| I was tooken off of birth control because of my blood pressure due to birth control. They put me on the depo in march of 08 and i have had about 3-4 shots. I also get headaches and I have the weighgain. With the weightgain is scary because im already a heavyset person as it is. I cant afford to not take any form of birthcontrol because it helps me with cycle. I missed so much school because of my cycle it was a miricle i passed. I just dont know what to do! I also heard that if you stay on the shot for so many years you may not be able to have children i dont know thats true or not. Please someone help me. |

I had the deprovera shot back in 2002 when i was 15 years old, i thought it would be the best method of birth control for me as i definitly didnt want to get pregnant. It was the worst desision i could have made!.
I only had one shot when i began to have extreme depression and suicidle thoughts, needless to say i never went back for another, after the 3 months when the shot should have worn off i begun bleeding. At first it was a normal period lasting 5 days but then 3 days after my period had finished i began bleeding a dark reddy brown tar like substance this would continue eveyday till towards the end of my cycle when eventually my period would begin again.Along side this i suffered debilitating cramps thoughout my cycle!! This lasted from jan 2003 to dec 2003, i never visited my doctor as i was terrified they would resort to hyst *** omy, I was so ill that i lost loads of time off school and eventually i was dismissed, All i could do was sleep and cry it was terrible!.
My boyriend stayed with me despite us being only 16 and lack of sex, i suppose he helped me get through it.
Once my bleeding had stopped i felt confident enough to go on the pill and get my life back, but the fact that i could have irreversable damage still lingered, although i didnt want any children for along time, i knew that oneday i wanted to be a mother.
Luckily though god sent me a gift, we descovered i was pregnant april 2005. Although our daughter was unplanned and came as a huge surprise i feel VERY lucky to have her.
my partner and i have been together for 7 years now and i thankgod every day for the devotion my partner has shown me and the beautiful daughter we have despite everything.
I often wonder though whether my pregnancy was just a 'miracle' and that in the future when we try for another we will have problems??
please can anyone tell me what my chances for infertility are? would they have noticed any issues with my uterus or ovaries when i was pregnant? |

| I took depo in 1991/2 and was on it for a year. My GYN recomended it to me after suffering from heavey periods and period pain which will sometimes cause me to faint. I was 67kg when i started depo and gained 40kg+ over that year, i never went back to that GYN as he never told me the side affects. We are now in 2008 and i am still battling to loose the wait, i have now joined weight watchers and have been their now about 10weeks, i have lost .5kg over the 10 weeks and that is very hard to swallow when you sit in the meetings and listen how someone lost 1-3kg the week and you just gain. I have also joined the gym last week and when i went to weigh in on saturday i picked up 1.8kg. Before i went on depo provera i lost 40kg with a weightloss programme, as soon as i saw i was gaining weight i started the same programe but this time it did not work, i could not even lose 1kg. Every time i go to the doctors complaining about my weight they say it is because i don't excercise and it is not the depo because it is out of my system, sorry i don't believe that, otherwise i would not have had this problem trying to lose the weight. I hope you are sucessfull and are able to have another child, unfortunately we can't have kids. |

this is my story
I have only had three injections and since those three injections I have transformed into a she devil.
These injections have changed my moods to where I get so violent that I want to kill my partner’s friends. I have to go to hypnotist to try and take control of my anger.
I have put on so much weight; my beautiful long blonde hair has turned to slept end hell. I have turned into an alcoholic so that I can be me, a once happy go getter. I have warned people don’t do it. My relationship is almost at an end.
This is like taking poison, and for what, not to have children. I would rather have children and being awake at night, my wage going on the child then living this nightmare of hell.
I have liver damage, my hands shake. I need this poison to leave my body so that I can get control of my life.
And keep warning people don’t do it |

Hi. I am 44 years old and I have been on Depo for 10 years. I have had many of the symptoms many you have had, hair loss, headaches, neck and back stiffness, lack of libido, dry skin, insomnia, heart palpatations, etc. I stayed on the shot because of one reason, it was the only thing that helped with my suicidal depressions.
I tried to get off Depo once before, and my depressions came back. I decided I would rather have 10 good years of my life and perhaps lose ten years then to have no good years at all.
On Depo, not only did my depressions and PMDD go away, I became more confident, and not such a doormat. I became a different person in a way, I was able to enjoy life, hike, ride motorcycles, camp swim, buy a house, move ON!
One day I was hiking, and a pain shot up my leg when I jumped over a creek. My leg was cramping badly and would not cease. I went to a chiropractor who diagnosed me with sciatica and is now treating me, but I still have problems walking.
I started to have leg cramps, twitching muscles, tingling in my fingers and aching all over. It scared me, so I cancelled my shot.
I decided to go to a different MD doctor, a female, to get a bone density test and a check up to find out whats wrong with me. I have to wait a week to see her.
I have been off the shot 3 weeks. I went to see my psych two weeks ago, and she gave me Zoloft. She said the anti depressant takes 3 weeks to work and she doesn't want to take any chances.
I have been going through Depo withdrawals. I ache all over, have numbness sensitivity and creepy crawlies, and malaise. My left leg and foot hurt all the time, and I can't feel my right toes. I am terrified I will turn back into that weak little crybaby I was for so many years, in and out of mental hospitals. Depo gave me 10 good years, now it may be time to pay the piper. I think I made a deal with the devil and I am hoping with all my heart I won't have to go to hell for it.~~~Liandre |

I've had two shot of Depo and have found it to be the best contraceptive I've tried. When I had my first shot my period lasted for 10 day and that is the only problem I've had on it. I am truely sorry to read all these horror stories, but I don't think it is sound to advise that nobody use this. For a lot of women it suits them just fine. For me, I have gained maybe 4 pounds, but I might have done that anyway and I gained far more on the pill. I no longer have fluid retention issues and I no longer suffer from breast tenderness, which I did for 3 weeks out of 4 even off the pill. I have bipolar 2 and found my moods have been more stable without the flucuations in my hormones each month. I know that for some of you the side effects are very real, but you should always educate yourself before taking any drug - if you can post your complaints on the net then you could have researched Depo before you had your first shot and made an informed decision.
By the way, I work in a women's clinic and the vast majority of patients getting Depo shots are very happy with it. I would say around 5 percent of the women I deal with have problems - usually weight gain or irregular bleeding. Often our biggest problem is getting women to take a break every couple of years (it really shouldn't be used for more than 2 years continuously).
Sorry, I can see this message board is more for "horror" stories but I thought it should be balanced with the other side. After all, you'll always find more horror stories than good ones - those that are happy with it are not all that likely to have any reason to post to boards such as this. |

| -continued- 3 months after he was born I returned to the operating table to have 5-6 cysts removed. After this I was so frustrated with the constant unknowns with the doctors I did not go back and just continued to take 15mg of norethridrone (aygestin- used to treat endo) and a very large amount of nutritional supplements. A regimen I searched online for and stayed on for a little over a year. I still had pain, just no period which helped. At least I hoped. This was Jan 2005-Nov 2007. Although I knew I was still very ill from what I was feeling I would not go to the doctor. They knew less then I did about this disease and they just kept me chemically medicated. By Nov 2005 I ended up in the ER with a 17cm cyst. It was there for a long time they said. No duh, I knew something was wrong and I did not want anymore surgeries because as it took the cysts away, they would just return. What type of life can you live having surgery every 6 months. Anyway, I had to have this cyst removed but this time it was major surgery and I had (still don't have) no insurance. Guess what they put me on after the surgery- yup the depo shot. She told me if I did not do something it would get worse and it would be the best thing for me.  Well it is months later and cost me $20,000 (which I have not started paying yet) and I have more cysts since March. I have been in more pain since this last surgery and I am almost positive it is from the large amount of scar tissue I have from all the surgeries I have had. So I am writing you because I strongly believe that shot did this to me and after researching it I want to help get this off the market. My life has been hell and I never had any problems with my cycle before then. In fact while my friends were taking pamprin and motrin, I was not. I never cramped at all. My family and I have suffered a great deal due this drug. I can use all the help possible because I am not even sure where to start. |

| I feel we need to start a class action lawsuit against Pfizer, and they need to get this poison off the market. I think with many women we can prove it is harmful and not just to your bones. Here is my story- In Feb 2001, around 2 months after my first son was born I took this shot for birth control. I received 3 shots and then discontinued due to a long distance move (could not find a doctor in time to renew the shot as I moved when it was due). Immediately I began having side effects. As soon as I received health insurance I returned to my gyn complaining of many problems I never had before, mainly the mood swings and the painful heavy periods. She prescribed Zoloft to be taken 2 weeks into my cycle and bextra (taken off market due to fatal side effects). I had a pap smear done which I found out several months later was abnormal and I had to return for another one. Well during that year 2002-3 I had been suffering severely during ovulation and my period. So when I went back I told them again and they suggested I may have endometriosis. I was not diagnosed with it though. A short time after that I returned and from that year on I have been in and out of the hospital as well as the doctors offices. After an emergency room visit I found out I had a 3cm cyst on my left ovary. I played the waiting game to see if it would shrink and go away. It never did and I wound up in surgery to have it removed because it moved into my fallopian tube. After this surgery it was confirmed that I had endometriosis and was officially diagnosed. That explained all the pain I had been in. This was Feb. 2004. In Sept 2004 I returned to have more cysts removed and while inside me they discovered my intestines were attached to my uterus, again explaining the pain I was in. After being on a one month lupron shot I finally became pregnant with my second son. This was the healthiest time for me in the last 6 years. -Continued- |

| Wow. I have a severly overweight friend who I just assumed didn't exercise and ate too much. She recently told me she use to take the shots. When she started she was 125lbs and now she's 280lbs! I started looking into it. OMG!! This is horrible. I will keep you all in my prayers! |

I have been reading all horror stories.... and just have to give me 2 cents........
I started on this in 1988, before approved for birth control, as an alternative to a hysterecomy. I have menorrhagia. I had a D & C - no help. I bled for 4 yrs solid, non stop. At age 28, the depo sounded like a better alternative than major surgery to remove everything.
I did gain a little weight, but not enough to be a concern, and no other side effects.
In 2007, I was diagnsoed with Osteopenia and had to increase my calcium and Vit D intake x 3 of normal.
Now here I am in 2008, at age 48 and just went thru breast cancer screening and surgical biopsies. I have ATD (A Typical Ductal Playsia) caused by the depo injections. They were able to remove all the abnornal cell growth and am now on Evista and breast exam (mams) every 6 mos for the next 5 yrs as the ATD is a permanent BC condition and I am at a high risk.
Depo contains 2 receptors that feed on the developement of BC cells.
After doing some more research, I am noticing my hair loss, knee or joint, aches may also be caused by Depo.
I also have had several cysts removed surgically.
At the time I started in the Depo, no one had a clue what the long terms effects are. It appears from this forum and my own research, there are too many to count. I have been on this so long, adapted to things not knowint it was a side effect or area of concern.
For myself, I am off the Depo as of July 2008, and will be getting the Ablation procedure soon. This option did not exist when I was yuonger. I also have to deal with the side effect of Evista as well. So far, I have frequent headaches and restless leg syndrom, confirmed by my dr as a known side effects. I have not been on it long enough to experience hot flases and some of the other stated side effect. Maybe I will get lucky :)
Either way ladies of all ages....... PLEASE SAVE YOURSELF AND DO NOT GET DEPO INJECTIONS. This drug should be takem off the market. Thanks for listening. |

| Wow! You are right on the mark! This horrible poison has totally compromised my life. I am not awaiting a D & C to see if I have Endometrial Cancer, A Endoscopy to see what these powerful synthetic hormones did to my stomach and a thyroid cyst and that's not symptamatic. I have heard of women dying from this...I can only pray to God I won't be another statistic to putting my trust in my OBGYN that said "I would be a good candidate" for this DEADLY drug. I sympathize with you COMPLETELY! |

| I agree with the previous poster...This is definitely not the place to be judgemental and say things like "next time ask questions." Being the suspicious type,I asked several questions before my ob/gyn gave me my first shot:how much weight will i gain?will i get horribly moody?can i become depressed or even bipolar?etc, etc.I was told i probably wouldn't gain weight because i was so thin to begin with and a vegatarian at that!as for the depression,DR said no problem there because I didn't have a history of depression and it doesn't run in my family.I never had any reason to doubt the doc. And for 4 whole years i had no side effects whatsoever...and then at the end, they just crept up on me(weight gain, depression, horrible moodiness). Of course, every woman is unique and will react differently to depo...we are all aware of that. But you never know,if you had gotten just one more shot, you could've been just like us...so please don't trivialize others' pain and hopelessness. Some women genuinely feel this shot has ruined there lives.I'm glad you're not one of them. |

"if you understood and were aware of all the side effects than you wouldn't be crying about what the shot has done to you"
QUOTED FROM A PREVIOUS POSTER...
Yeahhh... well, I must say, after what I've been through - you'd be crying too. I did my research, asked tons of questions, even saw the warnings on the internet saying i might gain a little weight. The doctor said not likely for me, considering I had a 14.7 % body fat and worked out intensely for about 2 - 3 hours a day as a competitive swimmer... Even a small weight gain would have been fine with me (ten, fifteen pounds)- but not 50 lbs in two months. I couldn't even fit my feet into the same shoes. I had to buy all new everything.
Come back and let me know how you feel after waking up to a reflection in the mirror of a person that is a complete stranger... Physically AND emotionally. Thanks. |

| For the handful of you who had a successful experience with Depo - lucky you. This is not a matter of a few pi$$y women who are upset over the side effects of some birth control. This is about women who have lost their entire lives (and some even died) because their TRUSTED OBGYN said, "The Depo shot would be your best option!" And they believed them. I am one of those women. I took a Depo injection at age 20 in 2004. That makes me 24 now... And I am still battling the weight, depression, anxiety, and thyroid damage that shot did to my body. Based on the trusted advice of my doctor and many questions about side effects, I accepted that I was the 'right candidate' for Depo. This stuff is POISON in the wrong body. & they have no way of knowing who will and won't experience an adverse reaction. Many meds are this way, however, most of them do not share the widespread horror stories that Depo has earned to it's reputation. PLEASE don't do it. If you're considering Depo as an option, please know there are other options and none of them have the same risk that Depo does. I implore that anyone considering Depo PLEASE not go through with it. ------ My personal experience... At 20, full time college student and working full time, the thought of not remembering my pill at the same time each day sounded awesome. And as a competitive swimmer, not having a period was a definite advantage. No feminine prod at competitions or bloating decreasing my speed??!! Heaven. Or so my doctor described, and I anticipated. With ONE shot... I gained 30 pounds the first 30 days after injection and an ADDITIONAL 20 pounds the next 30 days. Then I started experiencing other issues, leading me to my regular doctor. He was horrified at what Depo had done to my body, inside and out. I went from a 5'10" 130 pound swimmer to a 180 pound weakling who was constantly ill... Not just physically. I was emotionally a mess, too. I am still struggling with diet & exercise to shed the weight after 4 years |

to all the successful depo users.. do NOT down play these effects because you were one of the MINUTE few who did not experience the horror. true horror. shut your pie hole if you don't get it. horror. the depo is evil period. did you know they prescribed it to dogs but took it off the market because they were getting cancer. I weighed 178 when i started taking the depo bled for three months heavily then next shot gained 44 lbs in six wks. now two years later i finally am losing the weight and it is just falling off.. i did everything worked out dieted breastfed my child walked i couldn't lose one pound. i looked 6 months preg. I never saw any thing that said horrific things like 70percent of all users gain weight horrid mood swings no libido aches and pains.. i have lost 34 lbs in four months. and for 8 months after i stopped taking depo i had two periods a month. bad bad bad stuff.
while i was on it and messed up i took zoloft because i thought i was depressed and i found out the combo causes possible haullicinations and distortions of reality.. THANKS PFIZER! |

| I took depo when I was 23 for 3years. I was very weak, moody, and I had headaches. I lost my libido almost completely. Now, at 29, I decided to go on it again because I did not want to get my period. This time I was not so lucky. The OBGYN told me that the side effects will be different for eeveryone and since I had a baby since the last time I was on it that it would be different, better or worse. Well, I was in shape and 130lbs. Now, three months later, I am 150lbs. I got boils by my ears and on my face. I have had cystic acne since the week after the injection. I never had pimples, when I was a teenager, never as an adult. People were asking me what happened and thought my job was stressing me out causing me to get overweight and break out beyond my control. I had cystic pimples over pimples that felt like marbles under my skin on my nose, cheeks, forhead, and chin. The boils I developed by my ears are still going away. I had the shot in march and it is now july. I only had one shot and never went back for my june shot. I have spotted in the last month, but no period. It took me 3months to get my period when I got off it years ago and I got pregnant after one try only 6months after getting off of it. However, this time, depo seems to have affected me completely different this time. I started taking ADHD pills toward the end to just stay awake for work because I was and am fat as ever, cranky, broken out, and completely exhausted. I am hoping it does not take too long for me to lose the weight. I have been working out for 40minutes a day and have only lost 2lbs. Usually, I lose weight very quickly after dieting and exercising. My skin is clearing up but I have scars from the first 3months of severe acne. I would never recommend depo to anyone. I am depressed and I am a mother. My daughter needs me to be alert, happy, and energetic. I hope I can get pregnant one day again!!! |

| Hello! I wanted to let you know that in my opinion you don't need to let your daughter take this shot! I firmly believe that all her symptoms are a result of this medication. The doctors have all assured me of the same thing...that the Depo has nothing to do with any of my symptoms. I started the shot in Feb-Mar of 2004. I took my last shot in Dec of 2007. While I was on the shot the only side effects I had was massive weight gain and around the time I was due for my next shot I would start getting headaches and they would go away once I was able to get my next shot. However, the side effects of withdrawling this medication out of my system have been horrible. I was due to take the shot again in March of 2008 so I am assuming that my body has been withdrawling since then. All of the sudden one day I became extremely naseaus. I was in that state all day long and if I ate it made me feel worse. I also started getting headaches one day after another. While the naseau was going on I went to the doctor. They said they thought it was my gallbladder and I have since been to the emergency room and had x-rays, bloodwork, ultrasounds on my gallbladder, kidneys, liver, etc. I was told my gallbladder and all other organs looked fine. I was then referred to a Gastro doctor who put me on Prevacid for the naseau and ran more tests on me as well. Needless to say they can't find anything wrong with me. I got on this webiste and discovered that many other people have been noticing the same symptoms as me. I have also not had one period at all, no spotting, no bleeding at all for over four years. It doesn't matter what any docotor says to me...I know that's not the way a women's body was designed to function. Time will only tell what damage has been done to my body from the use of this medicine. It has also come to light that you shouldn't use Depo for long periods of time because of bone density loss. I now have to have that test done at the request of my Gyno. |

Hi all...
Wow Jeanette, 5 years is so long! Have you asked you doc about it?
I'm 29 & I've been on depo for a couple of years, never experienced any negative side effects nor did I ever get a period or spotting. I decided not to continue the shots in April this year when I was due, in preference for the contraceptive pill as I believe it takes less time to leave your system in case I ever want to conceive another child. GP prescribed Primolut N to induce a bleed in order to begin oral contraceptives - it is now 10 days after the final tablet & still nothing. I have read many people say it took approx 6 months to cycle to start again, but just wondering if this Primolut N should override this? Has anybody else been in this situation? NEVER thought I'd be wishing for my period!!! |

| As for me i had my very first depo provera injection the beginning of 2003 then my second one which was my last one in july 2003.It really sucks i was only told by the dr that i would put on weight in which i did and that the injection would last 3 months at a time.I stopped the injection because i decided i didn't want it anymore and i have never had my periods again and it is now 5 years ago almost.Deep down i know there is probably something wrong but im not sure.Did anyone else go that long with their periods not coming back? |
