Bit of trivia
One of the producers of Picnic At Hanging Rock and Gallipoli was Pat Lovell. She was Miss Pat of Mr Squiggle.
She wrote her biography a few years ago, thoroughly enjoyable read. |

America takes a hit from many critics but their command of screen language is second to none.
Even in a bad American film, they have structure down pat! Something sadly lacking in many recent Australian films.
BTW, Samantha Lang should never be allowed to make another film...
Ever! |

'Best ever" is Guiness Book of Records, I know. Read above you at the huge number of films, most of them more than respectable, firthermore. Does it not make you proud, proud in a way that learning of one's army's success at killing other people could never do?
This pride I feel is a lot deeper than the pride I feel for 'Gold Medals', etc. An artistic pursuit is a true measure of a country's stuffing, in my opinion.
Australia is very well supplied with brilliant film makers.
Potentially, I truly believe that Australia has the ability to equal France when it comes to genuinely worthy, adult-focussed cinema. Films such as these, all intended to be commercially viable, make me very proud. Most of them, I must say, entertain me very well, also!
Someone rejected 'Walkabout', and the grounds of rejection were valid. How about 'L'Idole' a French film, made in France in the French language, directed by Samantha Lang, an Australian? |

I find the whole "best ever" catagoty a little hard to quantify. It depends so much on genre, style, etc...
I agree The Tracker was outstanding; Gallipoli; Walkabout; Jedda; Death In Brunswick; Soft Fruit; Breaker Morant ... all brilliant.
Sentimentally, I give a tentative "favourite" nod to the cult classic "Dogs In Space"... far from a work of cinematic brilliance ... but it captures a time and scene that is relevant to me. Probably giving out too much personal info there...lol. |

I really liked The Tracker, and The Bank was good as well. I thought Little Fish was a little over rated. It was ok, but just a little dull.
For a comedy, you cant beat: You Cant Stop The Murders, which is a cult comedy about 2 cops in a country town. It's got Akmal Salhi (spelt wrong I know) in it, and it's hilarious. |

Bit of a stretch to call 'Walkabout' an Aussie film I reckon.
Anyway, some great Aussie flicks include...
Picnic at Hanging Rock (1975)
Don's Party (1976)
Mad Max (1979)
Breaker Morant (1980)
Gallipoli (1981)
Heatwave (1982)
Fringe Dwellers (1984)
Fran (1985)
Malcolm (1986)
The Year My Voice Broke (1987)
Evil Angels (1989)
Romper Stomper (1992)
Bad Boy Bubby (1993)
Blue Murder (1995)*
The Quiet Room (1996)
Dance Me to My Song (1998)
Beneath Clouds (2001)
The Finished People (2003)
*Blue Murder might be a mini-series but it's bloody brilliant! |

Yes, it was.
It was, as well, a supremely amateurish piece of cinematic junk. The screenplay was reminiscent of 'Hey, Hey, it's Saturday', the acting [Caton excepted] was somewhat coy [See, ain't I funny!], the photography embarrasingly bad, and the music was an insult to the art.
That's the cinematic evaluation done. Yes, like you, I quite enjoyed it! |

There is no argument on that point, unless you contest the assertion that it is, in fact, an Australian film. I talk of Nicolas Roeg's magnificent "Walkabout", almost unanimously chosen by film critics as one of the very, very best films ever made.
The director/cinematographer, and two of the three young leading actors were English, that is true. [The 6 year-old boy was actually Roeg's son, Lucien - now a prominent film producer.]
Aboriginal actor, David Galpilil, was staggeringly brilliant!
If you haven't seen this magnificent film, do yourselves a favour! It's in most video shops these days in DVD. |
