Its hard to understand what the problem really is, I have found that racisim always seems to be a two edged sword. I am a NZ Maori and grew up at a time of strong racial prejudice, but as an adult its never been a problem, at least not to my face, maybe behind my back, dont know dont care. As a child, youngster and young adult, it was tough, but from the mature age of 34 there has never been a problem.
I came to Australia in 1970 and spent 5 years in the USA and Europe the only abuse I ever had was at home, good old Kiwi.
Asians seem to want to be accepted very quickly, even though they are the strongest Racists of all. I remember the Italians and Greeks they had to wait for some time to be assimilated but who notices them now, none of us.
The comments about the preference for Americans and English, for goodness sake how silly can we be. The Yanks saved Australia WW 11 and they are the natural allies now, personally I thank them for helping us. Without them we would likely be under a real yoke now, and the world would be very different.
The new world USA, Canada, Australia and NZ are all Caucasian settled territories settled from the UK mainly, but we in ANZ are isolated from our natural allies by distance. If WW3 should eventuate, centred in Asia how vulnerable will we be? Our countries and our products will v@nishh into the Asian swarm and we will have no say.
Racism is the cry that follows the Caucasian, but lets be honest, I am glad we never had the French, Sp@nish, Dutch etc; we would all be in the third world complex now working for pennies.
Dont throw the colored card I know it well, its always the losers of my race who cry foul, those who assimilated say thanks, but now what can we take off you Pakeha's.
Whats wrong with that Mr. India man or Indian boy and girl, just do the same take back what you think those whities are taking of you, is berry good moit, the aussies may whinge but who cares?

I been to the moon these few days because Jing just got me that 2 carat sparkler. hehe. Now that is what you call a good bloke hehe. I agree with nundeekasen, actually I might skip cooking and get some Indian take away for my man. He loves that butter chicken with nan. Anyway I do agree as well that Indian students are more superior than brainless rednecks. Doesn't take much thinking that if they can study here in our university they must be very smart. Also if they can afford to study they are from good families that are monogamous and have the ability to earn and save for their children's education. In other words responsible parents of good breeding. I read somewhere that infidelity, womanizing, drug addiction, excessive drinking and squandering, low intelligence and bad temper are all genetics. So you see ladies these young Indian students are good quality studs and worth breeding with hehe, just like my Chinese stud hehe. Got to get the curry, Jing is coming home from surgery soon bye.

What do you about the situation in South Africa. Have you ever suffered discrimination because your skin color was not white. People migrated to all the countries you mentioned, so no white man can make calim to it. People of color suffered because of ones like yourself with tunnel vision.Anyone other than white does not exist or seem to matter.

YES i agree with you 100%. Before these politicions and unionists start spreading rumours about a Chinese take over I suggest you go and visit China for a while and note the vast difference in the hospitality shown to visitors. Also if it was not for China our iron ore industry would grind to a halt. I have worked in this industry for the past 25 years and all I can say is if it wasn,t for the Chinese economy we would be near bankrupt.

I really hate to say this but I am starting to believe that Australia actually resembles America in the 1960's when Blacks were being lynched by the racist Ku Klux Klan thugs. During that period most Whites actually pretended that this problem didn't exist and the Police also couldn't be bothered.
Living in Australia today, one could be under the impression that it is very multicultural but however when you take a second look, most of the Asians and Indian faces in the streets are actually overseas students and not residents. This country is still a majority Caucasian country. It is not yet truly multicultural like the USA or UK where colored people have lived as residents for generations and cities have become cultural melting pots like New York.
Will this affect business with Asia? It will not really affect business as the Australian Government is very skilled at sending envoys over to Asia to declare that we are "Not racist" and to grovel and soothe things over. This happened many years ago when Pauline Hanson and John Howard were stirring up the Yellow Peril Stew. John Howard suddenly changed completely into the "good guy" and subsequently visited Asia almost 20 times or more and became good "friends" with many Asian leaders.

Let us be very clear about one thing first, the only people who can claim Australia as their own are the natives who have lived here for more than 40,000 years according to historical records. No no one else can make this claim, so anyone asking others to go home can first think of going back to England!!! It is China & India who buy the minerals & keep the mining boom going here & will continue to do so as the fastest growing economies for many decades to come. Even a perception in Asia that Australia might be unwelcoming will seriously affect the economy here & jobs. So everyone coming into this debate better keep these in mind.

What I find interesting is that every immigrant india I have worked with so far has been very polite & non confrontaional but what annoys me is when I ask their opinion to their children growing up & meeting a partner, all have said they will only accept an indian as a suitable partner to their children. Well this tells me they are the racist & should leave our country now!
We should only accept open minded immigrants! But a tricky one to filter.

Meenakshi..Australia belongs to Australians, black or white.
It seems strange that with all the Chinese students coming here there is no trouble,no complaints from them. They have never rioted in our streets, or burned our flag. They are quiet courteous studious and harm no one.You people come here and want to bung on the Raj and expect the red carpet treatment. This is not india sonny jim and if you don't like it don't go to Darwin...GO HOME !!!!!

If Australia start taking these people on board, they will do the same as they have done in England South Africa Fiji New Zealand Canada USA Malasia. They are arrogant bad tempered and nasty, and race phobic, and they love to play the race card.Australia must start selective immigration, and leave these trouble makers where they are.

Hello
Who ever wrote this message is not aware that countries like Australia need skilled people and India has plenty of skilled people and infact with the current skill shortage here no one can fill the gap except the chinese and Indians. Most businesses around the world have realised that growth engines of the world is India or China and most countries have realised it so dont't blame Indians for sending there students in search of better pastures blame yourself for not giving then a secured environment. There is no race which is superior or inferior it is the attitude. Australia does not belong to anybody infact the Aborigines are the first race and all the white race were migrants so let us be more broadminded and learn to accept anybody who has abilities instead of discriminating on the basis of Race.

BEIJING, June 9 (Xinhua)
Editor: Mu Xuequan

Chinalco was once called a "white knight" by a grateful Rio when the Chinese national aluminium manufacturer offered a 19.5 billion dollar investment to the debt-ridden mining concern amid the economic slump.

But Chinalco was quickly dumped when the mining market picked up. The perfidy of Rio, the world's third largest mining company, seems somewhere between short-sightedness and possible political prejudice.

There is an old Chinese saying: "A gentlemen's agreement is beyond the letter." Honesty is the blood of business behavior.

When Rio was trapped in its 38 billion dollar debt earlier this year, it was Chinalco that lent a helping hand by offering an investment to halve the company's debt.
Last December, after BHP Billiton dropped a takeover of Rio, the company's share price hit bottom at 32 U.S. dollars on the Australian stock market. However, the price soon doubled, partly due to the world's commodities markets' recovery and partly due to Chinalco's announcement of an alliance with Rio.

Yet quite unexpectedly, Rio quickly announced a breakup once the market recovered and the share price went up -- an act of "kicking down the ladder."

China's fast economic development has brought up the need for commodities such as iron ore, which has greatly benefited Australia and Rio, the main iron ore producer.

The union of a mining producer and a mining importer would pave the way for smooth trade. To break up with a potentially strong strategic partner such as Chinalco is a big loss for Rio from a long-term perspective.

Chinese enterprises recently have been actively investing in Australia -- a normal market behavior. However, some Australian politicians and media have been wantonly shouting the so-called "China threat" and putting pressure on the government to refrain from cooperating with China.

This kind of prejudice will not only stall the pace of economic coop ...

The Chinese are screaming 'bloody murder' because not only did Chinalco lose out on its Rio bid, China's largest foreign investment, but now Rio is getting into bed with BHP on iron ore. As the largest buyer of iron ore in the world, Rio and BHP have outraged their biggest customer in China's state-owned steel mills.

As for Rio, their capital raising will only cover their huge debt maturities until 2010. Beyond then their fate remains unknown.

One huge 'vulture fund'. That's how many pundits are starting to view China as they clamber to acquire key assets around the world. China may argue that their aspirations are no different to Ja pan in the 1980s - but Ja pan is a democracy. We can expect more severe tensions, rising protectionism and burgeoning trade wars around the world as the bear market unfolds.

KUALA LUMPUR, June 16 (Bernama) -- Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak says he wants to "walk faster and further" in developing Malaysia's bilateral relations with China.

He said Beijing ranked very high in terms of Kuala Lumpur's foreign policy consideration and his recent visit, the first outside Asean after taking over the Prime Minister's post, underscored the strategic importance of China to Malaysia.

Najib said China had developed by leaps and bounds and its transformation in a short span of time was truly remarkable.

Najib said China could also look into using Malaysia as a production base or even as a marketing outlet as Malaysia possessed its own advantages.

In the context of China-Asean, Najib said that greater trade and more free flow of services and goods would create more wealth which would benefit Asean which has a market of some 570 million people as well as China.

Free trade pact with China could boost economy by $146bn
Alex Wilson | May 20, 2009
Dow Jones

A BILATERAL free trade agreement with China would deliver the Australian economy a boost of $146 billion in real GDP terms, the Australian China Business Council said today.

A report prepared for the council by the Centre for International Economics found that trade liberalisation between the two nations would deliver a consistent increase in consumption of 0.7 per cent, topping at 1 per cent growth within two years of implementation of an FTA.

Article from: The Australian

LEADING trade economists yesterday said the NSW government's plan to prefer Australian-made goods amounted to a suicide attack on the nation's biggest source of imports, China.

An associated move, also set for today's NSW budget, favouring local products by broadening exemptions from free trade agreements, could trigger disputes with the US, New Zealand and Thailand. Premier Nathan Rees insisted yesterday the decision to prefer Australian companies bidding for $4 billion of government contracts was aimed at protecting local jobs not banning Chinese goods. And state Treasurer Eric Roozendaal claimed NSW was still working within the rules of Australia's FTAs with overseas partners.

While the federal government said it opposed such protectionism, unions welcomed the NSW measures, highlighting a growing split within the labour movement.

Article from: The Australian

KEVIN Rudd's expertise on China is a myth, says opposition foreign affairs spokeswoman Julie Bishop.

In a speech at the weekend to an Australia-China business forum in Brisbane, she said: "This myth is based on his being, 20 years ago, a mid-level diplomat who speaks Mandarin."

Since becoming Prime Minister, she said, "his forays into foreign policy have raised questions about his skills at diplomacy, and in particular his claimed expertise in regard to China".

Ms Bishop spoke critically of Mr Rudd's reluctance to sit next to former ambassador to Australia Fu Ying in a TV studio in London, and of the "secrecy" surrounding the visit of China's propaganda chief Li Changchun to Canberra.

"It's hard to know whether Mr Rudd was embarrassed or overawed. Either way, it sends an awkward message. We need to be open and honest with each other. Mutual respect is the key."

The recent defence white paper, she said, contained "the highly contentious assumptions that on the one hand China is the saviour of the Australian economy, and on the other it is a threat to Australia's defence".

"This has caused enormous confusion in Beijing. The notion that we are building up our military to meet a conventional military threat from China -- I find completely misplaced."

Beijing fires up at anti-China 'prejudice'
Michael Sainsbury and Matt Chambers | June 11, 2009
Article from: The Australian

CHINA has turned its guns on Australia's political class, claiming "prejudice" against Chinese companies and raising the possibility of stalled investment between the two countries as the anger over Rio Tinto's rejection of Chinalco continues to build.

After initially attacking Rio over its decision to abandon the $US19.5billion ($24bn) alliance with state-owned Chinalco in favour of an iron ore joint venture with BHP Billiton, anger within the media and government is now being directed at Australian parties that talked up the so-called "China threat".

"Rio Tinto's backdown shows short-sightedness, prejudice" was the headline of a strong English editorial run by China's state-owned Xinhua news agency yesterday, which warned that the decision may stall economic ties with Australia.

Mr Crean said stalled talks between Australia and China about a free trade agreement weren't connected in any way with Rio's proposed deal with Chinalco.

"The re-opening of the FTA with China is fundamentally now in China's hands at the political level," he said.

"I don't think there's any point at this stage in continuing negotiations at the official level, because they've run to a standstill...and need the political will injected," he said.

After reading on the paper about the protest, i couldn't help but to think back many years back when Pauline Hanson created a horrible stir towards Asian that affected the percentage of overseas student setting into Australia for their education. Although, the current situation is not as bad as the previous one, but yet again another racism which target Asian people, what a letdown. Although, in Australia racism is not much worst than in UK, but, still is a social probelm to Australia. Overseas students are contributring to the Australian government, WE PAY ALMOST DOULBE OF THE FEES as compared to an Australian, yet, cases of student being robbed, assault, etc. NSW government should do something about having hostel for student , especially in sydney where all uni in the city does not even have a hostel within the campus premises, and not to mentioned no concession. What the heck is the NSW council doing, paying so much fees and yet not providing the most basic.

While, i never encountered anything bad, just nearly got robbed sometime back and being verbally abused by some ignorance and naive white juvernile..

We need to get away from categorising everything into racism, sexism or any other bloody ism. This is all very black & white with no grey areas, if you attack someone it is against the law, if you sexually abuse someone it is against the law, the police should be given the powers needed to uphold the law & protect us law abiding citizens.
