Re:Aussie vs Pound Reply to this message
The Aussie is like a monicker for the gold & copper price, hence the volatility, and is also part of the "high interest rate" dollar block with their associated negative trade balances. It suffers badly during "risk aversion" sentiment swings in the market.

Re:Aussie vs Pound Reply to this message
I think the apparent “strength” of the AUD over the USD is actually largely the other way around – i.e. the USD has been consistently weakening for some time against virtually all major currencies (the Euro and pound have also had record highs vs the USD in recent times). As far as I can see the main reason for the strengthening of the pound vs the AUD in the first half of this year was due to 5 interest rate rises in the UK in 9 months – higher interests rates in a country mean more people want the currency. As you may have noticed though, the AUD has made a huge comeback vs the pound over the past couple of weeks. This seems to be because the interest rate outlook in the UK has done an about turn – another rate rise was widely anticipated before year end, but due to the current credit crisis it’s now widely expected that the UK will cut interest rates in October.

All of which is a bit of a disappointment to me, as I’m moving from the UK to Oz in January, and will be taking a reasonable sum of pounds with me. Any sign of an interest rate cut in Oz?

Yeah, they go on how strong the aussie $ is against the greenback.. but the pound has pulled our pants down and certainly unsure why, but like you said, it must be the pound that's doing the hard work.

Re:Aussie vs Pound Reply to this message
Hi Marty
Can't work it out either. I just had 4 trades closed out ($600) cause I thought it had bottomed. It's the lowest in well over 12 months. With the AUD at a record 17 yr high, I guess it's just too strong so there must be something happening on the GBP side. hopefully someone else will put in their 2 bobs worth to give us the reason

I'm no economist, so please explain why the Aussie dollar is being killed by the English pound? It's dropped like a rock over recently..
