Thanks ecchi,
The reason I left that place is because they were going down. It is surprising that until the company was there I got good references from there. I got 6 jobs offers with references from there. Now since they are no more and sold to someone else I dont think it becomes the liability of the new company. |

rivacy acti s regarding the release of information, not obtaining it. You sign an authority so that each party they cotact is authorised to release information to the person making the enquiry. If any action can be taken, it would be against the company who gave the bad reference IF you did not authorise them to.

So there is no law to prevent an envious person from giving a n wrong reference. At least if there is something wrong I have the right to know. When such issues did not come up in the past. For example you cannot get a bad reference because you raised a complaint for sexual harassment or racial abuse or you got injured at work. I think if you have a perfect track record and did your job well no issues you are not left prone to not getting jobs because someone you dont know does not like you. This is the reason i reckon it is the normal procedure to ask before going ahead and you should know why.

I thought it is a privacy issue. Atleast this is what I read and sign when I go to recruitment agents. There must be law to prevent people from giving wrong references. The usually way is you consent with the person which references he wants to provide and you only provide references where people have agreed to do so. I am happy at my current place but am irritated that someone went behind my back. Not used to this practice

My ex work colleague was forcing me to apply for a position because he knew of my work skills, good behavior etc. We became really good mates and still keep in touch. I applied and without being called for any interview he called me back saying that some hr manager there went behind my back and contacted someone at my previous job and did not get a favorable reference. He mentioned the name of the company and asked me to delete it from my resume. I found it hard to believe that someone gave me a bad reference from there because I got so many job offers with references from that same place. I just feel violated that someone went behind my back and contacted someone I did not authorize. Is this legal? Can I do something about it?
