What about Billy Elliot? Wasnt that a movie about a kid who wanted to dance even though his father was embarressed about it?
What about Dirty Dancing? Wasnt that about a girl who wanted to dance even though her father didnt want her to be with that Patrick Swayze guy? |

mister rekshun,
I was implying Happy Feet was controversial because of the discussion we have had regarding it on this message board, not because it itself is controversial
And yes I did notice the non-conformist subtext. The story of an out cast who wants to do dance, even though its looked down on, and eventually gets everyone busting out the moves. No hang on, that was Footloose with Kevin Bacon!. I guess that makes Footloose a classic hero tale as well
If you think that the fact that these types of animated films are popular with film makers for other reasons then the fact their cheaper and make millions in merchandise sales, then id be interested to know what that would be.
By the way, dont you think that the main character penguin looks eerily like Elijah Wood? |

Sorry becca, I dont mind the odd kids film but I definelty think Babe is slightly over rated. Have you seen the "controversial" Happy Feet yet?

Nope Trevor, I haven't seen Happy Feet yet ... will no doubt wait until it's released for sale on DVD |

I didn't say it was controversial... but it is subversive.
It has quite a clear anti-religion and non-conformist sub text that you might not have noticed because all you saw were dancing penguins.
But that's cool... taste is a purely subjective thing, and some people are just too cool for films about dancing penguins or talking pigs.
Personally I don't see how people can be enamoured by Shrek, which is nothing but a string of pop-culture gags that were out of date 6 months after the film was released. |

| Oh Trevor, you and I always have the same taste in movies, but this is the only time I've disagreed ... I loved the movie Babe ... in fact, I only watched it with my kids last Sunday afternoon ... I think it's a beautiful little story, and I loved that duck! |

Oh and mister rekshun, Babe is a load of crap as well. And yes I have seen it. The touching tale of a pig that wants to be sheepdog. Inspiring. Skippy the kangaroo wanted to be Magnum PI as well, I guess that makes Skippy a well structured classic hero story to.
End rant. |

"Trev, have you actually seen the film? It is leagues better than tripe like Open season,Hoodwinked, Barnyard etc.."
mister rekshun
No I always make comments about films I havent seen :)
I havent seen Open Season or Barnyard but I have seen Happy Feet. And its crap. And I dont know what makes you think I hadnt seen the film. Because its a kids film you just thought Id comment on it to get a rise, without having actually seen it? I have a 5 year old, and in all honesty if he it wasnt for him I wouldnt have bothered.
Again, visually its no more impressive then alot of stuff we have seen over the last few years. Im sorry, I havent seen anything in this film that I havent seen before and the story, classic hero story or not, is no deeper or better structured then alot of these type of aniamated films.
Have you seen Hoodwinked,Barnyard or Flushed Away? Of course you have, because you wouldnt dismiss films you havent even seen now would you? |

>>What a load of rubbish. Happy Feet is anymore impressive visually then alot of stuff we have seen over the last few years. And whats so impressive about the story? A penguin who cant sing, which makes him an outcast, but can dance like a champion. Brilliant. Sounds like the story of Kevin Federline got a little computer animated treatment.
Its about time people woke up and realized this kind of shite is pumped out by the studios because they make a fortune in dvd and merchandise sales. Happy Feet, Flushed away, Barnyard, Hoodwinked, Open season, ching ching ching
Would you like fries with that?>>
Trev, have you actually seen the film? It is leagues better than tripe like Open Season , Hoodwinked, Barnyard etc.
The singing and dancing stuff takes up about the first half hour of the film then it takes a dramatic tonal shift as the penguin goes on his quest.
It is quite a deep allegorical tale that subverts religion and conformity. It has a mythic structure that adopts the classic hero's journey and goes to places that I haven't seen any animated film go.
And it is visually stunning - the antarctic landscapes are beautifully composed and rendered. My wife turned to me at one point and asked if the landscapes were real or animated.
There is plenty of CGI animated tripe out there.... but there are also those that stand head and shoulders above the crowd (those being just about any Pixar film).
Look, I'm a writer myself, and I get annoyed when people dismiss films they haven't even seen. Part of the problem is that it is marketed as a singng, dancing penguin film for kids - that's only a small part of it.
Plus... it's George Miller. The guy did Mad Max 1 & 2, as well as the Babe films (which were also classic stories that transcend demographics).
End rant. |

| To measure the worst movie, I used my expectations against what I was subjected to, and for me 'King Kong' takes the cake. How Peter Jackson could flop so horribly after 'Lord of the Rings' is staggering. Perhaps he overindulged himself in 'KK'? |

*snort* DUDES, chill. I don't want to watch any of those types of films- Flushed Away, Open Season, whatever. Only animated film I liked is Shrek.
Who GIVES if some people don't want to watch the stupid thing? Are you making money from it? Um, no!
I bet there are a thousand films I consider to be fantastic that you wouldn't watch. And I think to call Happy Feet "epic" is a bit ridiculous. I know plenty of people who have seen it and all I've heard is that its "quite cute". |

Your loss. Happy Feet is a fantastic film - a visually stunning, charming, epic and subversive animated film.
George Miller is pretty much a cinematic genius, so his name alone makes it worth watching.
Whatever your preconceptions are, it is so much more than a cutesy film with dancing penguins. |
