That seems like a great idea, I'll have to look into it, thanks! maybe they were welcoming to you because of your large deposit sum..? I wonder if they would open an account for a say $1000.
Can you recommend any American banks? and do you know if there are any set up fees etc. many thanks

You are so right. The banks have a Converter on their websites but try to get the exchange rate they advertise within 15 minutes of you arriving there.I am aware that the rates fluctuate but not as much as I found out & they do not allow you to print the information.

The bank charge you a fee to do your business and clobber you with their exchage rate at the same time. I you bought a bank draft and try to get your money back because of changing circumstances they'll take you to the dry cleaner.

Howzit Folks?

I've found that the banks screw you big time. I transfer money all over the world and use xe.com which consistemtly outperforms the banks. Even if you don't use them it is worthwhile comparing with your bank rate.

Cheers
Aztrix

I have transferred large amounts of $A to US$ (>$A150k) recently to purchase property in the US. You need to open a US bank account using your passport. Get the US banks routing (ABA) number (usually 9 digit number). Then walk into your aussie bank, and give them the routing number of the US bank, and the amount to be transferred. They will give you the rate and make the transfer. I highly recommend using direct bank-bank transfers rather than using a third party as you will get the best rate.

Interbank transfer?? These usually happen much closer to the spot rate.

I'm assuming you don't intend to carry a hundred Gs out in cash :)

I've been thinking about changing AUS dollars into US dollars - when you get over the hundred thousand dollar range, surely you don't use people like Travelex? What is the cheapest way to exchange lots of Australian money to foreign currency?
