple times and bought drinks (Gatorade) so I did have liquid along the way but I wonder if that's part of the explanation. I definitely prefer water while I'm riding. Also, I seemed a little more worn out than usual at the end. I guess that could be related to the ammonia thing based on some other people's posts above.

As an Exercise Physiologist and a sports fitness specialist for over 30 years I can add to this forum by saying: Basically when you exercise within a level that is above your normal difficulty level, you will produce Lactic Acid as a by product of exercised muscles (don't really know what 'skeletal muscle' is referring to?) Depending on individual diet and melanine levels, kidney function, Liver and health behaviours (smoker, Drinker etc) but regardless, the Amonia smell is this by product of exercised muscles and sugars burnt and used within exercised muscles etc..ie Oxygen in, combined with blood sugar (or lack of it) mixed with personal electrolyte levels, exercised muscle blood, output carbon D = Odor. Re:Ammonia smell after exercise Reply to this message
I have the same exact issue. I'm a 30-year old female and I exercise 10+hrs per week. I never notice the smell externally from my sweat, but it's a smell I experience after a hard cardio session, and it's when I breathe in deeply through my nose. It's good to know I'm not the only one; however, I still don't have a clue as to what's causing it or if I should be concerned.

My sweat usually always smells like ammonia... so what you're saying is that this isn't necessarily because I'm a smoker? If I wasn't a smoker, my sweat might very smell like ammonia?

Look at this link for a good explanation. Most of us are dehydrated from caffeine and alcohol intake or simply not enough water. http://www.runnersworld.co.uk/news/article.asp?UAN =2029

Re:Ammonia smell after exercise Reply to this message
Drink a lot of water while exercising. Water is used in your body's metabolism/energy production. It's also used to sweat and by your kidneys to filter out toxins in your blood. The easier time your kidneys have in filtering toxins the less likely your body is to switch to your lungs and skin to detoxify.

Your body's metabolism is a complete system, like a car with a hundred different fuels. If it lacks one "fuel" like oxygen, water, minerals, nutrients, etc. it won't function efficiently or properly. It has the ability to cope with stresses, such as detoxifying through your breath and skin, but you don't want that, so it's best to avoid those stresses by making sure you're not low on any of your body's requirements.

I have this happen as well. I was told that it is improper breathing that causes this smell. If you breath shallow when exercising this can happen. Make a point of taking deep breaths, engaging you stomach. I find that the smell goes away when you breath fully.

HI Pam Hinton....

I found what you had to say very informative. Especially the part about the brains inability to process the excessive ammonia during extensive prolonged exercise. This could also be why after I work out my brain feels fuzzy ? What can I do to stop this from happening ?

See this article from cyclingnews.com/fitness:

Sweat smells like ammonia
I seem especially troubled by the heat this year, and my sweat volume is far greater and it smells overwhelmingly of ammonia. On the way home from a ride the car reeks like I've spilled an entire bottle of ammonia. This is all new this summer. No changes in diet or training. Would you have any ideas on the cause of this? By the way, my power seems way down. Thanks.

James Bailey

Pam Hinton replies

James,

Well, your sweat smells like ammonia because it contains ammonia. Why the sudden change in odor? If your training and diet haven't changed, I don't have any idea. You may be wondering how ammonia gets into sweat. I can answer that question. Ammonia is produced in skeletal muscle during prolonged exercise, enters the blood stream, and is secreted by the sweat glands.

Ammonia is generated in skeletal muscle as a byproduct of adenosine triphosphate (ATP) breakdown into adenosine monophosphate (AMP) and inorganic phosphate. During high-intensity exercise, the rate of ATP consumption exceeds ATP production and AMP begins to accumulate in the cell. Ammonia is released from the excess AMP by the enzyme, AMP deaminase. During prolonged, exhaustive exercise, skeletal muscle generates ammonia from oxidation of branch chain amino acids (BCAAs) to make ATP. In the process, the amino group is removed from the BCAA, producing ammonia.

Elevated ammonia within the skeletal muscle and blood negatively affect performance. Neuromuscular function is impaired by ammonia, leading to local muscle fatigue. Ammonia can cross the blood-brain barrier. So it accumulates in the brain when blood levels are high. The brain's capacity to get rid of ammonia is adequate for short-term maximal exercise, but it is overwhelmed during prolonged, exhaustive exercise. Abnormally high levels of ammonia in the brain can disrupt normal neurotransmitter function.

Ammonia depletes the excitatory neurotransmitters, ...

No I still haven't figured out what is causing this. There is so much to read on the internet regarding ammonia smells, but it constantly refers to ammonia smelling sweat. My sweat doesn't smell (other than the normal sweaty smell...LOL)...Have you found any more information on this ?

Re:Ammonia smell after exercise Reply to this message
Common issue with a lot of people, myself included. Our skin is our largest organ and it dissipates heat sweat liqids etc etc. Basically, the ammonia smell is our body detoxing itself thru sweat. It does not mean your liver/kidneys are failing, unless you get the ammonia smell without exercise, where the skin acts as a third kidney. After exercise it is normal enough for our sweat to contain toxins. Axiomatically, we should be drinking at least 2 lt of good clean water per day, more with heavy exercise.
