| Same experience. My parents told me about a Dunlop latex bed they bought in 1965. Said it never packed down, and was soft, cushy and supportive. My wife and I bought one from a company online called Habitat Furnishings, http://www.habitatfutons.com is their strange web address. They gave us free latex pillows too. Awesome, and the price was I think around $1700, and it came rolled up in some vacuum packaged deal, UPS to the door. We love it, and we got our son one as well. Neighbors and friends try it and they order them too. |

My Dad got a latex mattress around 1958 to relieve back aches. As I recall it was Donlap Goodyear. The price was about $88 (yeah, cokes were 5 cents in those days as was a pack of chewing gum, and candy bar, and a newspaper).
When he was dying in the hospital ~ 2007, I went to his house and found a mattress in one room on the floor. It was his goodyear mattress ~ 4 " thick just on the floor with no box of springs or anything under it. It might be called a "topper" today. It had no wool, cotton or anything else added to it. That mattress felt both firm and soft at the same time! Though I have in recent years felt uncomfortable on a number of mattresses, I was very comfortable on that old latex mattress. I did not see any depressions in it for body shapes or fat butts, though both of my parents were light weight thin -- probably why they lived into their 90's independently in their home.
Now I intend to buy the same kind of thing, not this new Talalay latex, but the old faithful. It is called Dunlop, Dunlap or something like that. |

....After over 5 years we lament having to sleep anywhere else, still strongly supporting this mattress whenever conversation turns near.
Contrary to some claims, I can see a small depression after 5 years (perhaps 1/8th inch for a 210 lbs guy), but notice no difference in sleeping comfort. Compared to a normal spring mattress I believe this is considered "no wear", but in absolute terms there is some wear.
In my case I purchased the "ULTRA PLUSH" at Mattresses.net (http://mattresses.net) for $1295 delivered to PA (now a couple hundred more expensive). I am happy to see the URL has not changed in 5 years. The company is still there, with the same good products. My only comment about this purchase was that they were very serious about curb side delivery - I could not even get the driver to help me lug it inside for $100. My second choice at the time was a FloBads 10-1/2" Posture Zone Select "http://www.flobeds.com/l atex", but that model at $1,720 delivered is not longer there. It is possible there are others that might be as good these days, but I still maintain you will not go wrong with these.
Why do I write so much: I love the mattress. Payback. |

To start: I have no relation to any part of the mattress industry, I am just a customer.
I spent a couple dozen hours researching over a couple months back in 2003, and my conclusion was that the Talalay synthetic latex process yields excellent mattresses. I read all the info on mattresses, mattress buying, and testimonials I could find.
In general, I suspect that the latex mattresses will vary in quality, and I'd also expect some places will cut manufacturing corners since you can't see inside. Even worse, sitting or laying on a mattress for 5-20 minutes is misleading rather than helpful (it's harder than buying a car). All this is why mattress selling is a great place for salesmen to sweet talk you. This may explain some customer's bad experiences.
Latex based mattresses are cleaner since they have no open space inside to collect "stuff", and they naturally provide a consistent level of support across the surface (the objective of springs). As long as good latex is used so they hold the shape, and have a decent wool quilting surface to let your skin breath, I can't see how any spring mattress can compete.
So how did I make out?
In the end I bought a california king via the internet, feeling that I could trust a specific online provider over a slick salesman since I could research in great deal. I certainly got a much better price than I could find in stores. Moreover, I am convinced this is just about as good a mattress as you will find with less chance a slick salesman is going to take me for a ride.
Despite me being the one with the "bad back", once we got it and aired it out (in a few days residual manufacturing chemical smells were gone) my wife was the one talking more about how much she loved it. She slept better, and felt better, realizing that she had not been not sleeping well, and that she previously had back pains she did not notice before (noticeable now because they were missing).
After over 5 years we lament having to sleep anywh ... |

| I purchased a top of the line nature rest? full latex mattress about 2 years ago. i thought it would be good for my back problems. It is very comfortable to rest on (whilst you awake), but i find it really hard to roll over when im sleeping, often having to wake up, roll over, go back to sleep. I also find it really hot.!! I wasnt told about this until i asked if it was a problem and was told that seems i live in a cold climate-canberra- it should be ok. Its not. Even in the cold weather, i often have to move places to get to a cooler bit - and im generally a cold sleeper. I thought it would be great , but, im not really happy with it. If some one offered me a decent amount for it i would sell it and try something else. And I have latex pillow which are really comfortable on the latex mattress but a bit too soft on a 'normal' mattress. Hope this helps. |

| We paid over $2000 for a latex mattress from Beds for Backs. It was fine for about six months and then it started to form our body shapes. After that no matter how often we turned or rotated it, it became a torture chamber to sleep on. Following that ordeal we purchased a Sealy with a pillow top. Once we got it home it felt much harder than the display model so we put a latex throw over on it to ease the joints. It ( the throw over ) also had a short life span before forming hollows. In short, KEEP AWAY FROM LATEX, and read all the issues re cheap imported latex using fillers. |

I actually like the feel of the latex mattress as they mould to your shape although I don't have one.
I do have a latex pillow and love it. I used to wake with a really bad neck at least once a month. I've had my new pillow now for a couple of years and have woken with sore neck since then probably 3 or 4 times.
Good luck whatever you decide but I'd love to know what you think of it if you do end up buying one.

| Hello, anyone like to comment on the pro's and or con's of a Latex mattress. Thinking of buying one. I do prefer a softer bed. Also wake up very stiff in the morning due to little or no movement at night. |
