Hmmm! That's a tough one! But, I'd have to say:

Muriel's Wedding and The Dish. Can't decide: they're both hilarious.

Romulus, my father, a terrific effort by Richard Roxburgh, so moving, and Eric Bana was just SO right for the part.
Picnic at Hanging rock
Priscilla Queen of the Desert
Rabbit Proof Fence
Shine - Geoffrey Rush at his best
Gallipoli -one of the finest ever made
Wolf Creek for sheer terror in the Aussie desert!

Re:Best Australian Movie Reply to this message
Best Aussie movies
Black Balloon ( brilliant, still showing at Dendy)
September ( another brilliant movie, can't believe it bumped at the box office)
Look Both Ways (after watching it at Dendy i bought the DVD. Great movie)
Last Train to Freo (what a film... brilliant acting)
Ten Canoes (All time best for me. Definitely 5 stars)
Lantana
The Castle (what a classic)
Rabbit Proof Fence(ditto)
Muriel's Wedding
Beneath the Clouds
Black and White ( great movie)
I love Aussie film - i have only live here for 10 years and appreciate Aussie humour and brilliance. Tis a shame the locals don't support their film industry. The local video stores have no place for aussie film...why is that? They have foreign film section, and hollywood. what about aussie film.

I'm grateful to everyone for putting up their favs. at least now i know what to look for when i go to the video store next.

Re:Best Australian Movie Reply to this message
Glad someone finally mentioned SHINE. Geoffrey Rush is brilliant.

Gotta buy a Chrissy present for my daughter's Canadian boyfriend - I think I'll pick Gallipoli (wouldn't you know it they can't play it in Canada because of the region difference).

Anyway my all time favourite Aussie flick: "Nickel Queen" (you haven't heard of it ... shame on you!!!) OK, I only picked it coz my home town gets a mention. As one critic said: "It's so bad it's wonderful"

Re:Best Australian Movie Reply to this message
"Walkabout" certainly qualifies as Best Australian Movie -- but only as an example of travesty of intent.

From it's opening scenes "Walkabout" literally "loses the plot" of the authors intent, throughout the movie corrupts a phsycological study into a continual landscape post-card and ends with credits insulting the primary lead actor (which reviewers perpetuate).

Based on the book by James Vance Marshall, "Walkabout" (originaly titled "The Children") was a timely indictment on cultural clashes of disparate civilisations thrown together with an inter-dependency developing. Marshall originaly wrote of two privileged Apartheid-inculcated South African children as sole suvivors of a trans Indian Ocean plane flight crashed in the bleak forbidding West Australian desert. Their rescue and survival is dependent on their chance discovery by a primitive Aboriginal undergoing a solitary rite-of-passage journey. With no common language, cultural misinterpretations occur that lead to the rescuing native's death having first ensured his extincting charge's futures.

In the movie the whole anti-Apartheid indictment is lost.

Starting with a murder/suicide attempt by a failed Sydney father, the abandoned children meet a travelling Aborigine and have a joyous, if mildly trialled, sojourn whilst returning to White community salvation.

For the all important pivotal role as the rescuing Aboriginal, David Gulpilil got paid a pittance relative to his co-stars. In the credits his name is mis-spelt as "Gumpilil" (not even "Galpilil"). Would mis-spelling "Pall Knewmann" or "Clint Eastwould" be an acceptable oversight? Ironically, the indifferent depersonalising of the mis-spelling supports Marshall's non-filmed un-stated inter-racial commentary.

The film's style, content and format needs to be considered in the context of the time of its production.
This film meets the formula of the time: imported stars, justified nudity, Australian flavour, familiar locals and locales.
