| Hi, I am only answering this because I used to have the same problem. I was diagnosed with anxiety and asthma at the same time so my suggestion is that you see your dr. |

Sorry, I meant to add the reason I asked questions regarding fill was so that we could understand your situation better and try and give feedback accordingly. |

You made a typo and said you were banded in 2007 but then said it's four weeks since you were banded.
This is an Australian forum although everyone is welcome but you need to be aware some things we refer to won't make sense and vice versa. For example we weigh in kilos not pounds.
Was there any fill put in your band at the time of surgery? Have you had your first post-op fill? |

| reflux medication is expensive but you can ask for the generic version whicj=h is alot cheaper and does the same thing-i am on losec and for the 1st time am taking them and no longer have that horrible heart burn, acid and vomit coming up in my throat when i ly down at nite-also realized that i can not eat in bed or i will suffer all nite-scoffed down a small packet of chips the other day and sufferd all nite wir=th excruciating pain and acid coming up all nite-i actually went to a ent specialist because since being banded my throat has felt sore and restricted and i was sure that i had some form of maybe cancer as i used to be a smoker for 30 yrs-gave up 4 yrs ago-he looked down my throat and said it was all fine but that the acid reflux was coming up into my throat and that i really needed to religiously take my medication-well presto since i have been taking it for 10 day si no longer suffer the pain-what a relief and what a idiot i was to not listen b4 hand and to suffer for so long-reflux is one of the negatives of being banded but it sure doesnt take away from my loss of 43 kilos in 15 months-goal weight and now gone from size 18 to size 19 |

Hi Mela
I agree that it might be caused by stress. When my father died, for a month later I literally had a pain in my heart. I told a psychiatrist about this and he showed me some relaxation breathing techniques, when I left his office I no longer had the pain in my heart and when it did happen from time to time I just did the breathing technique again.
Just take some time out, even play some relaxing music and focus on your breathing, I take a deep breath in through the nose and breath out threw my mouth. Hope it helps.
I'm sorry to hear about your loss. |

| can anyone shed some light on this problem. i have an uncomfortable feeling, like constriction I guess, near my lower throat most of the day, each day. I'm wondering whether stress is causing it. I have just lost my mother in thelast couple of weeks. any suggestions on how to relieve that sensation? thanks, Mela |

I went on Somac about 3 weeks ago.. OMG.. what I life saver.
I never knew I was in so much pain until I had taken Somac for the first time.
I have been banded for over one year, and a few fills in I noticed heartburn got really bad and took Rennie or Mylanta to control it, and a few times I woke up at night coughing for my life like I was choking to death. I told my surgeon and he insisted its because I have too much fill. ( I had heartburn pre-surgery, but I thought that was just because of my size)
In passing one day I mentioned to my GP that I have heartburn "all the time" so he prescribed me Somac, its bloomin expensive, but it works - If I miss one tablet I am in a world of pain in 24hrs.
I also found out that my mum is on the same medication! - so maybe its a little more intricate than just the band, it could be heriditary!? |

| I've been banded since July 2006 and I've had these exact problems. This hideous brown acid tasting stuff coming up, not able to eat or drink. I finally gave up and had them to take all the fluid out of my band and everything was fine for about 4 months. Now I'm beginning to have the night coughs etc. again. It's really scary when you don't have the option of taking any more fluid out. I guess I will have to have my band completely removed, but am afraid of the cost. Any ideas? |

Hi Nanna, there are people who have problems and there are people who have a dream ride. I think mostly if you follow the rules you will be ok. That is not saying that the people who do have problems have not followed the rules. There are many threads (topics) on here. Just have a read thru any that interest you. I am also an older bandit. I have been banded for 18 months and lost 29 kgs. I am 56 soon.
Cheers

I am brand new at this game so not sure how it works. I have made the decision to have lap banding. Have only had my initial appointment so now have to have all the tests. My question is "does anyone have any other problems?" Obviously the reflux could be. I have it occasionally now. As I am older (59) it would be of interest if anyone older has any advice for me.

ditzer1085,
Have you ever had no fill at all in your band?? This is what I am contemplating next. My reflux is not as bad as yours and I had it worse pre-band so I'm used to it. I am reading on my surgeon's website something about "foreign body" issues and will be asking him about this when I see him mext month. |

| Shaz I should have said, it can be a signal that a bandster who has never experienced reflux prior to banding may have too much fill and removing some fill might stop the reflux. However it doesn't mean that every bandster that has reflux has it because of too much fill. Hope that makes sense. |

| I forgot to mention, last year I was booked to have a sleeve gastrectomy because my band wasn't working six months after the repositioning but because I have a few chronic illnesses I realised my body was too weak to have further weight loss surgery and I was prepared to live the rest of my life without obtaining restriction but now I have it. Weird I know but that's banded life, for me anyway. |

Nope, non banded people get reflux and night cough too. Before going onto the Somac I didn't have any restriction and was able to eat dinner plate size meals including steak with no problems and was suffering from reflux and night cough. The Somac has allowed me to have more fill in and as of last month I finally have restriction after nearly two years of not having any restriction at all, I've been banded nearly four years. I now have 9.5mls in a 9ml band, I've previously had 11mls in the 9ml band with no restriction although since then I have had my band repositioned. Even with good restriction now there is still nothing I cannot eat but only a bread and butter plate sized meal now and the scales are going downwards again.
There's another medication that does the same as Somac but I can't remember the name but whatever it is, it's quite common that it's prescribed to bandsters that had reflux prior to banding and Somac is often prescribed to bandsters who never had reflux before banding. |

I was led to believe that reflux and night cough was a sure fire sign of too much fill?

Hi pizza
Are you on medication yet for reflux? If so it could simply mean you just need medication to control the reflux rather than a drastic by-pass. I'll copy below a message I posted in response to someone who brought up the reflux topic on Sunday on General Chat. It may be of help to you.
Reposting:
Do as Linda suggests and see your doctor sooner rather than later because the reflux can burn the esophagus and do other nasty things. When I had it I saw my banding doctor rather than my G.P. because I felt he would be more experienced in banding related reflux. If you have the right level of fill that you're happy with i.e. not too tight that your frequently Pbing and not so loose that you can eat dinner plate size meals then you might not have to have any fill removed. Reflux doesn't necessarily mean the band has slipped which can be caused by frequent pbing, vomiting and purging to release a blockage, it can also slip for no apparent reason. He'll probably send you for some tests and if there's no problem with the tests he might just put you on Somac like I'm on or something similar to prevent reflux. Somac is also recommended when bandsters are on large doses of anti-inflammatories/NSAID s (non steroidal anti inflammatory drugs) to prevent the anti-inflammatories irritating and causing damage to the pouch.
Oh and by the way, if you go to bed and you wake up dry coughing and then continue dry coughing usually until morning with no sleep & end up with a croaky voice, that's known as Night Cough which is also a form of Reflux. I thought I had a cold but couldn't figure out why it was only causing me to cough all night for weeks on end with no other cold symptoms, eventually it was diagnosed by my banding doctor as Night Cough/Reflux. |

I was not getting results from my band. My doctor increased the fill and now I am getting reflux. For those of you that have not experienced it, it is terrifying. At least that is my experience. I awake 3+ times a night aspirating acids. It cuts off the airway and causes me to gasp for air for 30 seconds or more.
I am calling the doctor in the morning.
I am at a loss now however, as I really think I want the band removed and possibly do a bypass. Does anyone recommend the bypass procedure? Anyone ever heard of someone reversing the lap band and getting a by-pass? Will insurance cover this if I want to proceed? |
