Backlash in India gives Rudd food for thought
Matt Wade Herald Correspondent in New Delhi
July 29, 2009
THE Prime Minister, Kevin Rudd, has been lambasted on one of Indiaâs most popular television channels amid new reports about violence against Indians in Australia and corruption in the international education market.
The news channel Times Now broadcast a program on Monday night about the treatment of Indian students in Australia called fifYes, itâs Racism and followed it up with a special feature titled Take This, Mr Rudd.
The channel was critical of Mr Rudd for telling Indian channels that India had made a contribution to Australian culture with its food.
The channelâs editor-in chief, Arnab Goswami, accused him of trivialising the issue of attacks on Indians in Australia. ââLet it be known that Australian Prime Minister Kevin Rudd should do something a bit more serious than give interviews to Indian channels talking about how much he likes Indian food â thatâs not the point.ââ |

Australian college dupes Indian students pursuing aviation course
PTI 28 July 2009,Times of India
MELBOURNE: Fate of several Indian students enrolled in a Sydney-based aviation college have been left in limbo after their dreams of acquiring
commercial pilot license remained unfulfilled even after paying thousands of dollars.
In a latest scam which came to light after ABC TV channel programme 'Four Corners' exposed migration and education agents duping Indian students, Aerospace Aviation college that provides commercial pilot training, it was alleged, exploited international students besides ill treating Indian students.
Another former student Scott Alex said he was disturbed by the way the college was treating Indian students.
"It was definitely derogatory the way they spoke to them, the way they treated them," he said.
When asked if he could cite some example, he said "instructors hating flying with curry eating Indian stinking yellow so on, and management, I know of a case where the operations manager actually pushed around a student who was complaining."
The programme interviewed the mother of a student who alleged that after paying the entire fee of 43,000 Australian dollars the college stopped imparting training and her son had to return back with an unfulfilled dream.
However, students allege no concrete action has been taken against the college till now. |

Indian student market collapsing
Luke Slattery and Andrew Trounson | July 30, 2009
Article from: The Australian
THE Indian student market is showing early signs of collapse, with the recruitment body IDP Education Australia reporting an 80 per cent fall in appointments by students at its 14 Indian offices.
A severe fall in applications from Indian students for training diplomas and certificates would lead to widespread closures in the vocational sector of the type seen in Sydney and Melbourne over the past fortnight.
The Indian market is the sector's biggest growth area but is under threat amid the fall-out from a spate of assaults on Indian students and revelations that students are being exploited by unscrupulous private colleges and fraudulent agents.
At the same time, tightened immigration rules threaten to undermine Indian demand for the permanent residency-driven vocational sector. |

The ringleader in the fatal bashing of a university researcher walked away laughing after the "curry bashing" attack, a Melbourne court has heard.
The Victorian Supreme Court heard 21-year-old John Caratozzolo, of Melton South, led a gang of six other men to fatally assault lone pedestrian Dr Cao Zhongjun, 41, in Footscray.
The group swarmed on the academic, assaulted him and Caratozzolo landed a final vicious kick to his head before walking away laughing, Justice David Harper said.
"That kick was about as hard as you could manage. Your foot itself was injured."
The court heard that after leaving Dr Cao dying on the footpath, Caratozzolo led his mates on a second brutal attack on an Indian man on the same night.
Justice Harper said there was an element of racism in both attacks.
He said the attack on Dr Cao was terrifying, cowardly, planned and unprovoked.
The court heard Caratozzolo had talked with his mates about going "curry bashing" on the night of the assaults.
Justice Harper said Caratozzolo not only murdered Dr Cao but ruined the lives of his wife of almost 20 years and 16-year-old daughter. |

A MAN who kicked a gentle university researcher to death for fun while out "curry bashing" to get a new mobile phone has been jailed.
Ringleader John Caratozzolo laughed after inflicting a vicious kick to the head of his prone and dying victim, Dr Zhongjun Cao.
Dr Cao, 41, was set upon and killed by a gang of seven youths as he walked home from Victoria University in Footscray in January last year.
Supreme Court Justice David Harper said Caratozzolo, 20, suggested to his mates that they go "curry bashing" - meaning targeting and robbing Indians - because he needed a new mobile phone.
But when they saw Dr Cao walking alone the group attacked him without warning, assaulting him "for pleasure" without even asking for his phone.
One of the group dropped Dr Cao on his head during the attack and as he lay badly injured.
Caratozzolo launched a kick at his head as a parting gesture.
After the fatal bashing the group went on to attack another man, an Indian student. |

Article from: The Australian
Students arrived at Sterling's Sydney CBD campus yesterday morning to find they had been locked out and left with an uncertain future, despite government assurances that they would be allocated places with other education providers.
The closure follows a string of private college collapses over the past year, which has highlighted dubious business practices across Australia's lucrative overseas student industry.
Gaurav Hemant Garg, 29, who was studying a Master of Science, said he was angry at the school's management and the government. "The people who run this place should be jailed," Mr Garg said. "They've cheated us. And the Australian government has been asleep. They make a lot of money out of international students. But they don't care what happens to us."
Many students are believed to have paid Sterling College tens of thousands of dollars in tuition fees in advance. |

I have been working overseas around the world and spent my time in Europe, US, India, China, Singapore and Malaysia. I would have to say that these stays opened up my eyes.
Before going overseas, during my uni days i used to have a thing for international students. But now i kind of respect them. I strongly believe all this racism is due to us australians being not well traveled. We have this image of us being the "upper" class of the world. but if you have been to places like Beijing or Singapore, you would be able to understand me when i say that australia is way behind development when compared to them. From my understanding, the people we interact with here "the migrants" are infact the real upper class of their country who are pretty much really cashed up to even come to here for education or for work. You can see the asians kids in sports cars, old asians couples owning shops... they are the people who buys cars full in cash and houses with 50% deposits. I am pretty sure they are well respected back in their country. I think the behavior that the migrants are showing are the typical "rich man" attitude which would be present in a rich australian. In general, i think there are always nice people and nasty people around. We tend to only look at the bad side of things, without migrants the community would be totally changed financially and we might go bust...
so... welcome the migrants as they make our dollar strong and allow us to go for cheap holidays, cheaper import cars... |

The administrators of the Sydney campus of Sterling College say a significant number of Indian students will be affected by its closure.
The company has been placed in voluntary administration overnight because of its dire financial position.
Sterling College operates several sites in Sydney's CBD, offering courses in English, financial services and hospitality and has over 500 enrolled students.
Quentin Olde from administrators Taylor Woodings says students face the loss of most of their tuition fees, which they paid in advance.
This morning students gathered at the college's main CBD building, many of them said they were extremely worried about their future.
"We are panicking, there is no information from the college regarding what's going to happen," one student said.
A group of female students said that they had already completed one year of their studies.
"It' spoiled our future," one of them told the ABC.
Staff are being told that they will get help to apply for a basic redundancy payment from the Federal Government. |

| Every breed of humans have their social classes in the past example my Anglo ancestors have slaves at the bottom of the class and than they have peasants thats were farmers than they have land lords that were land owners and than they have blue blood aristocrates and than they had they royal family. Not so much different with some other breeds like the Chinese that have peasants, land lords and officials and ruling class or some religous class like infidels and fidels. As society modernize such traditional class system is replaced with other systems like education levels whether you are a Dr or a Mr or marital status a Mrs or a Miss. Hopefull I will be Mrs Jing soon hehe. Anyway just a few examples. Indians living in australia will no douth integrate and they will be toucable by the locals esp the fairer sex. |

| It is sad what some of you poster speak about Indians. My experience is that most Indians are nice descent people. They are actually Caucasians by species like us. They just have dark skin but if you bleach the skin white and put a few of blonde bits on they look just like your brother. Some North Indians you would mistaken for being a Eastern Europeans. Historically the Indians were also a great help to the British during the second world war particularly the ones that wear the turbans. They are the Sikhs. The help the British during the colonial times as policemen and soldiers because of their loyalty and honesty. The only people that we should not welcome in this country are terrorists and they should be send back because they are a treat to our way of life, The other Indians are just noce folks that will integrate in no time. |

Maybe if a few persons stopped treating Chinese people like they are stupid and gave them a little more respect, business relations would flow more smoothly.
Theres also a huge amount of minerals in Africa and Russia just waiting to be bought. They are not desperate for Australian materials.

| Regardless of relaxation of visa laws immigrants will come to this country as it offers them freedom from oppression and horrible living conditions, be it malnutrition, disease corrupt governments, etc.... The fact is all countries have a degree of racism, and australia has racism also, are we the 3rd most racist nation? I doubt it very much. The problem here is the focus on racism seems to be pointed at caucasians as they are the easiest targets, the fact is there are racists among all colours, and creeds. To deny this is complete and utter ignorance plus inherently racist in itself. I wish some people on here would stop painting all people with the same brush. Generalizations are not only morally wrong but damaging to all that it effects. Time for everyone to get over this topic and move on. |

Sumduude...
You aint ethnic Australian for sure(stop calling ur self that) ...Dont try to act like one..You aint aboriginal..You aint white-english australian either.
U must be from Pakistan or Bangladesh..
Any ways what you said about India in your last post is absolutely wrong...Firstly the misunderstood Caste system in India is not about Race, Secondly there are people of all castes in all parts of India, Thirdly India, China or any other African countries u named has neither proclaimed to be a a non-racist country, nor have they asked people from other countries to come and settle down in their country.
If Australia hadnot relaxed Visa rules(for our own benefit), many immigrants wouldnt even think about coming to Australia. |

| Yes, racism exists everywhere but the difference is that the only people who think Australia is Not racist are the Australians themselves, anyone else who lives here and comes from another country knows full well just how extremely racist Australia is. People from Europe ask me why Australians are so nasty to their English migrants when they are the basis of their (otherwise humane) society. |

Anyone that visits practically any other nation abroad will find rampant racism. I don't know who said Australia is the 3rd most racist country.
Look at the conflicts in Sudan, Rwanda, the former Yugoslavia, Chechnya, Israel, Lebanon, Saudi Arabia, China or the sectarian violence in Iraq. These are where racism is rampant, culturally acceptable and often leads to significant violence usually to the more moderate ethnicity.
India has a deeply ingrained caste system of which some regions are only just emerging from in recent years, barely decades.
Anyone that genuinely believes that Australia is the racist hot pot of the world is not only sheltered & incredibly ignorant, but perpetuating this damaging and subversive myth. |

the problem is not with indian students but with poor standards of journalistic reporting, sensationalist media attitudes and the callous exploitation of social generalisations for a story regardless of the impact socially, culturally, politically or internationally.
Lets take a closer look. "Australians are bashing indian students in racist hate attacks".
Actually it was ethic Australians. All Australians and our philosophic, multicultural views are being exploited here on the world stage f.
According to reports, it was attacks by a group of ethnic Australians. Which ethnic Australians. Doesn't matter - ultimately we are all ethnic Australians. It is really the correct term.
Thus it is more accurate to report ethnic Australians but less sensational and/or controversial. The branding of Australians as fundamentally racist is only supported by this viewpoint and this affects our image domestically and abroad.
But reporting this only brands ethnic Australians for these "racist" attacks.
As very few ethnic Australians are racist or even violent, it would be more precise to say "a small group of ethic Australians".
Given the attacks happened at night near train stations in and around a set of suburbs in apparently random attacks, perhaps it should read...
"One or possibly more groups of ethnic Australians are targeting train stations for what appears to be violent random attacks".
Using racism is a great way of selling magazines and but paints Australians as a whole as wholesale racists, which in my experience is not at all true. Australia is multi-ethnic, and actively embraces multicultural viewpoints socially. |
