You do have to declare your de' facto on your tax return in order to ensure the corerct thresholds are used for certain items (eg medicare levy/surcharge etc) but given those incoem levels and no kids I would not expect any change to your tax calculations.

Easier to just give them a call and ask them.

Your spouse is your husband or wife to whom you are legally married, or a person who lives with you on a genuine domestic basis as your husband or wife.

NOTE: Australian law concerning husband/wife of the SAME SEX as you may have changed, OR MAY NOT... ring and ask.

Both earning money, both need file own tax returns.

Each receives tax free threshold before tax becomes due, each has claims relative to their own.

Claims re dependency issues perhaps best sorted with an accountant...

Dependants and separate net income
You maintained a dependant if any of the following applied:

* you and your dependant lived in the same house
* you gave your dependant food, clothing and lodging, or
* you helped them to pay for their living, medical and educational costs.

If you had a spouse for the whole income year and your spouse worked at any time during the year, we still consider you to have maintained your spouse - as a dependant - for the whole income year.

We consider you to have maintained a dependant even if the two of you were temporarily separated, for example, due to holidays or because they were overseas.

If you maintained a dependant for only part of the year, you may need to adjust your claim.

individual or defacto tax return Reply to this message
Hi
Looking for some answers. My partner and I moved in with each other in Oct 2008. My Partner will earn $49000 this year and I will earn $32000 cos i resigned from work to continue my studies. We have no kids
1. Do we continue to submit an individual return or is there something else we have to do?
2. Do the income tax thresholds change?
3. Do we both get the $6000 tax free threshold?

thanks

dan
