When the Baby bonus came in, I really thought this is the first step to paid maternity leave, or a similar program from the government (one I would have supported even though our child rearing years are done for). It makes total sense to provide incentives for families to pop one or two out (coz it's that easy y'know). From memory I believe Labor were against the bonus because all the 16yo will go off and get knocked up for the cash. I think Today Tonight did their best to find such a 16 yo with no luck.
The other day Rudd made a comment that all money provided by the government to the people was deemed welfare and should be treated as such. They should have removed the scheme altogether or let it stand.
Sorry for the rant but: I can't help but think of the Rudd household with their $150m+ income and decide that they represent 'common Australia'. K-Rudd's wife made a healthy living off the policies of the previous Government including requiring her employees to make Work Choice agreements, and consequently made over $150m last year alone. Sure, she had to sell out her Australian companies, but Our First Lady has more than her fair share of international holdings. I wonder if this why foreign investors only get taxed at 7% while those inside the country attempting to invest in Australia get slugged 30%?
Why couldn't we vote her in instead, obviously a better choice out of the two.

The govt's decision to pay the baby bonus by fortnightly instalments demolishes parents' ability to use the money to pay for the upfront costs needed to care for the babyand the fortnightly amount will be so easily eroded by normal living costs- The instalment program works out to be $192.30 per fortnight - This is is to little to late to be effective
