Orphan...what a great movie. That was another person playing the role towards the end..wasn't it ?

Another one coming out soon if you like 'scary' is Shutter Island starring Leonardo Dicaprio, directed by Martin Scorsese.

If you google 'Shutter Island' you can see the clips.

I haven't seen the movie but I am interested in the comments. The shower scene in psycho terrified me as a kid, not because of any blood and guts, but the familiarity with an every day event that I took for granted, where my guard was down. The music, like in Jaws, also played a part.

Dracula was tame compared to some of the characters they have today for young kids to get a thrill from.

Sure, he sunk his fangs into people's necks and had a bit of a sip, but he didn't smash skulls or stab someone in a mad frenzy.

What makes it so shocking is that you watch a crime perpetrated by a kid. It is acting but they make it look like the kid did it, and when you see it up on screen, it is disturbing. Very disturbing.

That was it for me, 'Orphan' was not what I expected and my son has seen other movies with the same rating that were not as bad as that. This stuff is really scary, it is capable of giving me nightmares and I've had a few since last weekend. They involved an evil looking little girl with a steely gaze....

Yes, he's seen many films that many wouldn't think would be for a 12 year old, but he was able to walk away not feeling scared. Or at least he didn't admit it. He compares notes with his friends and they must think they're real macho.

I agree with your concern, and I told him it would be the last of such movies I would take him to. He saw the effect it had on me and he said he wouldn't ask.

At least if he needs to see them at home when they're televised or on DVD it may not seem as bad. It showed me the types of movies that are out there and it makes me uneasy.

You took a 12 year old to see that? I know it's MA here but it got an R rating in the states.

I finally gave in to my 12 year old son's requests to see a scary movie today. I thought that being in my 40's meant I would be able to handle anything on the screen, but I was sadly mistaken with "Orphan".

From the ads I recall seeing a poster of a scary looking little girl and I knew from her expression that she had to be related to Satan himself. Well, I wasn't wrong! Through some of the suspenseful bits, I kept saying somewhat audibly, "Evil little *** !" and had to keep my angry thoughts to myself. Then I had to remember that it's only a movie.

This movie had so many scary scenes that made me look away and it set the pace for the rest of my day. I went to the supermarket this evening and expected some evil looking little girl to steal my shopping or hack me to death at the car park. Thankfully it was an uneventful trip, but that movie really got to me.

At the end I missed one of the best parts because I had to run out of the cinema, as nature called, or rather screamed. I had to leave my poor, perplexed son to watch the scene and make of it what he would by himself. I had failed as a parent at that moment, running out when my son would have been scared out of his wits but his male bravado would never let him admit it, and he's not even a teenager yet.

I had to ask my boy to make this the last scary movie that he would ask me to take him to. If I was blessed with the need to fall asleep during the movie I would have come away unscathed. But tonight sleep will elude me. I will be expecting an evil little female with a steely gaze to come out from under my bed with a weapon. I better keep the light on tonight.
