Mina, when the retirement age was set at 65 all those years ago, most people were lucky to survive past 70. So the government was only budgeting to pay each person a pension for five years or so.
These days, people routinely live into their 80's, 90's and beyond. Even with the retirement age at 67, we're expecting to work (and pay taxes) for 40 years, then be supported by those taxes for another 30 years. That clearly doesn't add up. |

| Kevin Rudd can't please everyone but it really concerns me that the retirement age has now been increased to 67year from 65years and will increase every 2years. Does he really expect us to be working, this long. I guess what they hope for is for the ageing population to die well and truly before they start to dish out their "owed" retirement fund, when its okay for the politicians to walk away with a good golden retirement package of $100k on average. Has someone factored in their retirement rather than target ordinary Australians, who are the real foundation of having built this country. |
