Re:Best Australian Movie Reply to this message
The film I mentioned earlier "Ten Canoes" certainly gives us many insights to Aboriginal culture and civilization. A topic that I find fascinating.

Added to that is the more modern telling of the history of the indigenous Australian is the film "Rabbit Proof Fence". An excellent picture of what happens when cultures collide. It is also a good example of the British system of colonization wherein the colonizers attempt to turn others into "Englishmen". Then turn around and refuse to give those people, natives as in the case of Australia or "stolen people in the case of the African black man in the United States as well as the Native American. These types of schools and institutions used to "Anglify" people of other races and cultures existed in all of the former British colonies and the vestiges of these institutions are still strong. This is not to say that the systems of colonizations of Spain, Portugal or France are any better, Just different.

Third film: "The Proposition". This certainly gives us a realistic picture of Australian history in the late 19th century nd gives some idea about the roots of both rural "white Australia and the roots of Australian style violence. This is also a great film. I have nothing but praise for the Australian film industry.

Re:Best Australian Movie Reply to this message
"Ten Canoes" is certainly not harrowing but it is a real look at Australian indigenous culture that hasn't been seen like this. It is really from the Aborigine's point of view. The director started out as Rolf de Heer, who is well know in this genre but de Heer is very smart. As the story gets involved he realizes that he really doesn't know as much as he thought about the indigos culture. He makes Aboriginal actor Peter Djigirr co-director and then the film really takes off. It is actually a story within a story and once the narration of Davis Guilpilil is added it becomes a story with a story within a story. It is in the manner of many native tales. To me it became a doorway to understanding more about "dream-time" in particular and about native culture and customs. This is one time that a picture is truly with more than a thousand words. You have to see it to get the idea.

I also just saw "Rabbit Proof Fence". A stellar piece of film work by Noyce and a welcome departure from his Hollywood action film pap.

Re:Best Australian Movie Reply to this message
Alvin Purple , (Alvin Purple Rides Again) , Dons Party , The Adventures of Barry Mackenzie, --bring back the 70's--look at the casting -Graeme Blundell,Barry Humphries as a young Edna Everage , Graham Kennedy -some of those actors and writers like Beresford and Williamson went onto great things and are still responsible for todays Aussie Movies and comic culture--however things went down hill with Fatty Finn !!!

3 hours of the most beautiful cinema in history.

Saw it on the weekend with some overseas friends. The comment of one summed it all up "Didn't know this was a comedy"

Cringed big time.
