bank sa went to the wall & their banking licence was bought by st george. the sa government poured billions in to cover depositors. this is what federal government hopes will happen, hence no need for guarantees.

as for apra, well, where were they looking when HIH died.

No end to credit crisis in sight: IMF
Tuesday July 29, 2008, 8:47 am

The International Monetary Fund (ASX: IMF) says there is no end in sight to the credit crisis gripping world financial markets, predicting that banks are in for more pain as mortgage defaults soar and economies slow.

With revelations still fresh about the extent of exposure for Australian banks NAB and ANZ, the IMF has issued a particularly gloomy assessment of the US economy in its latest global financial stability report.

Jaime Caruana, head of the IMF's capital markets division, says global markets are not stable.

Two more US Banks gone overnight Friday/Saturday!

First site is Wall Street Journal Report.

Second site is the FDIC failed bank list, which is starting to move along.

http://www.fdic.gov/bank/individual/failed/banklis t.html

Close gaps, as usual.

Well, I can only say that it is a fortunate accident of nature, that it seems banks usually go belly up on a Friday, leaving the weekend for things to settle down.

Some banks, such as the St Gorge bank, (god bless "em!, do still offer a bank account with a passbook, instead of an ATM card.

Your solution doesn't work, credit cards are just numbers on plastic, which can be easily hacked into. My financial details were hacked into by a member of my own extended family, a person who had a respected position of authority, at the time.

There is a government guarantee for bank deposits under the old passbook account style.

Question government, Reserve Bank, etc should clearly answer is :

Whether this older regulatory guarantee extends to recently developed flexi card and internet accounts developed to reduce costs by using technology and to which many customers were pressured into transferring into by banks.

The government also pressured many old age pensioners into transferring to these, and numbers of them are very worried now....

just read this from Government Consultation on Financial System Guarantees
A Response on the Merit of a Deposit Insurance Scheme
3 September 2004 IBSA (International Banks and Securities Assoc): The Government and prudential authorities in Australia have made it clear on many occasions that there is no government guarantee for bank deposits under the current system of bank regulation. The evidence over the years is that market behaviour has been predicated on this understanding, which has promoted careful market scrutiny of banks.
this outfit is involved in regulation

but I must admit that I had thought they were guaranteed. Silly me.

With all the problems caused by sub-prime, how safe is my term deposit with the bank (one of the big four) in the case of a severe depression of the economy? I seem to remember a couple of banks such as Barings being toppled. Could it happen in Australia?
