| i don't think Indians are a threat to Australian jobs, as Australians have had world class education sytem since they where in kinder, unlike the foreigners. Saying that guys from overseas would steal Australian jobs sounds like they are more competitive than the locals, i definitely don't agree with Alan on that matter. |

this racist pidgeon holing of australia is a lot
of rot.
i wonder what predujices the 300000 immigrants
coming to this country a year hold in their
own countries?
what would be the reaction of the people in a
middle sized indian city if an avalanche of white
australians suddenly appeared and started taking
local jobs?
if you are someone not from australia, wanting to
get something from australia, the racism card
is the best way to go. it can raise people
attention and make local people feel their
concerns are illegitimate. |

AUSTRALIA'S foreign investment watchdog has sent a blunt signal to Beijing that state-owned Chinese companies trying to acquire bigger stakes in Australian mining assets will face further knockbacks.
Many Chinese executives and some officials have bristled at what they see as Australian discrimination against Chinese investments.
Yesterday a key figure in forging relations in the 1980s, former prime minister Bob Hawke, said it would be foolish to deny the relationship was strained. ''It remains my judgment that no relationship is more important for the future wellbeing of the people of this country than the relationship with China,'' Mr Hawke said.
''It behoves all of us, on the level of government and business and private citizens, to do all that we can in our various ways to try and ensure that we restore that relationship to the optimal level that it had for so many years.'' |

PREMIER John Brumby has opened his mission to save Victoria's biggest export industry with a straight bat.
After addressing university students at Delhi's Raj-era St Stephen's College yesterday, he grabbed a cricket bat and took strike on the front lawn of the campus to face a few deliveries from the principal, Reverend Dr Valson Thampu.
Education is Victoria's biggest export, earning the state almost $5 billion last year, and India is the biggest single market for that sector. Almost 50,000 Indian students enrolled in the state. |

Griffith University human resources masters student Adel Kassem, 25, of Lebanon, said there was no longer overcrowding in the 12-bedroom home.
Eight people - including an older Asian woman and a child - were present at the property.
The property's agent - Queensland Property Investment Solutions - said that once the lease breach had been discovered earlier this year, it had been assiduous in working with council to enforce the six-person condition of the lease.
Greens senator Sarah Hanson-Young - who is conducting an inquiry into Australia's treatment of overseas students - said there was a lack of clarity as to where the duty of care lay with international students.
"I've heard stories of young people who have come to Australia to study and are paying top dollar for their course and for the first few weeks they are sleeping in the corridors or the libraries of their universities," she said. |

A COUNCIL raid on a south Brisbane student house has found 37 people living there. The raid follows a Brisbane City Council (BCC) sitting last week, where changes to the House Code were adopted to cut the number of unrelated people permitted in one dwelling from six to five.
Readers’ comments:
Um, doesnt this just say somehting about the housing shortage and crazy cost of living, people are desperately trying to find places to live. Sorry but councils should butt out unless they are going to start releasing more land or allowing more building applications. Ive lived in places like this where overcrawding is an issue and its a sure hellova better option than the streets. My old place had 4 bedrooms awith 3 people in each, it was all i could afford being a student, and no Im not an international student, Im an Australian.
Posted by: Andy of Brisbane
Question? Why are there 37 students living in one dwelling? Answer? There is a dire shortgage of accommodation in SEQ. Also, time to stop the greedy universities who get $30,000 from an Australian but $60,000 from an overseas student for the exact same course.
Posted by: Kevin of Macgregor
The council spends most of its time blocking development applications for more accommodation near universities, only provides uni bus routes to certain suburbs, then tries to crack down on students living in large households. Where is everyone supposed to live?
Posted by: Tim of Brisbane
And where are the students supposed to go? They can't rent at St Lucia at $250 for a room. If the council cared about students and the money they bring, it would build proper student accommodation.
Posted by: p davis
Why has the Council gone from 6 to 5? We have a 6 bedder with 6 students, and we need that 6th student to make it work financially. The house is immaculate, fully furnished, all new whitegoods, and the 6 we have love it and don't want to move. How does 5 improve ... |

He said that there were lots of guys and they told the victims to go back to India.
Sukhdip Singh, his brother Gurdeep Singh and uncle Mukhtair Singh were targeted by the group. Sukhdip reportedly had his nose and jaw broken, and is now unable to eat any solid food. |

Three Indians attacked by 70 locals in Australia
Times of India
15 September 2009
"At around 11pm my brother-in-law Sukhdip was playing pool along with few family members when they were attacked by around 70 locals who were attending a party," the victim's relative Onkar Singh said.
"They were quitely playing and were trying to avoid trouble even after these locals were trying to provoke them by passing comments," he said.
The group started telling them to go back to their country. "When they reached the car park to leave the place a huge crowd attacked them and started bashing. The attackers were in their teens and around twenties," he said.
Onkar claimed police have informed him that six of the 70 attackers have been arrested.
The attacks come a month after Australian government assured external affairs minister S M Krishna, during his visit here, that Indian students will be protected. |

POLICE have denied they tried to cover up the bashing of four Indian men outside and Epping hotel, as the Premier said racially-motivated attacks were hurting Victoria.
The men, of Indian descent, were playing pool at the Legends Entertainment Bar in High St, Epping when a woman made a racist remark to them.
The men left the venue shortly afterwards and were followed into the carpark by another four men who were attending a birthday celebration inside.
The victims were then allegedly set upon and seriously assaulted by the second group of men.
About 15 men and women from the birthday celebrations gathered outside as police arrived at the scene and continued to make racist comments towards the victims.
Police witnessed one woman in the group throw a glass of water over a bystander.
But one of the alleged victims told ABC Radio more than 70 people could have been involved.
"It could be 70, it could be more than 70,'' he said. "They were coming from all sides. The carpark was crowded.''
He said the attackers didn't use weapons, but racism was behind the incident.
"Definitely racism," he said.
"We went outside, the crowd was there. They said: 'You Indians, just go back to your country'.
"Even the ladies, the whole crowd came outside.''
Acting Sen-Sgt Glenn Parker from Epping police said there was no cover-up, although he did admit the police media department would have known about the incident in the early hours of Sunday morning.
He had also spoken with the media department yesterday.
"Unfortunately, this type of incident occurs regularly. This is really treated no differently to any other event of this type.
Premier John Brumby , who is heading to India next week for a pre-arranged trade visit, said racial violence was hurting Australia’s image abroad.
The large group continued their racist remarks and threatening behaviour after the victims left the scene. |

"INDIAN student enrolments at Victoria's universities are expected to plunge by up to 50 per cent next year following a spate of violent attacks in Melbourne."
Is this because of the violence or because a government investigation has found that some of these courses are visa scams? |

THE Victorian Police are under pressure to explain why they failed to release details of an assault on four Indian men by an angry mob outside a nightspot in Melbourne's northern suburbs until four days after the attack.
Police yesterday confirmed four men had been arrested and interviewed in relation to assault and affray following the attack and released without charge. The statement was issued after the Times of India reported that members of Melbourne's Indian community had been “brutally bashed” by 70 locals.
At least two of the victims were treated in hospital for facial injuries. It is understood one of the men suffered a broken nose and jaw.
The newspaper this morning reports that the Indian government has asked its Melbourne consulate to investigate.
Gautam Gupta of the Federation of Indian Students of Australia accused the police of trying to cover up the attack.
“The whole system is try to keep these things under cover,” Mr Gupta told The Australian.
Police confirmed the group of Indians were subjected to racial abuse. |

INDIAN student enrolments at Victoria's universities are expected to plunge by up to 50 per cent next year following a spate of violent attacks in Melbourne.
The shortfall - comprising existing students who plan to abandon their courses here and hundreds more who intended to enrol but are now seeking positions at universities in other countries - will cost the Victorian economy tens of millions of dollars.
The international-student market is worth $15.5 billion a year, making it Australia's third-largest export industry behind coal and iron ore. Of the 465,000 foreign students, 90,000 are from India.
Federation of Indian Students of Australia president Amit Menghani said ''a lot of students are saying they are in fear and, once they are done with this semester, it's most likely they will be going back''.
Police, universities and the State Government had done little to improve the safety of Indian students since the attacks, Mr Menghani said. |

Howard ministers accuse UN observer Anaya of putting rights before living standards
"I get very annoyed when I hear people pontificating about human rights when today there will be children sitting out there in abject squalor with diseases they don't have to have, inadequate education, poor nutrition and poor access to health and we have some nicety about human rights legislation," Mr Brough said. |
